VGA setting

Hi, I am using the SuSE 7.1 Linux with a Power Mac G3, 128 MB Ram, BootX Version 1.2b3. If I boot into the 2.2.18 Kernel the VGA mode is OK ( like I am used from the MAC side ( 1024*768). If I use the 2.4.2 Kernel ( compiled by myself or the one from the SuSE CD) the VGA mode is wrong ( 640*480). I tried to use the More Kernel argument option on BootX Version 1.2b3 "vga=extended" but there is no reaction. Does anybody have an idea how to set the video mode in the kernel? I somehow got stuck with the SAX2 programm. I dont know if this is the right aproach. Thanks for your help. Alfred Mutscheller(a)T-online.de

Patch to fix support for PNIC_II in tulip driver

Hi, Attached is the patch that fixes support for the Lite-On PNIC_II for the tulip driver on my machine for kernels 2.4.X. So if you are using a NIC that includes the Lite-ON PNIC_II (LC82C115) please give this a try. This includes some AsanteFast 10/100 cards that run under both Mac OSX and PPC Linux. Specifically the AsanteFast 10/100 with Part Number: 61-20590-01 uses this chip and this is the card all testing was done for. Special thanks to Jeff Garzik for answering some questions and providing the PNIC_II datasheet and the datasheet of the Intel/DEC 21143 which it is similar to. Without those docs, I would have been lost for sure. NOTE: This patch is just being submitted with this e-mail and therefore has *NOT* yet been accepted by Jeff (the official tulip driver maintainer) but it works fine for me and hopefully for others who are having troubles with some AsanteFast 10/100 NIC cards. XFree86 4.1.0 update

Hi, I installed the XFree86 4.1.0 from the RPMs I got from ftp.suse.com. The upgrade is OK, but when I run XFree86 -configure I get a lot of "unresolved symbols" (see attached output). The system is a G4/733MHz with kernel 2.4.12 (compiled with the .config from the SuSE 2.4.2 kernel). The graphics card is the original NVidia card that comes with the computer (I am working to get a supported ATI card). Thanks for any help, S. Schapiro PS: The install went without problems after I circumvented some yast bugs (PC-fdisk instead of pdisk ...) and manually installed yaboot. PPS: It's a pity SuSE doesn't list this computer as supported (without graphics card) since it works all very well (and the 2.4.12 kernel does recognize the NIC unlike the 2.4.2 kernel). linux 7.0 hangs on shutdown.

Hi all, occasionally when I shutdown linux the halt process hangs right after the "turning off swap" message appears.. the process just stops there with a blinking cursor. This does not happen all the time though I can't see any particular pattern occuring. keyboard mapping (newbie)

OK, got 7.1 all installed, but with one thing I cannot solve: how on earth do I get the keys to map correctly? Macintosh Manager

Hi, While messing around in OS9 I found a function called Macintosh Manager in the Multiple Users section. It seems that this can link the workstation to a "Domain Controller (Sorry NT Speak)" and able to authenticate to it It also seems that the only way use this is with Appleshare IP or OS X Server, can this be emulated with Linux, or even running OS 9? Remote access to man pages

Hi, My SuSE box is 192.168.1.99 on the LAN, and I can access its documentation from other machines by doing, e.g., http://192.168.1.99/hilfe/noframes/index_e.html http://192.168.1.99/cgi-bin/info2html?(bash)Top (For some reason only the /noframes/ version will come across.) However I can't seem to get the html-ized man pages that way -- for example, this won't work: http://192.168.1.99:6711/man?=bash&=1 Is there a simple change I can make in order to gain access? hysterion

Xfree86 4.1

Hi, I build and installed the 2.4.12 kernel on my feb 2001 iMac. my modem is working now. I also build Xfree86-drm for ATI rage 128 but that crashes with a signal 11. I found however on the Suse ftp site Xfree86 4.1 pre-compiled. What version do I need to download, and will it support the Rage 128 ultra? thanks, Jaap-Jan

Need help to get MACE and D-Link DFE-530TX+ working (Suse 7.1)

I have been struggling too long on this. I have an Apple PowerPC 8550 Workgroup Server (604 processor - beige case). The (built-in to kernel?) MACE driver for the onboard ethernet works under 2.2.18, and that's all. It doesn't seem to be in the standard 2.4.2 kernel?? I can't get a driver to work for the D-Link with either 2.2.18 or 2.4.2. I have downloaded software drivers directly from D-Link as well as tried to use the latest drivers from sylid or whatever. I just want to get this box up and use it for some simple firewall/ masquerading. Sheeh!! Please help. Thanks in advance, Stephen Beck

