Some installers will already do this, such as the Yast2 installer. It goes into it's database and check dependencies, an d attempts to install the proper libraries. Another option would be for the installer to search the internet, eh? I have seen a few M$ installers do that. The differences in libraries that I have seen, are primarily with older apps. webdav in konqueror

resolving PERL dependency

Hi, I've installed the perl-ldap-0.251-71 package from suse.com, and it is reporting dependencies on perl-URI and perl-XML-parser. These two packages are not in SuSE's download Update/Patches/Bugfixes page (at least for 8.1, my version). I've tried looking for them at perl.com and perl.org, but did not find anything. If the package would include the necessary libraries to install and run, rather than being dependentant on what the distro may already come with, should resolve this issue. For the most part just about every package I have come across I could compile and execute on Mandrake, SuSE, Red Hat, Debian, and *BSD. There is only the matter of porting the libraries. Polish Linux companies have given notice to SCO Group (OT)

Two Polish Linux based companies: CYBER Service and IT ZONE have given notice to SCO Group to desist from unfair competitive practices after an interview with Greg Boguchwalski from SCO Group was published in the Polish edition of Computerworld magazine. CEOs of both companies, Cezar Cichocki and Sergiusz Pawlowicz have warned the SCO Group that it will be sued in case of further unfair competitive practices. Strange Apache error

As of June 9 my apache has started to behave strange. I first noticed it when I was trying to access it locally. Apache was dead. tried to restart it and then checked status - running. I tried to connect once again and failed. Checked status again - dead. I can restart apache but as soon as anyone tries to access it it dies. The only error I found in the errorlog, besides astale pid, was: [warn] Apache does not support line-end comments. Consider using quotes around argument: "# crossover" I've tried to find this offending argument in various configuratin files, in /etc/httpd /etc/sysconfig... AFAIK I've made no changes to any configs before June 9 Does anyone have any idea what is going on. -- War does not determine who is right, war determine who is left. Hosts file "corrected" by something

Hi! When I add lines like the following to my hosts file on the machine puddleglum: 198.162.0.201 fred.puddleglum.mylocaldomain.com fred.puddleglum 198.162.0.201 lili.puddleglum.mylocaldomain.com lili.puddleglum 198.162.0.201 lulu.puddleglum.mylocaldomain.com lulu.puddleglum something (!?!) comes along behind me and "corrects" these lines (it leaves the other lines alone) to simply: 198.162.0.201 puddleglum.mylocaldomain.com puddleglum (The reason I am putting these lines in my hosts file is to be able to access virtual hosts on my Apache web server on puddleglum from puddleglum.) BTW I'm using SuSE 8.2. Ideas? TIA! Mike Green

NVIDIA 4643 driver - degraded 3D video perf

Recently installed the latest video driver file from NVIDIA, "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run" and now see that my frame rates on glxgears has dropped to something like 600 FPS. Also, when the cursor is moved the gears actually stop! Has anyone elce seen this? I had reasonable performance with the 8.2 drivers with my GeForce2 MX prior to installing this release and am wondering if there is a fix? Go back to the current drivers for 8.2? Cheers KN

Hi I have a USB LITEONE External CD-RW, which works great on Win.... I tryed once to use it on SuSE 7.3. It seems the system recognized the USB device, but not as a CD device.... I need to plug this CD-RW to a machine running SuSE 8.1. 1. What must be done so the OS recognizes it as a CD unit? 2. what program can I use to burn CD on this External CD-RW? weird clock problem

Clock on my Suse 8.0 machine starts to run really slowly after some days/weeks/months of normal functioning. One second on my computer lasts for 5-10 real seconds and the only cure for this is rebooting. Anyone else experiencing this weird behaviour? robert

