Anyone succeeded in FTP update from 8.0 to 8.1?

The 8.1 rpm's showed up in all those mirror sites as well as ftp.suse.com. Is it just me who cannot find the update option when boot.iso is used? If you succeeded in updating SuSE 8.0 to 8.1 please holler us. Thanks. Hugh

Upgrading SuSE Linux from 7.3/8.0 to 8.1 over NFS

Dear friends, I am trying to upgrade my network from SuSE Linux 7.3 and 8.0 to SuSE Linux 8.1 simultenously with NFS. I found the documentation on SuSE Homepage (www.suse.com) and try to implement this upgrading strategy with single directory. I've done this steps : 1. Making directory for source : "mkdir /usr/AUTO cd /usr/AUTO mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom cd /media/cdrom " 2. I copied all the cd1, cd2, cd3 and cd4 to "/usr/AUTO" with this command : " cp -av /media/cdrom . " 3. I mounted the "/usr/AUTO" as NFS Server with yast2. But than I have ridiculous problem on client side. I can not mount it even I configured the NFS client with YaST2. Taskbar clock problem

Im running SuSe version 8.0 personal Im having a extremme problem with the taskbar clock I set it exactly to present time ... Next day its fast. I reset it.. in morning and by evening its as much as 10 minutes fast again. Has anyone else had this problem??

Odd problem . . .

Here is one situation, I ping a host say "ping useast.battle.net" and leave it running, I find that it stops showing updates like its getting a lot of packet loss. Well it hangs there for while, and continues, well this happens a few times and I stop it, and see the report . . . --- useast.battle.net ping statistics --- 95 packets transmitted, 95 received, 0% loss, time 4679943ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 54.671/82.689/426.173/51.731 ms Ok, So that really confuses me. I say it hang one for a long time. Also, I seam to be having some issues. Like running gtk-gnutella, where it wont stay connected or connect to others. (the reason for my running ping/traceroute). Now I am behind a firewall, and my other pcs are fine. SuSE 8.0 Hardware AMD 850 mhz, 256 ram

Crippled encryption easy to fix?

My supplier just apologized for messing up my order, and assures me that my SuSE 8.1 Pro is *finally* in the mail. During our conversation, he confirmed that the Canadian regional distributor had gone bankrupt last year, and that nobody seems to be stepping in to replace them. Therefore, SuSE and other software is currently being brought in from the USA (not from Germany or other "foreign" source). However, this means that my new 8.1 will probably have the crippled "export" level encryption... even though the original from Germany probably contained full-strength crypto. My question to the list is: How pervasive is that crippling? Is it just in one or two packages, or is this a far-reaching limitation that reaches into all levels of the distro? I think of PGP/GPG, apache/openssl... but what else will either be missing entirely, or included with only low-strength, pre-broken crypto? Will it be automatically fixed the next time I run YOU, or will YOU leave all the crippled apps and modules crippled unless I know to name them for replacement? (In other words, does gwdg.de and SuSE undertake to enforce Amerika's [or anybody else's] laws onto third parties?) Thanks, /kevin

newbie disk upgrade question

I am running SuSE8.1 and WindowsME with GRUB on this machine, with a 10GB disk. That is not big enough, since I scan a lot of photographs, ending up with 54MB per photo. That is about 2GB for 37 exposures. I want to install a second hard disk as the IDE slave to the current master hard disk. How do I do that as far as the software installation goes? It would be OK if that new disk is FAT32 only, so both Windows and SuSE have access to it. Do I start up WindowsME through GRUB, and then format this new drive from Windows? When I startup SUSE8.1, will it recognize this drive? -- Frits Wüthrich

Cut & Paste program..

Hi all... As you all know my wife is learning Linux but due to problems with her hands she can not type very good. We were able to fix the keyboard slow enough so that she can now work with it. (Thanks!) Today I was teaching her how to cut and paste with a mouse between two ttys. BUT she can not handle a mouse (same reason as for the typing). Is there a program like gpm using only the keyboard?
