RS/6000 43p 140 does not boot (SuSE 7.1)

Hello everybody. Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ? I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html (ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,\zImage In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical: The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so). The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that. The system freezes (or reboots after a long time). (None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.) So obviously, none of these approaches works for me. What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied as files on an MS-DOS disk? Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p. BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251. Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions. PPP: Authentication failure

Hallo! I configured my modem and PPP through YaST and wvdial.conf in Suse 7.3 on my Powerbook Firewire. What I haven't been able to solve so far is an authentication dialog failure between the modem and the provider (my university). University modem pool support could only confirm my settings but otherwise does not support Linux. Thus, maybe somebody here would have an idea what I am still missing to get the modem running. I tried to take over the settings from my MacOS partition for which the modem is connecting fine. Those are: Remote Access: registered user, username, password, phone number Options: redial off, allow error correction and compression in modem, use TCP header compression Modem: 56k, sound on, dialing tone, do not ignore dialing tone TCP/IP: Connect via PPP, Configure: using PPP server (there is a nameserver IP, but university support said that that is bogus) In linux the provider part in wvdial.conf looks like this: [Dialer UofC] Ask Password = 0 Auto DNS = 1 Auto Reconnect = 0 DNS1 = DNS2 = Demand = no Idle Seconds = 180 Inherits = Dialer modem0 Password = [password] Phone = [number] Provider = UofCModem Username =[username] YaST2 Record = provider I am connecting using Kinternet and the log gives me the following messages: ... Entering PPP mode Async interface address is unnumbered (Loop back 1) Your IP address [number]. MTU is 1500 bytes Header compression will match your system. -> Looks like a welcome message -> Starting pppd at [date] -> pid of pppd: 7356 -> PPP was killed (signal 11) -> Disconnecting We are disconnected. -> PPP daemon has died. Installation problem Suse 7.1 PPC on IBM B50

Hello there, i'm trying to install suse 7.1 ppc on an IBM RS/6000 B50 server. i tried installing it accordingly to the instructions on the manual but was faced with serious problems. after booting from the CD 2 ( CHRP Based computers ) the boot process freezes at: ramdisk loaded at 0x1900000, size 753253 bytes instantiating rtas at 00600000 ... done copying OF device tree... done returning 01400000 from prom_init we have looked all around for help, including Suse's knowledge database, google and other places with no success. the server is installed with AIX and functioning perfectly. it does not look like a hardware problem. please help, i have never seen anything like it before and it is not mentioned anywhere. thank you -- Alex 1100001 1101100 1100101 1111000 1100001 1110100 1011010 1100101 1110010 1101111 1001011 1100101 1101100 1110110 1101001 1101110 1100100 1101111 1110100 1100011 1100011

Hi, Is anyone running freeswan on SuSE 7.3/PPC with kernel 2.4.16? Mine did not work because the module ipsec.o is missing. Rolling my own did not work because the freeswan kernel patches did not apply. Maybe anyone has already an spm for freeswan 1.95? Uwe

