Hi all, My SuSE 8.1 connected to our windows network and working as a Samba server, I try many times to get access to our MS PROXY or MS ISA to serve the internet, but I can't. It gives me this message: Unknown host Anyone know how can I solve this problem? Thanks

Hi All, I am a novice to Linux...so, bears with me please. Just purchase da copy Suse 8.2 Pro this weekend. Installed on my laptop - Dell Inspiron 7500. After three installation attempts, finally, installation was successful. This is a dual-boot with window 2000. I try to get the lap/linux to work with our server. Network card configuration went fine. Two questions: 1. I can connect to the internet; however, I notice that the transfer rate is very slow, compare to the window counter part -- it's like 50% of the window throughput. Since it is using exactly the same hardware and all, why is the transfer rate so slow (eg. 50 Kb/sec vs. 150Kb/sec)? Did I forget to configure something? Or Do I need to configure anything else? 2. I could not get things to print to the printer which is attached to the server. Via Window, I set the printer via Network Neiborhood. Is there a similar thing in Suse 8.2 Pro.? Thanks, LN. Léna R. I don't know what you mean with 'low-end desktops'. Which model? We are using HP XW4000 Intel based (P4) workstations. They work perfectly with linux. In fact, HP has certified this machines for SuSE. This machines are former Compaq machines (Compaq Evo W4000). Compact Flash

I am unable to mount my compact flash card with a pcmcia compact flash reader on SuSE 8.2. I googled on the topic, and found very little. The only suggestion that I found was to change from "kernel" to "externel" pcmcia, but this only locks up my system (as do many things apparently). However, I don't know what irq it is requesting, and I don't know how to change it either. I see there is a section in the /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia file (PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS) where I can list free irqs. Honestly, I don't know how to obtail a list of free irqs. When I used to work with Windows I seem to remember that 9 was typically open, and 3 and 4 are typically used for hard drives. SCO Hellwig Caldera Linux

Curtis, I hope your wrong in thinking that Cristoph Hellwig could be a source of contamination. He is core kernel developer and IIRC in Linus's inner circle of trusted developers. He and Alan Cox did the GFS to OpenGFS evaluation and setup 2 years ago. I think he consulted with IBM on the JFS port and he is currently employed by SGI supporting XFS. On the XFS port, I think it was Cristoph that did the major job of making XFS acceptable to Linus, and thus got it into the vanilla 2.5.x kernel. If all of his contributions had to backed out of the Linux kernel, I suspect it would be a major blow. Greg -- Greg Freemyer

Here is the real gotcha: when starting Flightgear, the command line has to be fgfs --fg-root=/usr/local/lib/FlightGear-0.9.2 otherwise it will not start. new disk installation

Hello guys I have an old system running SuSE 6.1 and i want to add a new hard disk (40GB) and transfer everything from the old disk to the new one with the same distribution How can i do this? Probably i will run fdisk /dev/my2nddisk but after that what? I mean how i can transfer all the settings from the old disk to the new one without loosing any data? Thanks a lot

Messed up somewhere...help

Well, I have some time to work on this one as the system is still useable....but... This is Suse 8.1 with the default installation. A few months ago, I finally got around to defining an IP printer. Actually it is an IBM 4019e that is connected to an OS/2 box with the lpdeamon running. And it worked ok. I had a problem that it would print a garbage page prior to the actual printout. Somewhat like a LPR header. It had 4 lines of output with a line feed, but not a carriage return. But that isn't my current major problem. I tried to fix this problem. Eventually, when going though Control Center for printers, I got "No printing system installed. Choose the spooler to install and configure". I didn't really pay much attention to this message for several iterations of "trying". This is part of my current systems state. When I finally noticed (i.e. read) the message, I tried to install "LPRng". It just comes back to the same "No printing system installed." message. Same thing when selecting "CUPS full server installation". So, I decided to go back to the installation process and reinstall CUPS. Now, I get to the "big" current problem: When I go to "Install or remove software", it pops up with a major dependency conflict. I tried to cut and paste it here, but I couldn't "select", much less "copy". So, here is some things, I typed here: aaa_base 2002.11.5-1 conflict Conflicts with: Realplayer requires /etc/mailcap compat 2002.8.15-20 conflict Confllicts with: java2-jre requires libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 glibc 2.2.5-87 conflict required by: cups-libs requires ld.so.1 ghostscript-x11 requires ls.so.1 + 227 more.... conflicts with: dos2unix requires ld-linux.so.2 inetd requires ld-linux.so.2 + 82 more..... sh-utils 2.0-135 conflict conflicts with: sax2 requires /usr/bin/chroot My assumption is that somehow, a so.2 set of things got installed with the so.1 stuff. Now, I haven't applied any maintenance and the only things that have updated my system were from the installation CDs that came with the box. So, I'm at a loss on why there was a conflict to begin with. The conflict resolution wants to remove all 342 conflicting packages. That kind of sounds like my whole system. So, I will not be doing this until I have a good backup. Unfortunally, the last full backup was 3 months ago. At least that was a valid, operating, system. From a current backup, I should be able to restore all my user files. But hopefully, there is a way around this without a "full reinstall" or "full restore". Eventually, this type of option will not be available. But, perhaps others have hit this problem before and have some guideance. Thanks Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting

V-Webmail issues..

