No sound from modem after upgrade to SuSE 7.3/PPC

I just upgraded to SuSE Linux 7.3/PPC on a Mac G4. Most everything went smoothly, but I can no longer get any sound from the internal modem. Under SuSE 7.0, you could hear the modem dialing and negotiating with the remote system, which provides some useful feedback. After a while, you can tell from the modem tones if there's a problem with the connection. After the upgrade to SuSE 7.3, there's just silence. The sound from the modem (when it's working) comes from the Mac's internal speaker, and from an external speaker if one is connected. It's not clear to me how software is involved in getting the sound signal from the modem to the speaker. To Linux, the modem looks like a serial device (/dev/ttyS0), and as far as I can tell, the only software that "knows" it's a modem is the dialer (wvdial in this case). I tried connecting directly to the modem with kermit, and selecting max volume like this: ATL3M2 ATDT<some-number> Still complete silence ... There's nothing wrong with the Linux sound configuration, which is working fine for applications like RealPlayer, etc. The modem has a Conexant (Rockwell) chipset, and ATI6 returns "RCV56DPF-PLL L8571A Rev 29.00/29.00". i don't succeed in installing linux 7.3 ppc on my imac 700. is there anybody who could give/send me an detailed instruction beginning with hd-partition ? when i follow the manual, the first problem appears when i start yast 2 which doesnt recognize the partition. the next problem is setting mount points... after installation i am not able to boot from the installed partition. Open Office 641b

Hello, Again, the latest version of Open Office crashes as soon as I click on the menu bar (not icons but on 'file' for example). This occured in the last release that came with SuSE 7.3PPC. Is anyone else experiencing this? In this state, it is unusuable for me. All advice appreciated. thanks joss --

There was a problem with the following macro #define VALPARM(y) ((va_list) y) It should be #define VALPARM(y) va_list y But now it works. Thanks a million Kevin. Hi Jacob, Arrgghh! They are passing addresses of va_lists all over the place. Under ppc linux and s390 linux, va_list is actualy based on an array type. So they are trying to pass the address of the array (which itself is a pointer) and all hell breaks loose. They then assume the *args is a va_list argument everyplace. Passing addresses of a va_list is not portable in any way AFAIK. I have no idea if what I did even compiles but you should get the general idea. Just think that va_list is an array. Taking the address of an array makes no sense (you pass the array and it is automatically a pointer) and then taking the contents of that also can be an issue. Hi List I'm having a problem with a program called Kannel. I'm trying to compile it on my IBM 44P model 270 with SuSE 7.3 PPC installed. It compiles ok but when I run it I get a Segmentation Fault. After debugging it I found out that there is a difference in the way that va_arg works on different platforms. I've been told to try to update my glibc to the latest version but I have version 2.2.4-19, which I think is the latest. Then I've been told to try Darwin. As I've understood it's another compiler, right? Is there a ppc rpm for this? By the way, is there an ftp site where I can get the latest updates for SuSE Linux 7.3 PPC? Jacob

CD-ROM Icon [OT]

This is slightly off topic, but since I not a mac person at all (got a 7200/90 from someone), I am not sure if I did something wrong or not. This is probably a stupid question, but shouldn't there be a CD-ROM icon on the desktop when I am in MacOS? I am not very familiar with Mac at all. I had installed PPC 6.4, but recently got 7.3. I just wanted to reinstall using 7.3, but the CD-ROM icon does not show up. I have tried CD1 and CD2, and the CDs from the 6.4 distro, but I do not see the icon. I want to open it so that I can invoke bootx to do the install. The CD-ROM getting found, since I can see it in the "Silverlining" program that shows the SCSI devices. I had even bought another CD-ROM thinking my CD-ROM was bad...but same results. Am I totally missing something here? I had added some hard drives, but removed them thinking that may have caused it, but no. Does the CD-ROM have to be a specific SCSI ID? Setting up serial Printer in SuSE 7.3

Hi, I am using SuSE 7.3 on a PowerMac G3., Kernel 2.4.12. I have a modem connected to the first serial port /dev/ttyS0 and a printer to the second serial port /dev/ttyS1. Unfortunately this second serial port is not recognized by YAST2 so I can not set up the printer because I can not choose the second serial port. Setting up the printer via YAST does also not work ( I choose the printer under yast, and the set the serial speed with the command stty 57600 raw -echo crtscts </dev/ttyS1 ). This procedure worked with SuSE 7.1 Does anybody have an idea ? Best regards Alfred

DSL with 7.3

Hello, Before getting into too many details, is anyone with a Mac G4 tower (400 MHz) that can show me how to setup an ethernet DSL connection? I just installed 7.3 and have DirectTV Broadband. But whatever I do I can't get the connection. The eth0 device keeps turning with an unknown error. I have a static IP address with static Gateway that connected to a broadband router. I tried the ADSL setup and also the ethercard setup but can't get the eth0 device to even startup. LINUX PPC 7.3 G4 500DP Installation Help wanted

Hi: Is there anyone on this list who has successfully installed the Linux PPC 7.3 on a G4 Dual 500 ( Sept 2000 edition)? I am having problems installing it using the tips seen in the manual including the drag Linux boot to the linux boot partition, using alt+apple +O+ F boot up command line etc Monitor I am using is the E771 viewsonic Background: The software was installed on a StarMax 5000 250 with this same monitor but ended up using the Text interface because SaX2 failed. So I switched over to the G4 to see if I can get it to install satisfactorily. Help !! Ayudame!!