PowerStack Series E, installing 7.3

Hi, I had the chance to spend a few hours installing plain 7.3 on a Motorola PowerStack Series E with 64MB RAM and a 604 CPU. Not a whole lot of time, but I noticed a few things up to now that may be of interest as I couldn't find comments anywhere on these topics. - While I could boot the first CD, the machine froze after the message "Uncompressing" when trying to set up the RAMDISK. Couldn't find a way to get around this. Is the PReP CD boot kernel known to be broken? - I used some very old (6.4?) install disks I still had somewhere to boot a kernel far enough to get to the 7.3 CDs. Didn't have much success putting the kernel image available with 7.3 onto floppy disks. They are apparently larger than 1.44MB. Oh well. - The PowerStack in question was AIX formatted. The install process will not allow partitioning and will not(!) issue an error message. I used a separate virtual console to manually pre-partition the disk to a DOS empty state to be able to install the system. Took me a while to figure that out. - Debian documents a "bootargs" PPCBUG variable which apparently the SuSE kernel doesn't support. I hacked the kernel content for the root partition name. Would be nice though if it supported bootargs. - /usr/X11R6/bin/sax doesn't exist. Well, sax.sh does, but that's not what sax2 tells me. Anyway, XF86 V3/4 apparently isn't set up to support the Cirrus chipset as both sax and sax2 freeze the machine with a black screen eventually. Interesting enough, X itself starts up in 640*480with FBDev on top of CLgen,cfb8 but sax/sax2 won't ever. X freezes up the machine *very* easily on just a few mouse clicks. I guess for now I have to avoid X. - "halt" doesn't. The machine will reboot and doesn't stop. Actually, no PPC kernel ever halted on the PowerStacks that I tried. Wonder why. Does anyone use an Acard IDE-Adapter?

Hello! I have an old PPC 9500 with a built-in scsi-bus (2 actually) and an Acard PCI-IDE-Card (AEC6260R). I have SuSE 7.3 on the old scsi-drive sda. The program does recognize the IDE-card and the drive attached to it, but I get boot-messages like hde: lost interrupt, lost irq func only, dma_chipset ???, and the drive is being probed for ages. I tried to install Macos under MOL on it, but I gave up, because it takes ages. It will probably run all night for an installation. Has anyone solved these problems? Marianne

PCI IDE SCSI Bridge -- can't mount drive

hi I'm new to the list so hopefully this isn't already covered in the archives. I've looked, but can't find much on this topic... installed suse 7.1 via ftp on a PowerComputing PowerTower Hardware config: Sonnet Cresendo G3 upgrade card (195Mhz Linux/300Mhz MacOS) Sonnet Tempo Ultra ATA 66 PCI card with an ATA drive attached (Seagate Barracuda 18 Gig) Internal SCSI drive 2Gig (Quantum Fireball) Internal SCSI CDROM reader Internal ZIP100MB also on internal SCSI bus 224mb ram IMS TwinTurbo 4Mb video card installation was successful, but the only drive that's mountable is the internal SCSI drive. this is the drive with Linux. the MacOS is installed on the ATA drive. I've partitioned the ATA drive with pdisk and know that it is partitioned to my satisfaction. the mac os has about 600Mb partition, the rest is supposed to be the /home and some swap space. in order to get pdisk to see the drive --> /dev/scsi1.2 had to be specified. i guess that the PCI card is an IDE/SCSI bridge; so its on a separate bus from the internal one. The MacOS boots fine from the ATA drive. I can't mount the ATA drive in Linux. lspci --vv sees the PCI card. by all accounts, I should be able to mount the drive. has anyone had a similar problem? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks -andy

BTW I have no problem to boot installed system with CD1 but it is longer. All the partitions are in order. The problem lies only at the boot partition I suppose. ipadresses hopping interface assignments

I have suse linux PPC 7.1 with kernel version 2.4.3. my IP addresses appear to be hopping interface assignemnts for example I set up the network adapters as such 192.50.1.21 = eth0 192.50.1.22 = eth1 192.50.1.23 = eth2 this should mean that any incoming connections to these ip adresses connect with only these interfaces, right? well, i am finding that incoming connections to these adresses are hopping interface assigments possible outcomes are (but not limited to): 192.50.1.21 => eth2 192.50.1.22 => eth0 192.50.1.23 => eth1 does anyone have any any ideas why this would happen? Alain, if you like the "linux" way better, you may wish to try out the gnu-darwin collection at http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/, it works more like linux in the directory structures and everything. To tell the truth, I thought fink was kinda funky that way, I liked the linux/unix directory structure better (most all stuff in /usr/local/bin /usr/local/lib etc etc). Also you may need to get/install the developer tools, as I don't recall if gcc and assorted stuff is installed by default. It's a free download from the apple developers area. Note that both of these are fairly sizable downloads, gnu-darwin is 650mb, and the developers tools was 200mb???(I forget, but large). If you got a lot of bandwith, it will just take hours to get, instead of days. Both are available on silver platters with $$. Last if you stay with fink, just make sure to add the directories /sw/fink/bin to your directory path. failed dependencies nightmare

