7.3 default kernel

This is probably a stupid question but its' bugging me. I have a standard 7.3 installation. /usr/src/linux is a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux-2.4.9, yet the running kernel, according to /var/log/boot.msg, is 2.4.10-GB The only subdirectories I have in /usr/src are "linux" (link to 2.4.9), linux-2.4.9 and linux-2.4.10SuSE I did elect to install the sources during installation ( as well as the "rest of the sources" as SuSE puts it). What is going on here? Thanks David

Checking ftp server SuSE 7.2

I have tried to ftp into my machine (using ftp localhost) but it always comes back with a connection refused. I checked for ftpd using rpm -qa | grep ftp and it says ftpd-0.3.2-51 is installed. Anybody know why I can't connect Phil

Check your /var/log/messages file when connecting, (tail -f /var/log/messages on another terminal, i.e. ALT-F2 or another xterminal in XWindows). there will probably be something in there. Also, although you have the package installed is the daemon (server) running? Access how? Using windows boxes on a network? (Use samba), Using FTP? (Install an FTP server, I think it's wu-ftp but I don't use it myself), Using a web browser? (Install Apache and create pages in the appropriate directory). Have a look at the /var/spool/fax/etc/hosts.hfaxd file. It contains entries for the people/hosts that are allowed to send faxes. It contains explanatory text and entries for the localhost at least. Yast1 hung ftp restart possible?

Is there a way to stop and restart Yast1 so that a hung ftp based install can be restarted without starting over? I had to spend a long time selecting packages and don't want to repeat that. I'd like to manipulate the system without rebooting by unix commands and by knowing where the yast1 current configuration files are. I would like to generally do something like this at the linuxrc root prompt: kill -HUP yast1 yast1 -configfile -mirrorservername -fileofselectedpackages Is this possible? Or is it possible to give Yast1 a signal to let me reconfigure the mirror used and then pick up where the ftp process hung? I am experienced with IRIX "Inst" and am looking for the equivalent type info. Thanks for the help, Dow

7.3 on Toshiba 5005-S504

Hello all - I am trying to install SuSE 7.3 on a Toshiba 5005-S504. The installation hangs, unless I do a manual install. It seems to halt at a message "searching infofile ...." or something like that. (I'm doing this from memory.) I finally managed to get through the entire installation process using the manual installation option. However, the system now hangs on the PCMCIA script and I have to shut down and restart the computer. I have booted into linux using the "linux single" command on the LILO prompt. At that point, if I stop PCMCIA and then attempt to restart it, I get a kernel panic message and the machine locks up again. I cannot figure out how to disable PCMCIA in the boot script. Booting up with linux single does not allow me to run YAST and the Linux partitions are mounted RO. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get me past this roadblock. Thanks, Harry

smartups log files

I have installed Smartups using the trust+ups425.My problem is my log files are having 3 lines added every 3-4 seconds. I am not using the system at the moment so I can't remember exactly what the text is but it is something along the lines of:- Sent xxx bytes to unit Got xxx bytes back from unit System update successful or something similiar. I realise I need the updates every so often but not every 3-4 seconds. I have changed the entry in the /etc/rc.config.d/smartups configuration file but it makes no difference. There must be another configuration file somewhere - anyone any ideas? TIA Andy
