[SuSE Linux] KDM won't start

I had this thing working on a previous install. Now when I try to start a config I get the notice that there is no type line in the config file. If I click on kdmrc I get a shutdown. Any clues? [SuSE Linux] Serial configuration

Hello, Does anyone know how to configure serial ports in Linux? How can you tell if your serial irq' etc are OK? I've tried stty but can't make much sense of it. How do you recompile serial.o? Tried all sorts but can't get it to work but commes back with 'No such rule in Rules.make'. I'm still desperately trying to get my serial comms to work so any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried Maelstrom again today.....it's still "busted." It will NOT work with the OSS drivers. I'm surprised a fixed version didn't ship with 5.3. [SuSE Linux] Expert HELP! libncurses.so.3.0/4.0?

I had the kde up and running under libc2, qt4, compiled with egcs with two exceptions, I could not log on using KDM and I could not launch kvt. When I ldd /opt/kde/bin/kvt I saw that it was looking for libncurses.so.4.0. I looked and all I had on my system was 3.0 so I ran YAST to install the libncurses rpm and kvt started working. YAST gave me a warning that i4.0 conflicted with 3.0. Well now the system won't boot. Says it can't find libncurses.3.0. I mounted from the S.u.S.E. disk and did a find /usr -name libncurses* and found only libncurses.so.3.0 -> /lib/libncurses.so.4.0.1. I did not see libncurses.so.4.0.1 under /lib. I then tried to ln -s /lib/libncurses.so.3.0.980228 /usr/lib/libncurses.so.3.0 and rebooted. I still get an error that the system can open libncurses. I then went and looked at the /lib again and there is no libncurses.so.3.0.980228 in lib. The symlink is still there, so I know the file had to be there when I made the symlink. Even stranger there is a libncurses.so.4.0.1 in /lib now. I baffled. Does anyone have any suggestion? What I am most interested in is, will libncurses.so.3.0 cause the system not to boot? I am using dump to backup my suse 5.3 server. I want to be able to restore if a total failure occurs. Hello, I'm a long-time Linux user, but extremely new to SuSE. I'm having a bit of a problem that I'm not sure how to solve cleanly. I'd like my normal users to be able to start a PPP connection to my ISP. In order to do that, I added the users to the dialout group (per a set of instructions that I read somewhere -- Users' Manual maybe?). They are still unable to start PPP, being given an error reading: /etc/suseppp/generic.options: access denied Now, if I change the permissions on /etc/suseppp/generic.* to 660, all is fine. Unfortunately, anytime SuSEconfig runs, it resets the perms on that file. I've grep'ed through the /etc/permissions* stuff, but didn't see anything in those to point out where the permissions are being reset from. Anyone have an idea? Finally, am I going about this incorrectly? Is there something I should be using instead? I've just upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3 and come across a small problem. Previously, when logged in as myself, I could su to root and start an application from within an xterm, for example tkdesk. This is handy for browsing and selecting system files that require me to be root to examine or edit them. Since upgrading however, when I su to root and try to run an application from an xterm I get: stokes:/home/phil # Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server application-specific initialization failed: couldn't connect to display ":0.0" I seem to remember this cropped up when I first installed linux, but I can't for the life of me recall what I did to overcome it. I guess it must be a setting in an X related config file somewhere. Can anyone help please? Hi guys'n'gals. I see that the lthreads package is back at 0.5-14 and at least version 0.71 is out. I am sure you will include the lastet one available to you before going to press, it's just that the 0.5-14 wouldn't work with some of the newer programs I've downloaded and I'd like to be sure at least 0.71 gets into 6.0. Probably an even later version ;) The real reason for this message, however, is the semi-new DHCP client. You already include the server (how much setting up have you integrated in YaST by the way? I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it's 'big stuff' if SuSE is to be used in a business environment). What I would like to see is the client included and an easy way to set it up. I just tried running the precompiled glibc binary and it seemed to function enough to not sigfault. Great! [SuSE Linux] PCI NE2000 ethernet adaptor and 2.035 kernel