Hi all, I'm wanting to upgrade my kernel from 2.2.16 to 2.4.16 and as I understand it a part of this process is to upgrade modutils .. trouble is, when I try to upgrade modutils I get this error - root@darkside:/usr/src/packages/RPMS/ppc > rpm -Uhv modutils.rpm error: failed dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadIsBzip2) <= 3.0.5-1 is needed by modutils-2.4.11-9 If I try to upgrade bzip I get yet another failed dependency error - root@darkside:/usr/src/packages/RPMS/ppc > rpm -Uhv bzip.rpm error: failed dependencies: libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2) is needed by bzip-1.0.1-25 and if I try to install glibc I get a whole bunch of dependency errors... webcam applications

Hello, I have just bought a Philips PCVC740K (ToUCam Pro) webcam which is supported in Linux. It works, but the GUI applications for using it seem to be just one: xawtv. There is camE which takes decent images but is not gui and runs as a deamon. Then there is CamStream, a QT application that I can't get to build. It looks great, has anybody got this to work? What are people using with their webcams on PPC boxes? Any help much appreciated! Thanks Joss --

Dvorak keyboard

How do I set Dvorak keyboard emulation in SuSE 3.7? Currently I am stuck in USA/English Qwerty. I'm on a PowerBook G3 bronze, pre Firewire. Sax2 and Yast2 warn me that my system is set to Xfree86 v3 because my video card is not compatible with Xfree86 v4 and that I should therefore configure with Sax: /usr/X11R6/bin/sax But my standard SuSE 3.7 installation does not have sax there, only sax2 and a file 'sax.sh' that opens sax2 when I open it, judging from the sax2 graphic in the resulting window. When I activate and set Dvorak in KDE's: Preferences > Peripherals > Keyboard, I get a totally b*a*n*a*n*a*s keyboard. Maybe that is because there is no Mac keyboard model available in the pop up menu there. So I reset that control panel to its original '[] Disable keyboard layouts' setting and return to Qwerty. How do I set Dvorak keyboard emulation in SuSE 3.7? Please help, Roger :-) trapped in Qwerty

Losing time

I am running SuSE 7.3 on a new G4/800 (single processor) and have noticed that the clock is losing about 3 minutes every 24 hours or so. I have never had any problems like this on any other system. I booted up OS X last night planning to let it run overnight to see if it was losing time as well (I normally run Linux 24 hours a day). Upon booting OS X, the time was immediately corrected! I don't think I have NTP enabled (still running the factory install of OS X) but I should double check to be sure. Assuming that I don't have NTP enabled, doesn't that mean that the hardware clock is keeping correct time and thus it is the Linux system time that is drifting? I've been researching the issue a bit and have run across the /etc/adjtime file. Mine just has one line of zeroes (0.0 0 0.0) so there is nothing strange going on there (unless it is supposed to be non-zero, of course). I noticed that the TZ environment variable is not set for my normal user account nor the root account but I did set the timezone during installation and it is set properly in the Control Center. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Do I really need to run ntpd? I've never had to before. Do I just need to do some adjustments with hwclock? Thanks, Ron

I'd like to buy a new PW 550 and so I'm interested what are the reasons for using suse ppc or yellowdog-linux etc. Do you have old hardware that it's not fulfilling the huge hardware-needs of OSX or are there other reasons. adjtimex 1.13 hangs my machine

