Jaton Commumicator V90 internal ISA , Has jumpers that dissable PnPray and set irq/com ports. [SuSE Linux] Compiling 2.2x kernel with sound

I can't succeed in this. I tried three versions : 2.2.5, 2.2.7, 2.2.9. My sound card is a Sound Blaster compatible and I know how to compile the 2.0.36 kernel for it. One solution to Netscaoe Java crashes...

It seems that starting with the 6.x series of Linux (based on my experience with RH 6.0...with the java fix in place...as well as Suse 6.1), Netscape 4.5x and higher has been very prone to intermittent lockups...seemingly java related. I came very close today to nuking both these RH & SuSE and going back to Mandrake 5.3 which has always been rock solid for me. Increasingly we are computing in a browser centric environment, and since Netscape has no strong replacement at hand, an unstable Netscape is a show stopper for me. Before taking this unfortunate step, I decided to try loading the last version of Netscape I found to be very stable...4.08. It is available by ftp from the Netscape site. I dl'ed and installed it OVER the existing 4.51 SuSE version hoping that this would keep scripts and Help links in place. Well 'lo and behold, Netscape at version level 4.08 no longer freezes on several sites that routinely caused java lockups, and all the Help links seem to still function fine.
