So it seems that we need to purchase a router. Btw, what is the difference between "router" and "broadband router"? Our high quality standard forces us to keep to the versions originally published with a product to maintain the overall system in a consistent state with regards to cross-dependent packages (think of a linux system like a building, built with packages like bricks one on top of another). Even though these packages have been built for the specific SuSE Linux version, there is no warranty that these packages seamlessly interoperate with the rest of the system. The packages have been made with "best effort" and _should_ work as described in the README files contained in the respective directories. We make no claim about their fitness for a specific purpose, so you might as well experience that the package you have chosen does not work properly on your system. In addition to this, there is no warranty about the fitness of the packages in security matters: There are no updates for these packages unless the maintainer decides to refresh the trees with new builds. To make it short: If you wish to use a newer version of a package and if you insist on having properly working updates at hand if there is a security update, then please use a newer SuSE Linux version. If you feel a little bit adventurous, then these packages will suit your needs. date change and system crash

Hi, By two times (begining of April and end of May), I found a machine crashed in the 60 seconds following an unexpected system date change. Both machines ar PC running SuSE 7.2 Pro with vtun (vtun.sourceforge.net), but that's probably the only things they share with each other. One is a P4 with much memory which runs heavy java stuff while the other is an old PII that just filters traffic with iptables. And in both cases, the system log shows that the system date changed backwards: first case: lun. avr. 07 08:28:09 CEST 2003 -> jeu. avr. 03 16:29:31 CEST 2003 second case: May 27 13:47:16 -> Mar 18 11:22:00 less than 1 minute later, the machine hangs. Nothing to do but power it off and on again. Any idea, anybody ? Multiplatform script interpreter/language

Hi all, I want to learn a new scripting language and now considering witch one. I have following requirements on it: - one which is ported on more platforms - Linux, Sun Solaris, Windows - easy to create a simple GUI - easy to parse a text files - easy to work with directories and files - easy to work with XML - even possible to make OS native API calls - ... - easy to learn ! I know that awk exist, something about Perl and Tcl. Perl and Tcl are ported on both Linux and W2K. Is Java Script M$ only? Do you know some URL where these languages are compared? Can't add ftp installation source in yast2

hi there, I just installed 8.1 from the cd set and now I wanted to add the suse ftp server (or one of its mirrors) as an installation source in yast2. but no matter which server I try, adding the ftp installation source always returns the error: "Unable to create installation source from url: ftp:/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse... Details: ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media)" I already deleted the local installation source (cd), so now there are no installation sources in the list. what can I do? any help would be very much appreciated. I searched the suse support db and mailing lists already, but all technotes where about not finding the dvd-rom as installation source or some other problem. Martin. my fonts broke

I used KDE Control Centre's Font Installer to add the MS Tahoma font. Sadly, it crashed and restarted KDE - thereafter one particular font caused an error whenever I tried to use the installer, so I removed it. Everything is back to normal now, including the new Tahoma font, except when using a Konsole. Previously I had it set to use a "Custom" setting, but that's now displaying characters d o u b l e s p a c e d which isn't very helpful. I'm pretty sure the font I deleted was not the one I was using. If I try to change the Konsole font I get a choice of 3 rough looking fonts, none of which are any use. Can somebody tell me how to convince the Konsole to let me choose a proper font?? Please??! Cheers! sjb

I did a 'man portmap' and a 'man rpc', and they both might as well have been written in latin. But I think I picked up on enough to guess that if I'm not running any kind of server for the internet (a server being something someone from 'outside' my own home can use?), then I really don't need portmap...is this correct? When I tried 'rpcinfo -p' , I got back portmap on 111, twice, so I guess it's the only thing 'open'? Next quicky question...when I did a nanoprobe test of all services ports <http://nanoprobe.grc.com/>, I have port 113 'closed' instead of 'stealth'. Okay, this one I'll need to ask the tech guys at my ISP if I can actually stealth this, am I correct? Since it's the ident port? All other ports were 'stealth', but I also failed the ping test (icmp echo). Is there a way to make it so that my machine doesn't answer 'pings'? This is just a plain ol' everyday machine, not running anything special, I use it for mail, surfin', and not a whole lot else. Steve talked about how ZoneAlarm "adaptively stealths" port 113, is there some way to get SuSEFirewall2 to do this also? Thanks for the help as always.