I downloaded, built and installed adjtimex-1.13. I stopped xntpd, waited a while for the time to drift and ran adjtimex --compare as is mentioned in the documentation. My machine hung immediately. I had to force reboot and then learn about restoring the journal on my two EXT3 filesystems (system wouldn't boot). I rebooted, stopped xntpd again, waited a while and ran adjtimex --compare again with the same result (though learning how to restore the journal was easier this time ;). There was no information in the adjtimex documentation that I could see that said anything about needing a certain kernel version. So, should I try an older adjtimex package (1.12) or should I upgrade to the 2.4.16 kernel on SuSE's FTP server and try that with adjtimex 1.13? I am running a stock SuSE 7.3 system with kernel 2.4.12. Thanks, Ron

8500 with an accelerator card

I still use Classic on my main desktop, but X on my iBook. The main reason I haven't fully switched is that I'm waiting for a few more programs to be carbonized. The frustrating thing with Aqua is that it's still a bit immature. Some nice GUI features of Classic are gone. Specifically, I miss spring loaded folders and I wish the finder windows would come up to the front when you click on the desktop. However, I've heard they're coming back in 10.1.3, which should be out any day now. The biggest problem I've had, however, is that Aqua has a hard time with windows holding a lot of documents. Open up a window and the response time is slow. Scrolling is slow, clicking on triangles is slow, etc. Now open it up in classic and you'll see that it's *much* faster. Project Builder is a nice IDE for X. I'm taking Java classes right now, and it works well. It does lack a lot of features that the commercial IDEs have, though. However, for basic java dev, it's more than adequate. You may want to try JBuilder if Project Builder doesn't suit you. I actually use JBuilder instead of Project Builder. I want to support X, and I do need it for development work. With MS XP or Windows 2000 the speed is higher than in KDE but even with KDE and XFree 4 (Mandrake 8.1)working is no problem except of the lack of some programs(Homesite,Photoshop). But what is the experience with OS X? Do you have to wait while resizing a window? Let's say working with a PB 550 with 512 MB RAM. How is it to develop JavaApps? Me either, until this new G4/800. Are you talking about sleep? I am not using any sort of power saving or sleep features. It just runs normally all day long with the display blanked via DPMS when not in use. I wouldn't think that pulling out the Radeon 7500 and putting in a Rage 128 Pro would affect the system time (in the kernel, not the hardware clock which seems to be keeping correct time). ( I could not configure the XServer properly to work with this card..Resolutions, Geometry etc) (and when I tried to fix one Problem, there were at least two new Probs or the system would refuse to work at all ;(( ) after I went to Xfree.org and had a look on the supported Cards, I decided to get a Voodoo 3 2000.. flashed it with the 12b Rom Driver...this works well under MacOS 8.6 But when I start Linux (BootX) I will run just into the same troubles I had with the former Videocard.. Every additional Bootparameter (eg: video=tdfxfb or a checked video of box ) will result in a black screen just after the first few prints on the screen...last message before the screen turns black is about the voodoo. Starting without parameters will lead me to runlevel 5 with a screen that is compressed to half on the left side of the screen, height is correct. Switching to runlevel 3, running sax2 does not work, neither a simple sax2, nor sax2 -f, nor sax2 -m 0=tdfx...will get the card recognized What can be done / will be necessary to get the Voodoo working? I´ve read about patches that must be compiled into the Kernel!?? greetings Jo

I have a Dec 1999 g3 400 iMAc. Since I am about to install OSX 10.1 and OS 9.2, Apple indicates updating Firmware to 4.1.9 Anyone know if this will thwart my plans to install SuSe Linux 7.1 ? I read the following on the SuSE site, but it is a little vague: <<Apple Cronology * January 2001 * These machines have a newer firmware, the bootloader is unable to open the textmode * iMacs can be used with 7.1 * Cube, Titanium Powerbook G4 can be used with 7.1 * G4 can be used with 7.1, the Radeon and nVidia cards are unsupported, remove the SCSI card, onboard ethernet may not work * iBook2 works (unconfirmed), enter "boot cd:,\\yaboot" on the firmware prompt. * August 2000 * These machines have a newer firmware, the bootloader is unable to open the textmode * G4, Cube, iMac, iBook, Powerbook can be used with 7.0, kernel 2.2.18 recommended * the available Radeoncards are unsupported >> It seems to imply that the firmware on the newer macs is not compatible. swap useage