Hi, I have my pci Realtek 8029 card working fine under Suse 5.1 . I am happy with this distribution and am waiting for 6.0 to upgrade. I did download the new 2.035 kernel just to get fat32, and in menuconfig some basic changes were made to the pci ne2000 setup. First there is a separate entry for PCI NE2000, whereas in the 2.031 kernel I used "Other ISA cards". To be brief, I have the card working as displayed with cat /prov/net/dev . It shows eth0; however during bootup, I get a single "No SIOAFFADDER" (spelling?) It is almost as if the kernel tries to find the card twice? So, which of the make menuconfig are to be selected for a PCI NE2000 clone such as the Realtek 8029? Hia, I went and stole back my SuSE 5.2 from a friend. And I went and installed a mini SuSE system on the SCSI /dev/sda HardDrive and installed LILO on its /MBR and had it point to Linux and win98- which the win98 is on the IDE, and the SCSI HD is the boot disk. It had absolutly no problems. Windows is too stupid to know the SCSI was being read first(booted from) when picking win98 LILO from the SCSI. So having no problems I installed everything and the kitchen sink. ;) (still waiting for my SuSE 5.3 disks) Anyways here is my boot.msg from /var/log/ if you like to look at something.. I feel bad for those of you who haven't been able to compile WindowMaker-0.19.1 on 5.3. Until you get an answer and are able to compile it yourselves, I packaged a binary tgz for you to download if you want. It was built on S.u.S.E. 5.2 so should be fine on 5.3 and is just under 2 megs gzipped. A question I've just been asked which I realise I don't have a definite answer to. What is the maximum file size limit on the Linux ext2 file system? (At one time, there was a 2GB limit on an ext2 filesystem as a whole. I gather this has now been raised to 4 terabytes -- is this definitively true?) Someone I know did test this question a while ago by doing cat /dev/zero > filename and it stopped when the size of "filename" hit 2GB, from which he inferred that the 2GB size limit still applies, but to files as opposed to filesystems. If there's a FAQ, HOWTO or other definitive documentation about this I'd be most obliged for a pointer. Hello, OK so the rule "If it ain't broke don't fix it," may have some basis in truth. Further to my previous weeping and wailing I have sort of sorted the problem. Zentara said and I agree that there is confusion in config.modules eth0 was loading ne.o instead of ne2k-pci.o. This is, I think caused by the initial set up program. Manually editing this file and setting options io= and irq= gets the right drivers loaded. However, the biggest Eureka goes to the discovery that a warm boot from Windoze really screws up the PCI bus. A clean DOS boot disk followed by a quicker loadlin saw the network card recognised and the drivers loaded, hooray! Unfortunately... two more problems now occur. 1. Pinging a Win98 box with it's IP number gets a "network unreachable..." 2. TKDesk in X now locks up the computer so bad I have to do a hard reset! I really want this Linux thing to work, I am attempting to set up a model Intranet to show my boss who quite rightly feels that Microsoft's bloatware offerings are overkill. One Linux box accessed by several Win 9x clients is a cost effective system; what am I doing wrong? IŽm little bit of a newbie on Linux so please donŽt flame me. I have tried to get wvdial-1.0 to work. In the README file it says that i need GCC 2.7.2 or higher.. I have SuSE 5.3 with 2.7.2.1. But when i type make it says that it canŽt find G++. ArenŽt it suppose to be installed with the gcc packet? I find it in the man pages. Hello, Well after countless rebootin, reading the F& manual and blind trying, I have SuSE Linux 5.2 working on my system, including X windows system. Now, if I could get my modem to work under it. <g> Using YaST I setup my modem, but it does not seem to work. Neither minicom nor Seyon, not to mention pppd seemt to be able to get it. My modem is a Motorola VoiceSurfer 56K PnP. Anyone can suggest something? Hello: I need help! I am trying to install S.u.S.E. Linux 5.2. I have found the installation generally straight forward except for one thing, I can't get my network card to work. It is a LinkSys EtherPCI LAN CARD II which is reported by the set up program as an ne2000 clone. This coresponds with the information given by LinkSys on their web site which recommends the ne2k-pci.o driver. Under Win98 the card works fine with TCP/IP and is reported at i/o 0xFCE0 - FCFF and irq=9, but seems undetectable under Linux, it is either reported as absent or "device busy" when atempting to load the correct module. Having tried every possible combination of settings I can find I am now at a loss. The following messages are displayed at boot time; Setting up network device eth0 SIOCSIFADDR: No such device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device which I realise means the driver isn't installing despite being set up in YAST Can you please provide a step by step guide to setting this card up from the root prompt(I am a unix newbie)or point me in the right direction. I normally try to work things like this out for myself but this time I am completely confused.
