[SLE] NFS permissions

I have 2 SuSE 6.4 machines. The first is my NFS server (Im using the kernel based nfs). Its exports file has the line: /shared/ns 192.168.0.0/255.255.0.0 (rw,no_root_squash) The /shared/ns directory is marked 777. The client machine mounts the directory fine, but it is mounted as a read-only mount. The client fstab has this line: tmkstore:/shared/ns /usr/ns nfs defaults 0 0 Ive also tried tmkstore:/shared/ns /usr/ns nfs rw 0 0 Ive also tried mounting from the command line using mount -t nfs -o rw stmkstore:/shared/ns /usr/ns However, I always get a read-only mounted filesystem. I am doing all this as root. I havent had these problems with previous versions of SuSE. I want to use the new kernel NFS to take advantage of some of the new functionality. Does anyone have tips? I could see a user running a script or executable that would send out e-mails but basic system files (such as the registry if there were one on Linux) aren't going to be overwritten on a decent multi-user system. [SLE] problem with yast and kernel too big

Hello ! This started out as an RE to a message on the KDE-Alpha list. Then I realized that it has relevence to the SuSE list as well. I hope I don't offend by cross posting. > Are you using SuSE? One thing I didn't do was sleep, and that doesn't help the memory too much. I got so darn frustrated with SuSEconfig fighting with my QTDIR && KDEDIR that I yanked out the kde1 and qt1 stuff and symlinked qt to qt2 as well as kde to kde2. I've already vented on the SuSE list regarding the adhoc way X logins are handled. I actually came up with the term "GOTO hell" to describe this method of programming. The scripts are rafe with non-returning branch statements. This is not a *SuSE* or even a *Linux* issue, its a Un!x issue. I have a vision of handeling all configuratons in an LDAP database. In addition I believe this whole problem space lends itself to and OO solution. I am just becoming a professional programmer. I'm learning in Java. I don't know if Java would be a reasonable language to handle this. Perhaps I need to brush up on my C++. I only used it in college, and that was only one class. I took a few classes that required C, and I do like the language. I am working on a similar challenge on my day job. Currently the amount of scripting involved in the user logon process in Un!x is a dirty little secret. If this issue were cleaned up, and made more intelligibe by an industry accepted API, Un!x would probably grow a lot faster. What I'm thinking is that each application would either use an existing schema and create an instance of a predefined LDAP object to store its configuration, or if needed, the creator could deliver his own scheme extention with his product. Or if your name is Rachel it would be "her" own scheme. Each application would be able to have one entry per instance of installation. Or perhaps even a subtree. Boy does this sound familiar?.... Hey, I never said they were stupid, just that they are bullies. Anyhow, I just wanted to share this brainstorm. Take it FWIW. Does any one know if Panasonic DVD-RAM drives work under linux, and if so any hints or tips would be welcome. Yes, I have that setup running with 2 400's clocked to 500. The board is very stable and there was little I had to do to get it to work. [SLE] NFS problems, it locks up, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a fresh install of SuSE 6.3 and FreeBSD 4.0. The SuSE machine is the NFS server and FreeBSD the client. I am able to mount a directory on the FreeBSD box and list directories on the mount. As soon as I try to copy over a file, the NFS connections locks on me. What do I have setup incorrectly? More info: With previous installs of SuSE 6.2 I tried setting one Linux up as an NFS server and another as client. I ran into the EXACT same problem. I have a feeling that I do NOT have something configured correctly on the SuSE end of things. This is the status of my SuSE rc.config file: START_PORTMAP="yes" NFS_SERVER="yes" USE_KERNEL_NFSD="yes" USE_KERNEL_NFSD_NUMBER="4" NFS_SERVER_UGID="no" REEXPORT_NFS="no" Do I need to compile the Linux kernel in some special way? I am using the default SMP kernel. Is there some daemon I need to have running? In the O'Reilly book it talks about biod on the client and the rpc.lockd and rpc.statd daemon's on the server. What daemons do I need running on the SuSE NFS server and FreeBSD client? (As soon as I have this working with the FreeBSD client, there will be a SuSE client, too). Any points folks have is very much appreciated!!!!!