Could anyone explain to me why my machine uses swap space while there is still 50mb+ of real memory available. For the first time, the machine froze after swap reached 100% and I had to turn the machine off and reboot. I am using 7.3 with the 2.4.16 kernel and 256mb RAM. Thank you Joss --

Hello, My attempts to install suse-ppc 7.3 on a umax c600 have progressed further. The initial problem seems to have been my external scsi zip drive. With that drive disconnected, the kernel completes its initial loading and linuxrc executes partway. Since I'm booting from hard disk, it was also important to use the kernel argument hwprobe=-all (thanks Yvon!) The best results so far are with the 2.4.12 or 2.4.16 kernel ( I also tried 2.4.2). Linuxrc gets through the first few screens, where I select language and keyboard, and can review kernel messages. No glaring errors there. The problem seems to be mounting the CD in my internal scsi drive. Every time the install hangs while displaying the message "Attempting to mount CD" or something similar. With the 2.4.2 kernel, the install hangs just after selecting the keyboard, and I can't review the kernel messages. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! memory/swap usage with suse7.3

Hi everybody, I'm using suselinux7.3 (upgraded to 2.4.16) on a pismo (500 MHz with 512Mb of RAM, 77 Mb of swap space), with KDE2.2.1. I recently upgraded from suselinux7.0 (upgraded to benh kernel 2.4.9-benh0) and KDE1. It looks as if RAM usage is far from optimal in the most recent configuration. For instance, running a single job that requires 112Mb of RAM brings the system in a situation where over 450 Mb of RAM and 64 Mb of swap are actually used (according to top). The situation was much better with the old distribution where top was indicating memory usage of only of order 120 Mb of RAM and 0 Mb of swap in the same situation. With the original 2.4.12 kernel (coming with suse7.3), the situation was better than with 2.4.16 (although not as good as with suse7.0 and 2.4.9), but computing speed was significantly slower (by as much as 20%). ide-scsi emulation freezes system

Ide-scsi emulation has worked til kernel-2.4.7-pre3. With any newer kernel (I tried 2.4.10/2.4.12/2.4.16), mounting my ide-cdrom freezes the whole system. This must be ppc specific. My i386 system is working fine with 2.4.16. PPC platform is b&w g3. Has anyone on the list the same problem? Grüßli, Micha

Configuring X/SuSE 7.3

Hello, I had many problems configuring X on a Powerbook G3 (don't ask me which one, it is black and noting is written on the box to identify it): impossible to launch X server except once with color depth 8. SAX2 crashed and there is no good old SAX1 to try manual configuration. Thus I finally went to the following url and downloaded all the packages of XFree86 4.2.0 ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0/ I read the instructions of url: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_71_xf420.html What SuSE does not say is in what order to install the rpm packages and I had a lot of "missing dependencies" messages and lost a lot of time trying different sequences. Other loss of time: message like "conflict with XFree86 4.1 lib" or something like that. Thus I deleted all the X packages with Yast Finally I managed to install all the packages and ... miracle ... SAX2 worked without problem and I can now use KDE2 on my laptop at a resolution of 1024x768. My graphic card is a Ati Mach 64. -- Alain Barthélemy

