I'm far from being a specialist in these matters, but I once wrote an interactive score editor in curses mode (using a special ASCII language of mine to represent the score, surely nothing very interesting nowadays :-). Without having looked at any similar tool, it seemed natural that I wanted to "hear" the score right in the editor, it was absolutely evident to me that it was something useful from the start. If in my great naivety, I thought doing it, I wonder why people who are really serious in the matter do not provide similar features. Let me chat about this a bit, it's fun. I made a few commands to play the current, or a few selected bars, right away, and also added a mode that was playing sounds one by one, while being entered (the hear catches most coding errors right away, it was useful). I had no sound card on the machine, so I just reprogrammed the pitch and duration of the console beep (BEL) before each note. Absolutely no sound quality, of course, but quite enough to avoid coding errors. For multi-voice rendering, I was time-sharing the console beep between the voices, giving arpeggios all along. Far from extra-ordinary, and getting on the nerves somewhat, but once again, quite effective at debugging a score efficiently. Only later, my few pre-testers convinced me to add MIDI file output, and I studied MIDI file format to make them happy. It took me only a few days overall, this was not that difficult to do. They also wanted sound support when audio devices were available, like on Sun on SGI stations, and this has been much more work for me to speedily generate the waves for all voices. I had special problems with frequency aliasing and annoying clicks, and had to learn how to handle incomplete cycles and non-rational frequencies, and all this, using extremely simple wave shapes. When I later found Timidity, which is extremely more powerful than what I ever did or dreamed of, I was completely stunned in admiration. Oh, and by the way, Timidity is on SuSE 6.4 as well, for my greatest pleasure. It also worked very nicely for me, after I merged in some previous configuration I had for an older Timidity. > Lilypond just helps you notate and create a midi file, right? Lilypond is aiming high quality score printing. Importing or exporting MIDI files is rather secondary in the project, even if both are possible. I only tried exportation, but even saying this is exaggeration, as MIDI exportation occurred automatically as a sub-product of the generated score. As I told in an earlier message, I tried Denemo which compiled and worked very quickly for me, no pain, no fuss. Denemo has an option to play the full score. It launches a subprocess for this, but yet, you do not leave the editor. [SLE] Upgrading from 6.2 full to 6.4 evaluation?

Hi folks, Sorry if this is a newbie or recurrent question, i'm new to the list. Anyway, here it goes: I have had a full 6-CDs SuSE 6.2 version running on my machine for quite a few months, and i think it's about time to upgrade. However, rather than purchasing a full 6.4 or 7.0 version, i would like to wait for 7.1 or something like that to come up because i'd like it to have a kernel 2.4.x, KDE 2.0 and that kind of stuff. Then i was thinking that, in the meantime, maybe i could upgrade to an evaluation 6.4 version in order to at least update the basic packages for security fixes and things like that. Would this work? I think so, but I was wondering if anyone could see any downside other than the obvious not having the non-in-evaluation packages updated. Also, could i use the 'Update from an older version' setup options considering that the old one is a full version and the new one is an evaluation one? Any feedback appreciated. [SLE] UMP (Netscape MIDI plugin) and SuSE 6.4

I use the UMP plugin with Netscape to play embeded MIDI files. This worked fine on SuSE 6.3 but when I upgraded to SuSE 6.4, UMP stopped working. The plugin is installed and enabled as can be seen by Netscape's "Help -> About Plugins". It's icon/logo shows up in web pages, its stop/pause/start buttons can be turned on and off, but there is no sound. Midi works in general since I can use KMidi to play Midi files. I don't think I broke any configuration files (i.e. timidity.cfg is the same and is in same path and same environment variable points to it.) I just noticed that package `howto', on SuSE 6.4, installs both: /usr/doc/howto/en/CVS-HOWTO.gz /usr/doc/howto/en/CVS-RCS-HOWTO.gz while the second is merely an obsolete version of the first. One merely looses bits of own time by reading the second, while s/he should only read the first instead. Hi, Today I upgraded to 2.2.16 all was running perfect.... but I get this message in my logs: VM : do_try_to_free_pages failed for kswapd VM : do_try_to_free_pages failed for kmail VM : do_try_to_free_pages failed for AnyOtherProgram After some of this logs I start getting other errors like SegFault doing a ps, X locks, when I rebooted the machine it get stuck sending the KILL signal I'm lost, never have this problem before.....any clue????? Absolutely, if you have compiled the kernel, make sure that you selected ram disk support. The kernel supports ram disks out of the box. Then you'll need to install the file system on it (I think the command is "mke2fs -vm0 /dev/ram xxxxx", the xxxxx designates the size of the ramdisk. Then all you need to do is create a mount point (mkdir rdsk - or wherever else you decide to mount it) then "mount /dev/ram /rdsk". You can verify that all is well with the "df" command. It was also said to be among the two fastest window managers, and I tried the other one, but was not at all attracted by the bunch of big icons, all over. One think I like from IceWM is that the screen is very clean, and fully dedicated to my own windows, no manager noise. I got the menu bar hidden at the top of the screen, I merely just push the cursor up for a fraction of a second, when I need to use the menu. I easily adjusted the menu hierarchy to represent my habits and tastes. There is a nice `icepref' tool to set one preferences, written in Python and using GTK, that gives me the right amount of capabilities. I do not need so much extra fuss anyway. Of course, I added `icepref' to my own menu! :-) I met a few tiny bugs in IceWM, which I did not report yet. There are really tiny indeed, and do not really bother me. But I should ideally try to be a good citizen. I guess that their bug reporting system frightened me, as not being usable through email. It requires live Internet-connection. Hi all, When i first decided to run Linux ( 2.2.14-5.0) on my server 2 months ago.. i bought a machine with 2 SCSI 9 Gb hard drives.. i meant to implement a software RAID system.. but being a newbie ... i thought i'd install Linux first and then setup RAID once i learnt a little bit more about the OS ...:-( I have 4 primary partitions on /dev/sda /dev/sda1 - /boot 50 Mb /dev/sda2 - swap 128 Mb /dev/sda3 - / 6.5 Gb /dev/sda4 - /home 2.5 Gb I don't need more space on this machine in the forseeable future ... How best can i use /dev/sdab for backing up purposes ? I already backup my system to tape using taper ......... [SLE] leafnode and fetchnews

Hi everybody I have installed a Suse 6.3 distribution and I have the following problem I would like to use x3d but I get this error message : $ x3d /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/x3d/xwing.obj X error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 70 (X_PolyFillRectangle) Serial number of failed request: 234 Current serial number in output stream: 264 is there something wrong with X11 ? How can I fix that ? If it is an isa pnp card you are going to have to configure /etc/isapnp.conf Use pnpdump to get a template, then modify it to match where you want to place the irq's io addresses and dma numbers (you can get these from Window$ 98) Then you will have to build the driver as a module and feed those numbers into /etc/conf.modules as options for the driver and see that isapnp is run doing boot (using yast or modifying the line in /etc/rc.config by hand to be: # # Should isapnp be used to initialize your PNP at bootup? (yes/no) # START_ISAPNP=yes If it is either a PCI card or an isa non-pnp card, you can just feed the settings into /etc/conf.modules and it should work.
