whar are all these in there /var/lib? there is a sub called rpm with some rpms there reason i ask i put /var in its own partition and space is limited i know i can move it to / but i want to see if i can avoid that

Simple network file shring

Hi all I am running 8.2. I have two machines connected to a Vigor 2200E router attached to ntl cable modem. I would like to share my home directory and other files with the second machine so I can log in on that machine. I have tried all sorts of configurations of NIS and NFS with yast2 but I cannot get it to work. Should I be using these programmes to do what I want or is there a simpler way ? I don't have much knowlrdge of networking and the more I read the more confused I get. Can someone help with the simplest way to achieve what I want please ? The NICs are both set up using DHCP and the network itself works fine. TIA Mike

Notebook powermanagement

I installed Suse Personal onto my IBM A21m notebook. No APM In the kernel. The Fcn keys for APM functions (screen, sleep, hibernate) have all gone "dark". What are my options at this point? I am suprised noe has sent anything to the list about this one. It is from slashdot.org and links to a NYTIMES article (that you have to register before you can read it, which I hate doing but it was worth it for this one). domxml_xslt_stylesheet() missing

Does anyone know why the PHP function domxml_xslt_stylesheet() is not found under SuSE 8.2 Pro? phpinfo shows that xml and xslt are enabled but where are the functions located - nothing viewable in YaST installer. I'm trying to run I know very little about PHP and I'm trying to run Komplete Lite because the midgard package from 8.2 won't run either. Otherwise PHP runs other packages OK. Geoff

RE: java plugins issue?

I came across a web page at smartmoney.com where clicking on the the link I've got message about missing plugins. Playing around a bit and installing j2re1.4.1_03 plugins I got the url to display the form content but using mozilla form pull down menu didn't work. Netscape 7.02 was better, menu worked but I still couldn't see anything I typed in to the form. Am I missing something or it's just lousy plugins & browser combination? Konqueror was not any better. I had recently installed the latest alsa stuff, all of it. I followed the readme and used checkinstall. I noticed that I had problems initially because there's a script in the alsa-driver to install the sound device -- ./snd-devices. Once I did this a query of my packages showed the latest was installed (previous queries showed the SuSE default cvs packages). I am having a hell of a time getting some programs to find the sound cards or they report there's no sound device. With the audio/midi players and progs this is not a problem per se - they generate sound (and most others - like games, etc). However, dvd players, read xine, won't use the sound. I have all the libs installed (at least I think so) and liba52 (ac3) is in and recognizes. So, how do I get the /proc/asound stuff to register correctly again. I understand them to be symlinks to /dev/snd stuff? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Curtis.

[solved] : tweaking/building NVIDIA from tar + Flightgear inputs

Thanks for the inputs and help offered, to all you good men. Solved my problem, although I could not believe my eyes. 1. My Via motherboard would run only on 1x AGP speed and would simply hang on other speeds [like 2x and 4x]. It has SDRAM and the board wouldn't allow even testing for 2/4x by the X server/nvidia module. So it works at 238 fps [glx gears] 2. I did "sh installer.run --extract-only" to get the tar file and then did a repeated "make install" for the tweaks that I made to os-registry.c. Dell Intel 810 video setup

I'm trying to setup Suse 8.1 on a Dell Dimension L800CXE with an Intel 810 video chip set. I'm having problems. Has anyone setup Suse on this system? I noticed during installation of Suse that the Intel chip set support was "experimental". In Sax, when Finalizing, I get an XServer error. Any help would be appreciated. Matt