I'm close to tears. Almost nothing in 7.3 works. First I had to use an old kernel because 2.2.12 is buggy. Then I had to change the X driver from ATI to fbdev, because mach64 is not recognized. Then AppleTalk crashed, I saw on the list archive where to download a newer version that worked. Now I try to set up my printer (epson stylus color 600). It worked in 7.0, using lprsetup. No such luck in 7.3: 1. In YAST1, I get an error attempting to print. 2. Using lprsetup, the device driver that used to work (stc600pl) is not recognized. Using stcolor, I get an error attempting to print. 3. Yast2 doesn't recognize the serial ports, which is a problem I saw two people mention in the list archive. Olaf said to look at /proc/tty/driver/macserial. I did that, everything seems to be OK. This doesn't surprise me, since I do manage to cat text into /dev/ttyS1 and have it printed. New G4/800 with Radeon 7500 and Apple 17" flat panel

Hi, I was able to complete a basic install of 7.3 on a new G4/800 (single processor) with an Apple 17" flat panel using yast2 (colors were messed up but useable). I was able to boot the new system without having to specify a kernel video parameter. Colors in X were messed up but useable. I then set run level 3 as the default until I could get XFree86 4.2.0 installed and working properly. The console worked fine (again, no kernel video parameter was needed). I then proceeded to upgrade to kernel 2.4.16 and modutils 2.4.11 as was mentioned in the following Support Database article: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/ubrueck_ppc_G4radeon.html I then followed the instructions in the following Support Database article to get the radeon framebuffer going with my Apple 17" flat panel: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_apple_tft.html Unfortunately, I could not get any combination to work (monitor went black). I tried the following combinations: video=radeon:1280x1024-8@60 video=radeonfb:1280x1024-8@60 video=radeon:vmode:17 video=radeonfb:vmode:17 I also tried not specifying a video parameter but that also resulted in a black screen. I am able to get useable video with video=ofonly. I then proceeded to upgrade to XFree86 4.2.0 using RPMs found at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0 I could not find an xf86glu RPM there and there were no complaints during the upgrade so I still have the 4.1.0 version installed. I did try to uninstall it but a bunch of other packages depended on it. I then attempted to configure 4.2.0 using the following command as was mentioned in the first article above: # sax2 -m 0=fbdev Colors were messed up again but still useable. It didn't detect my video card and when I tried to specify it, the list of Radeon models provided did not include the 7500 (not too surprising since it is new). I didn't know what to do at that point so I aborted configuration and am now writing this message. Should I have any expectation of getting accelerated X working on this system with an ADC flat panel? I am replacing my current G4/466 with the G4/800 and will be sending the G4/466 and the Apple 17" flat panel to my parents. The G4/466 has a Rage 128 Pro card in it which is working fine with my Apple 22" Cinema Display (which I am keeping). If I will be unable to get the Radeon 7500 working, I plan to swap the cards between the two systems and keep the Rage 128 Pro. Ron

Hi all, has anybody gotten any success with a Motorola Powerstack (PREP) machine and the onboard Cirrus Logic vga chip (GD 5434). I just compiled the most recent kernel I could get my hands on (2.4.18-pre7), the boot messages say -- clgen: Driver for Cirrus Logic based graphic boards, v1.9.9.1 RAM (2048 kB) at 0xc0000000, Cirrus Logic chipset on PCI bus clgen: This board has 2097152 bytes of DRAM memory Cirrus Logic video mode: 8 bit color depth Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30 -- but the screen is gabled (lots of vertical lines changing colours all the time)... hi there! i'm very happy about my running suse7.1 - system on my g4-titanium, but there are to problems left: 1.) booting with selection between macosX (first hfs+partition) macos9 (second hfs+partition) suselinux (third hfs partition) it would be so nice if i could select one of them with my mousepad - can anybody help me (PLEASE!) 2.) its so hard for me due to the cons.saver or the apmd (not running!) that everytime when i'm thinking the console switches to black and doesn't come back so that i have to switch to another and back if i want to continue my work. is there a possibility to turn this feature off completely or tty by tty ? can anybody help me (PLEASE!) btw. is there a special version for tleds/xtleds working on the powerbook? greetings to all of you... ben