KDE 2.2.1 Update for Linux 7.1

Hello, I have updated my KDE Version from KDE 2 (standard version from 7.1) to KDE 2.2.1 (locate on Suse server). I am using the standard kernel version 2.4.2 on a G3 Powerbook wallstreet (233Mhz). Now I have the following problems: - There is no way to configure the login screen with console mode. So it isnt possible to start YaST without KDE. - When I start some of the information programs like memory in the KDE Control center, I will get the following failure There was an error loading the module: The diagnostics is: undefined symbol: __cmpdi2 - eMail Kmail works, Kdevelop 2.0 works, Web works, sound works Some hints ? richard

I have created a 30Mb HFS partition to be used as boot partition, but the SuSE installer didn't right any files there. How can I install the fake System Folder on that partition? I will have a look at your website. I've installed SuSE Linux 7.1 on my Firewire PowerBook G3 and it run fine right after the installation. However, the next time I restarted the computer, it booted straight into MacOS X, without me pressing any key on the keyboard. How can I boot into Linux now? And how can I fix yaboot/LILO so that I can choose between systems on boot time? Thanks Pedro

Thanks for the help in matter of the mouse simulation to christoph, gabriel, philipp and jerry. It works fine and now I can use suse with the full power. But I would like to use the "fn" key of the keyboard for the seconds mouse button(modify the rc.config ). How can i get the key code of this key (any tool). richard

Hello, I've been dealing with two problems yesterday when i tried to configure a dual boot on my new iMac. - I've tried to configure Yaboot and os-chooser for dual boot. But when launched the apple scripts of the suseboot folder, applescript returned the following mesage [... can't read "event earsffdr"]. - When i tried to reboot on the hfs /boot partition, i had a blank screen (fortunately it is not a blue one) whith the following message from OpenFirmware (i guess) : [ DEFAULT CATCH!, code=fffffff6 at %SRR0:ff80 amethod; ihandle=ffbc38c0 phandle=0_ ]. KMail does not work on (suse)linux/ppc

Hi! As I remember some time ago, there was a discussion, that kmail from KDE2.2 didn't work an SuSE for PowerPC. As this wasn't fixed in KDE 2.2.1 I have filed a bugreport to the KDE project. However they seem not to be very cooperative. So I would like to know if I am the only one with this problems, if there is a easy workaround, and if someone from SuSE could look into this. Help - Preserving disk data during installation

I have purchased a copy of SuSE Linux 7.1 PPC edition just a few days ago and I need help regarding the system's installation. My system is an Apple Powerbook G3 (Pismo series, the one with Firewire and DVD). The hard disk is partitioned as follows: Total capacity: 16Gb 1st Partition: MacOS X (HFS+) 10Gb 2nd Partition: MacOS 9 (HFS+) 3Gb Free space on disk: 3Gb I was planing to install SuSE Linux on the 3Gb free space at the end of the hard disk, but I couldn't find any instruction on the manual that would allow me to do so without losing all data on the other two partitions. Is it possible to re-partition the free space on the disk onto the three partitions required by SuSE Linux? Please advise on how this can be done. Qt compile errors

Hi, I've been trying to compile some applications for KDE2, and whenever I do, I inevitably get the following error at the ./configure step: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 2.2.2) (libraries) not found. Please check your installation! I *do* have Qt though, and even the right version. FWIW, I'm running PPC 7.2, with the newest KDE 2.2.1 RPMs from the SuSE FTP site. Does SuSE put them in some non-standard place? If so, can I resolve the problem with sym links? Linux on Daystar Genesis - Quad processor SUCCESS!

Hi, I've had some luck with linux ppc running on my Daystar Genesis - quad 225 (604e's). I'm currently running SuSE 7.1 with one of Dan Burcaw's 2.4.8smp variants. I've experimented with several, including the default 2.4.2smp and have instability in all, including my current setup. What I'm looking for is a rock solid setup. The kernel doesn't have to be the latest, but I don't want to get any kernel panics. I'm not tied to one distro or another, but if anyone has had luck running SMP on old-world 9500ish boxes, please let me know. A big thanks to Dan and all the other developers working to support the linux on ppc users out there. -George