Hello all: I've been running a PHP webmail program on my system for a good length of time and suddenly after doing an online update to my 8.1 system the webmail program no longer works. It appears to authenticate the user fine ( I am using Cyrus IMAP and SASL2 DB ). However, after the login process it just redirects back to the login screen. It seems like perhaps session management has been messed up or something. Anybody have any clues or tips to track the problem down? Thanks, Jim

printing latex file with kile

Dear my friends... I am absolutely new in LaTex. I am trying kile to make me easier learning LaTex. When I first installed Kile, I was trying to use pdfLatex to produce portable PDF files, and to use GhostScript to view them, mostly since these were the default settings tied to the function keys. I could not get either to work, but I downloaded the Linux PDF Viewer from Adobe, and set up the "Quick Build" on the "F1" key to go through the steps of Latex -> dvips -> ps2pdf -> launch Adobe, and everything has been working great for me ever since. I'm using Kile to manage and write "Z" specifications and getting excellent results. Now I wish I could find a good package for describing and adding "Petri Net" specification diagrams to my LaTeX documents. Under the tools menu in Kile you will find other options though depending on what you have installed like pdflatex which will create a .pdf file or a postscript option which is there as well. you can print a dvi file, obviously a .pdf file or a .ps script file and you won't see the latex source. there are also utilities like "dvips" which generate postscript files out of .dvi files and ps2pdf which well, it should be obvious what that does. wayne

I don't know with 6.1, but with newer SuSE versions it is easy. Install new drive as IDE 2 Master (/dev/hdc) Boot single user mode dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc bs=8k Assuming your old disk is smaller that 40GB, use 'fdisk /dev/hdc' to create a new partition or 2 at the end of the disk. Format, mount and populate the partitions if you are going to move anything to them. poweroff Physically remove the old drive and make the new drive IDE 1 Master Boot as normal. Update your /etc/fstab to use the new partitions. Suse 8.2: remote session of kde using exeed will not work automatic

Hello, Since last week after my upgrade (read a clean install) from Suse 8.0 to 8.2 i'm fighting a very strange problem. I want to start kde on top of my windows XP and use Exceed 7.0.0.0 to do it. My exceed command string is : export DISPLAY=192.74.233.15:0.0 ; startkde I create an exceed client shortcut to automate kde logon and use this shortcut to start kde. The only thing I see is the kde splash screen, and after all the initialization the desktop appears for a few seconds. Hereafter kde disappears. Enabling exceed's debug logging shows the following: export DISPLAY=192.74.233.15:0.0 ; startkde kbuildsycoca running... DCOP Cleaning up dead connections. Server has no DPMS extension >> running as realtime process now (priority 50) mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding KInternet session mode disabled. KInternet should be started from startkde. ERROR: KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error! I never have the same problem with suse 8.0 (and exceed 7.0.0.0). And strange enough when I start a manual telnet session and run my exceed command string manually everything seems to work fine. (in my telnet session I found also the same 'ERROR: KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error!' error. Maybe exceed triggers this ? I have used linux software from the Suse 8.2 CD or installed by suse's online update.(because of my problem) Kde 3.1.1 XFree86-4.3.0-15 kdebase3-3.1.1-63 kdebase3-SuSE-8.2-78 Can someone please help me out ? On the internet I've found info about the DCOP error but nothing seems to help me. Fvwm seems to work. I do not found a way to start gnome remotely because startx doesn't run from a remote telnet session. [SLE] [suse-laptop] apa1480_cb pcmcia cardbus scsi missing in SuSE Linux 8.2?

Hello, I am missing the pcmcia / cardbus driver for the Adaptec APA-1480 SCSI adapter in SuSE Linux 8.2 (pro). It has been there since a long time up to- and including SuSE Linux 8.1 (pro). The older pcmcia driver (aha152x_cs) for the non-cardbus APA-1460 SCSI adapter still being there. Is there any problem with this card? Any hints or using some other sources?
