I do not know for sure, but there is no such file on the DVD version (unlike the DVD versions for 7.3 and 7.2 I have) so there is a real good chance that the file is not needed for anything.

SuSE recommends that you upgrade to 8.0 first. If you don't have a copy of it, then that makes matter more complicated. A clean install is always best, but that can be a pain. It all comes down to how much you customized your install of 7.3. If you only use it for desktop stuff, you might get away with just keeping your /home and /root and replacing everything else, but if your on a network and your box is setup as a file/print or web server then you definatly can't get away with dumping your configuration files. If you could provide more details I'd be more than happy to offer additional suggestions. Things that would be helpful to know: How much Linux experience do you have? How much time do you want to spend on this upgrade? How many people are effected by this machine and how important is it? ... I have a machine at home that has been upgraded from 7.2 -> 7.3 -> 8.0 -> 8.1, and it appears to be working fine. On my personal machine, I decided to do a fresh install at version 8.0, since there was a big change in the /etc layout (e.g. the 'plumbing' changes mentioned earlier). Oh, make sure that you do a FULL SYSTEM BACKUP, before you start the upgrade. This has saved by butt on a number of occasions... believe it or not, most installers just can't cope once you run out of disk space...lol, I'd call myself an experienced computer user, but I've fallen into this several times... Hi, I hope this is the correct list - if not, please tell me which one is. SuSE 8.1 with all updated .rpms applied postfix is the e-mail client but is essentially unused because I do everything with mozilla. *the setup* eth0 points to the internal network (fixed IP addresses) eth1 points to the net, the IP address is dynamic. (I also have a second profile where the net is DSL, that goes via eth1 as well and always works) SuSEFirewall2 is active and blocks all services from outside while letting everything inside through (Samba has 'bind interfaces only' set, nfs is inactive, very few services are installed anyway) *the problem* When I go online, things normally work for a few (maybe 5) minutes but then I start getting the following firewall message: Feb 1 18:32:56 newred kernel: SuSE-FW-ILLEGAL-TARGET IN=eth1 OUT= MAC=01:00:5e:00:00:01:00:50:57:00:64:45:08:00 SRC=10.20.0.1 DST=224.0.0.1 LEN=32 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=8723 OPT (00000000) PROTO=2 I can then (I believe there is a link here, although it could be a coincidence) no longer access the net, or the e-mail server, or the dns servers or anything else. De-activating the firewall does *not* help. Recently postfix (the updated .rpm) also went haywire so I set the mail server to localhost and that seems to have taken it out of the equation. *history* This originally worked for a couple of weeks (cable is new here). I installed the updated dhcp-client-3.0.1 version no problem I noticed that dhcp-base-3.0.1 had a new version and installed that. the problems seem to have started then. I have just reverted both dhcp-base and dhcp-client, maybe that will help. They *are* security fixes though. *The workaround* I kill the dhcpcd daemon (also the new version, but installed earlier) and then do a 'dhclient -1 eth1'. This fixes the problem, although it did not always help until I reset the postfix mail server to localhost. Does anyone have a clue what could be going on here? Upgrading Suse (Linux in general)

Hello people, I have just downloaded another 1000 Mails and love reading you here! In things of upgrading Suse I have read about updating for instance from 7.3 to 8.1 and some questions arise in my head. As far as I have learned the largest difference between 7.3 and 8.1 is the new kernel, and therefore now my question: Couldnt I simply get me the new sources for 8.1's kernel and compile it on my 7.3 system? Or what more changes would I have to do since I would like to keep my now installed software? Firewall log files

I managed to get broadband working with the BT Voyager modem, and activated the firewall through the menu system. Can someone please tell me where the log files are kept? Thank you, John

The kernel source should be in /usr/src/linux, and the configuration file should be in /usr/src/linux/.config (it may not exist until you run 'make config') You may want to you SuSE's config file to get started, just run: # zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/src/linux/.config' As far as applying source patches to the kernel and/or upgrading to 2.5 or 2.6 (once it's out)...this could be a pretty big task. While, you certainly can run any kernel that you like, that doesn't mean that you should. You will most likely have to upgrade a number of user-space tools to get a non-2.4.x kernel working. Remember that 2.5.x is a development branch. It might be fun to play with, but is defiantly not recommend for daily use. I'm not sure what you ultimately trying to accomplish here, but unless you are a developer, really like tinkering, or just like fixing stuff that you break, you may want to stay away from development kernels and wait for SuSE (or some other distro company) to provide you with a solid 2.6 kernel. If you are simply trying to upgrade to one of SuSE's kernels, then you don't want the source at all. Hi Fergus, OK ... the KDE update was cool (thanks for that) and yes it looks really smart. A few things bomb out ... nothing major though. Not having so much success with the Kernel. I d/loaded the source RPM which was 2.4.19-115 (currently 2.4.19-74) and ran the program (RPM) which extracted the source (I also d/loaded a patch but I'm not sure what to do with what). I can't find a configure file so I'm a bit confused as to what to do now? It's quite possible I downloaded the wrong kernel (the one I got was source and even the smaller patch one was source). Another question ... I was reading in Linux User that Kernel 2.6 is about to come out and I was wondering, once I figure how to update a kernel, if I am able to use non-SuSE kernels as I presume there must be a 2.5.xx kernel available? Hello world! I have recently copied the whole FTP tree for a NFS install of 8.1. But the hidden file is missing. And i cant find it on the servers i copied from. Whats the name/location/contents of it? worth upgrading to KDE 3.1?

Hey all, im running SuSe Linux 8.1 professional, i was wondering, what is your opinion on 3.1? should i upgrade? why or why not? just want your opinions since i actually trust what you all think (you guys actuallys use it) :) -- Kill the lights, let the candles burn behind the pumpkins’ mischievous grins, And let the skeletons dance. For one thing is certain, The Misfits have returned And once again everyday is Halloween.