updating kernel - modutils

Hi all, I'm in the process of upgrading my suse 7.0 kernel to k_deflt-2.4.2-11.ppc.rpm I understand I need to update the ppp and modutils as well, I updated the ppp with ppp-2.4.0-3.ppc.rpm and then tried to update modutils and got this message error: failed dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadIsBzip2) <= 3.0.5-1 is needed by modutils-2.4.11-9 The actual kernel upgrade seemed to install ok but I have rebooted yet to see if it's working or not... where do I get this rpmlib thing? many thanks. Thanks for the information, last night I was working with a fresh install of 7.3 with the 2.4.10 kernel, I then booted into that with an older kernel I think 2.4.x from 7.1. This allowed me to get into a screwed up graphic mode and I then ran sax2 which said I was using kde 3x and it was going to start 4x. Amazingly I got a perfect screen so it can be configured if you just can get into sax2, I believe I played with the matrox g200 driver. It was perfect but I lost it when I logged out. On the next login it was strange, but I got it to the point that If I can get it working again should I look at some parametes (that would show me the parameters built so I then could document it for other unfortunates and then I could modify the sax2 -a build files) Also, I used to be an assembly programmer and used to play with device drivers (many years ago, so maybe I could look at the driver imsttfb in the kernel from 2.4 and see if I could get that to work. proc does not copy kernel

Copy the kernel manually inserting CD 1 and proceeding as follows: mount /cdrom dd if=/cdrom/suse/images/zImage.prep of=/dev/sda1 I am a little confused, if I use bootx is this true, and how do I get into the command mode as I am in the graphical installer when it says reboot. Also, if I am using the oldworld kernel is the above instruction still correct. >

problems trying to force framebuffer device in 7.3

I am trying to install 7.3, I tried to set m11i=fbdev so yast2 would not start in vga mode, this did not work for me. I used kernal arguments video=ofonly m11i=fbdev wind up with no x11 config When I log in I try sax2 -m 0=fbdev it says card is not supported. I was trying to follow the help for configuring an unsupported card using the frambuffer. so I tried sax2 -a to force a config then sax2 -m 0=fbdev which failed then a startx which seemed to load fbdev then I got a message weight(000) not equal depth 32 I have a ims twin turbo btw. any help is appreciated.

umax s900 ims twin turbo works on 7.1 dies on 7.3 also dhcp

I was excited to get the new 7.3, however I have two major problems. I am using vmlinuz-oldworld kernel , what is the one install oldworld. the install color is screwed up in dev=imsttfb , so I set novideo, when yast2 tried to set up x11 , no mode would work so I have no KDE. It worked fine in 7.1 with the 2.4.x kernel on the cd. Help also sax2 also says it does not know about the card. My network dhcp initialized fine with my 3 com card in 7.1 , now it says it can't find dhcp in 7.3 no response. I also have an internal apple card. I was really hoping to go forward not backwards, PS the install is very pretty

OpenOffice.org is based on the same source tree (with a few minor differences) as the upcoming StarOffice 6.0. It basically supplies an almost drop in replacement for Microsoft Office (and is getting better with every release). New in this release: - lots of stability improvements and bug fixes - now includes Mozilla 0.94 and higher AddressBook support For more information including the full source code check out the OpenOffice.org website: http://www.openoffice.org This binary should run on any ppc linux system with glibc 2.2.1 or higher, XFree86 4.0 or higher, etc. This includes YellowDogLinux 2.0 and 2.1, SuSE 7.3, MandrakeSoft 8.1, and DebianPPC (has been tested under Debian Sid). PLEASE NOTE: If you have the URW fonts installed, please upgrade them to the very latest versions from your distribution type (copies of the RedHat RawHide urw-fonts src and noarch rpms are available on the download sites) since older URW fonts have some minor corruption that can make OpenOffice anti-aliased text segfault (and yes we are working on making freetype much more robust to corrupt Type 1 font data). KDE2.2.2 terminates upon start-up

Hi, I am trying to get KDE2.2.2 working on my G3 powerbook Firewire running Suse 7.0 ppc. All the rpms from Suse.de's website are installed and all dependency problems solved (done in Fvwm2). After the installation I modified /opt/kde/share/config and added "kde2" as choice in the session type menu. I then exited Fvwm2, and in kdm logged in as user choosing kde2. KDE2 seems to start (background changes to a lighter blue/grey background), stays there shortly, then terminates and single user mode comes up which is immediately starting kdm again. Thinking that I might not have configured some configuration file, I was executing /sbin/SuSEconfig in single user mode. But that did not bring about any improvement, KDE2 still terminates exactly as before. I had the same problem when I wanted to get KDE2.2.1 running earlier this fall. So far I have been using KDE1 (version that came with Suse 7.0 CDs) which seems to do just fine, but would like to update for KDEOffice. At this point I have no clue how to go on. I might just not have performed a necessary step. If not, is there any possibility to find out at exactly which point KDE2 is terminating to get a hint as to what to do next? Does anyone know what is going on? Please answer newbie-friendly! Thanks! I have just 7.1 installed on a 8600 about a week ago. Still trying to figure out what everything is. (Sorry, if it's not mac classic, I'm lost) Most of what you guys are saying is gibberish to me. I used to think I catch on fast, but... I'm not interested in using it as a desk top, just a server, web and file, and fire wall. Headless would be nice. I have used Apple Share IP (ok) and have OS X 1.2 (junk, red headed step child!) I am looking to set it and forget it. (yea, I know. But I can dream, can't I?) My questions are: 1. What is the difference in 7.1 and 7.3. I finally got this installed and am wondering what I am missing with the new version. 2. How can I change the resolution of the monitor? Everything is so big! I am using the KDE desk top. With the others, I just keep getting errors and crashing. 3. The manual doesn't tell you everything. What would be a good text book to get that doesn't talk like I need another dictionary to decipher it? Thanks in advance! Any and all input is greatly appreciated! -- Thank You, George "do it now.
