[opensuse-marketing] some organisation around etherpad

Hello, I must admit the first time I was asked to use etherpad my first movement was to don't like it. But after some use, it seems so well fitted for our work (collaborative writing of small documents), that my mind completely changed. However I'm worried to have documents spread randomly and to have early versions accessible with google. So I think we should use a "professional" ietherpad account (as far as I understand it's free) - any of us - and use some sort of tree organisation. for example a starting point as ietherpad.com/opensuse-marketting with a summary of the other page (table of contents) and for example, a page ietherpad.com/opensuse-marketting-flyerv4 for the flyer in discussion I think once a page is openned it's possible to have several administrators. I think also that we can accept any volunteer to connect on this etherpad, my only concern being google (or other indexing system). James, Before I realised you had already done all the hard work, I spoke to henne about the possibility of something like this. http://pad.opensuse.org was the subdomain I was bouncing around for the idea when I was talking about it in IRC. His reply was along the lines of "if you package it, then we can have a VM for it" I then tried packaging Node.js and my head exploded...and then I got busy with oSC and everything after it :) As you've practically already packaged it with your Gallery image, I guess we can speak to henne and see if something like pad.opensuse.org is possible. There's an image on SUSE Gallery[1] that runs fine in as little as 360MB RAM, and instances have been running internally at SUSE for over a month without any issues. I *strongly* recommend we bring up our own etherpad-lite server somewhere ( http://pad.opensuse.org ? ), and stop cluttering around everywhere else. I just wanted to add, that months ago I tried to bring up some discussion about vision and theme and was told 'don't talk about it, just do it'. So the conversation more or less ended, and I didn't really follow any further discussion due to other commitments in the meantime. Now someone has "just done it" and put time and effort into create nice artwork, and NOW you all want to add criticisms and say you don't like this or that. This is quite absurd. There needs to be a clear artwork vision discussed well before release, outlines put forward of the look and theme that is wanted for the distribution/release, a list of what specific artworks are required. THAT is when everyone can air their views. At this point of the process it should be minor tweaks and ajustments. But THAT would have required a DISCUSSION not 'just do it'. There is a difference between bikeshedding and planning. The project needs to consult with the creative members of the team and appoint an art team leader who has a clue about what is required for the components of the release, and then TRUST THEIR JUDGEMENT to guide the artwork production. Hello my friends, After Berlin, I was thinking something for Greek community but maybe it's better to go global. Well, the guy at his talk said that we must take feedback from the end users since developers just create their software without asking the needs of the end user. Since the meaning of selling isn't that the seller convienced the buyer but the seller covered buyer's needs, I was thinking to create a form that we can print and have with us at the events (simple paper). Some questions about our product or some general questions about GNU/Linux (replies yes/no). Hi all, I participated in a Software Freedom Day[1] event on Saturday, held at the City University of Hong Kong[2], at which Hong Kong Linux Users' Group[3] were one of the primary organisers. I plan to write a detailed report and will post it and the photos as soon as I get some time. Meanwhile, some basic data for starters: Turnout: Over 100 Topics covered at talks: MeeGo, Java, 3D modelling hardware(Reprap), free drivers, Python, etc Distros present : Mainly Debian, some Ubuntu, a fedora guy, 2 redhat guys, a couple of Meego people, and myself(openSUSE). Projects present(non-distro): Mozilla, GNU(saw no people, only goodies), Creative Commons, Java, Python, GNOME. DVDs distributed: 50 promo DVDs, 20 Li-f-e DVDs, 5 KDE Live CDs, 10 downloaded DVDs, 5 copied ISOs off my laptop. (Unfortunately, I had too few DVDs, and demand was quite appreciable) I mostly distributed a copy of [4] with the DVDs, mainly because most seemed to be non-beginners, and potential contributors even in the short term. It would probably have been better if some goodies/sticker could be arranged, but I was not sure if I could attend. [opensuse-marketing] Software Freedom Day, Florina, Greece-->Report

Hello friends, I'm so happy about what I did in Florina. Although I moved about 3 hours from home for this event, I did great. First of all, here is the link. http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2011/Greece/Florina/SDF%20Florina I was the organizer of the event with the help of the local team of computer school teachers. I went there in the morning and met my friend who is neurologist and he introduced the medical open source world. Unfortunately he couldn't stay. He can help us with the medical project. Then I met with the elementary school teacher and setup the place. We were at the city center. What I did there: 1. Inform people about open source. Although I had all distros, I was promoting the Green DVDs ;-) 2. Lot of local media came for the event. I was interviewed by 2 of them (video) and other 3 were newspapers and some other web sites. 3. A journalist, invited me for further tv interview (I'm waiting for her call). She also invited the community to present open source to a school. Maybe we can make an install fest, if they want us. So we also wait for a call for that. 4. I gave some promo materials to a local LUG and also to a member of our community who wants to organize a Linux Team at his university (it's near Florina). Unfortunately the last bus back to my city was early that day and didn't stay longer. Hello friends, The period that all openSUSE community was in Nurnberg, I organized our presence at the 76th International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki. You can find the report http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:76TIF Some points: 1. There were only 300pcs of DVDs. There were not enough. Kostas was in Nurnberg and I couldn't get more (if Kostas has more). 