Pinnacle miro DC30+ Video capture/playback

First time I've posted here so fingers crossed I have done it correctly. I have a Miro DC30+ video capture/playback pci card which according to the SuSE hardware compatability list is supported. http://hardwaredb.suse.de/showProduct.php?LANG=en_UK&searchtype=simple&prod… My problem/s : I can't seem to be able to use it as a capture card. Where am I going wrong? My system is an AMD 1800xp. Default SuSE v8.2 install. I've tried all the apps I can find on the DVD's - kwintv, motv, xawtv, Mainactor and broacast2000 etc to see if I can capture but to no avail. Most of the errors I've noted while starting the apps in a shell are: E.g. :~>xawtv This is xawtv-3.85, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-4GB-athlon) can't open /dev/video0: No such device v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device v4l: open /dev/video0: No such device no video grabber device available From that I've deduced the card is either not assigned or setup properly but how do I go about doing so? There were no signs of it being recognised in any of the installations of suse. I have noticed its listed in hardware info under PCI as ZR36057PQC Video cutting chipset. This doesn't quite ring true as I was under the impression it was a ZR36067 based chip but i digress. Other things I've tried are, I've loaded in the zoran-driver.rpm to no avail. Tried installing a "TV card" using expert settings and selecting the "Kernel module" -> ZR36067 but then getting total lost in all the other settings available. You help will be appreciated Barry

Susewatcher config--revisited

Hello again! Ok, all, back to my original question! Who knows where SuSEwatcher gets it settings that it keeps going back to dial-up when I have a direct connection with a cable modem. Who knows about susewatcher as I can't seem to find a manual or other documentation around for it? I can change the config file in $HOME, but shutting down susewatcher, restarting kde or just doing a check for updates, reverts it all back to dial-up connection (Offline). Is that just telling me that the dial-up is offline or that it needs to use that for automatic checking? I have never gotten a notice of it checking for updates via the icon or anything else. I always have to manually do the check, so what's up? Thoughts, suggestions, solutions? Susewatcher settings

Greetings all, I have a question about the susewatcher program. It seems that this program is designed to check on security updates, etc. autmatically and alert you with a change in the icon if there are new updates available, right? That is what I thought as well, but mine does not seem to be doing this automatically. I think I have determined the reason why, but don't have a clue on how to change it. As I have both cable service and a modem connected, it seems to be getting confused as to what it is to use to do these checks. Right now it is indicating the modem, I believe. If you click on the icon, the YOU Status window opens and mine presently shows: Network: Dial-up connection (Offline) I think it should be showing Network: Direct Connection, though for the cable connection? If that is the case, how does one go about changing it to reflect that? I went thru those pages, and found the answer..... this ActionTEC MD 560RD modem isn't supported according to the Linmodem web site, or at least there's no driver support for it in Linux. It appears that the device is valid and registered on the USB bus. gtkam is able to detect this camera.... Looking for USB device (vendor 0x40a, product 0x100)... found. I'm not clear on what the error means by the statement that I should make sure no other program is using the device.

Hello all: This is very off-topic but thought one of you might have some ideas for me. I've been using a webmail tool called "V-Webmail" but its apparently become broken after some of the latest updates to Apache and PHP4. So I decided to use Squirrelmail. Problem is that I need to get a readable file from the address book file that V-Webmail creates. the file looks like its a serialized file containing a data structure written out to disk. Does anybody have any idea how one would parse out or read the this type of file? I can pick out certain things such as names and email addresses, but the file has weird tag names and other such stuff that I don't understand. I know, it's a stretch.. I probably didn't say enough for anybody to know what I'm talking about.. Take care, Jim

I am venturing for the first time into collecting email from my linux box. Accordingly, I've got postfix and procmail installed. Now, I've looked at the YaST MTA tool, and that lets me redirect email from ISPs to specific local users. However, I need to filter the emails from one ISP to several local users. There is also the "aliases" tool. Do I understand correctly that this is what I need to use for this? The man page isn't especially informative to me, I'm afraid. Would I be better configuring postfix and procmail manually than using YaST? Perhaps collect all email from my 2 ISP accounts, redirect to procmail to filter the emails to the several local users? Also, I assume that it's possible to filter one email to several local users? There are some email lists that all users read, but to which we have a single subscription (no point downloading the same msgs many times!).