2. Personally I had to cover 80% of the schedule of the Fair. I had to organize SFD as Greek openSUSE community in Florina (it's 2.5-3 hours by bus). I also organized the SFD in Thessaloniki and I've contacted a opensource blog to for an interview about openSUSE, SFD and our presence there. At the end of the event, me and Kostas were interviewed about openSUSE and community by Linux Inside, maybe the only Linux magazine in Greece. We're waiting next issue. 3. I met lot of people that they said their first distro was SUSE and they bought it with the manual. That's why I tried to create the form to learn from them the reason they left. 4. I made a contact with 2 major mobile companies in Greece and with 2 journalists. 5. For those of you who know about what Carlos and Kostas did in LA marketing hackfest, I did it with more than 20 neighbor booths. People-business owners liked that and the positives of open source software. 6. I didn't have feedback from our community to contact the organizer of computer exhibitions in Cyprus to join their organization, so I didn't contact him. The same thing happened with another one in Kavala, city near us. 7. The only negatives (for me) were that I didn't join the conference and although our universities are closed because of riots against new educational system, my university opened for a week but I couldn't take the test because I was attending the event at the Trade Fair. Lame. Anyway, That's all. I must write something also in Greek. Have a lot of fun. Hey all! Sorry for the late response, long travelling hours and still trying to get settled :) I am really happy that we already have people replying, giving ideas and ready to help out. As this is a totally new idea we highly value opinions and ideas. @Chuck: Technical articles like that are certainly useful. Please let me know with which article you would like to begin! - Regarding tips&tricks this is also great for weekly news and at the same time maybe we can find useful tips/tricks in older weekly news issues and use them all together - some of them are not too long articles and the subject is definitely interesting. Do you think you could take this up on you as well and prepare something for a tips&tricks section of the magazine? @Kim: People's view is very important and I believe would also personalize the magazine. So I would say go for it! Clarification: when you say documentary, are you thinking video or written interview - because documentary brings video in my mind but we need articles/writing. So how are you thinking of beginning this? @piyoosh: Yep, it will definitely *not* include just events. It will certainly have a large variety of topics related to openSUSE, that's why we need ideas from all of you. @Elson: sure, help and motivation for new users I believe is always something we want, right? Step-by-step tutorials, tips&tricks for users are all very useful things. Do you have something specific in mind? Could you prepare a relevant article? Or do we have any interesting articles already written which we could perhaps edit if needed and use? @Mike: perfect, if you want to write something please feel free to do so, otherwise as soon as we organize all the ideas we could make some proposals on subjects that need articles and you can choose, what do you think? @Tanmaya: Absolutely, release related articles are generally needed, so yes, please get right to it. I assume you could write something about 12.1 release? @Peter: Success stories are always something positive and we definitely want positiveness in our magazine, right? Do you have something specific in mind you could put in writing? I would like to point out that it is amazing how many nice ideas we got and I really hope we can see some articles as well soon. Many articles could also be used immediately and be issued in weekly news or news.opensuse.org and when time comes of course to our magazine! As we still have not concluded regarding the exact structure of the magazine we don't really know exactly how many articles we will need for each subject etc. It could be the case that we might need not to use some articles, *but* this should not discourage absolutely anyone from writing because we will surely use your article one way or the other! The first step for the magazine is to get some context for it - your articles that is :) We will have a variety of subjects, from technical to simple things for newbies and we will focus on communities, individuals as well as events that have taken place. Maybe this is also a good chance for ambassadors to send something like a review regarding events that took place in their city/country? What do ambassadors think about that? We are still open for ideas and with Prashanth we will be processing all that info really soon (plz give us a couple of days as we just got back from Germany) and we will put everything together so that everyone knows where we stand on subjects. In the meantime, we are looking forward to receiving your articles and if you need any kind of clarification or assistance please let us know. I believe it'd be a good idea to not just include events, but some tutorials/troubleshooters as well. In such a case, the magazine can be more attractive to the new/novice openSUSE/Linux users. Hi all, Bernhard Wiedemann came up with the idea to organize a pizza party around the beta release of openSUSE. For those who don't know yet, the next milestone for openSUSE 12.1 (number 6) will be renamed Beta! So, maybe some of you want to organize a party too... I was tasked with surveying the news group to find some recommendations for improvements. To that end, I created a survey and sent it out to the mailing list. To date, I've only received 4 responses, and in fact all of those were received in the first 24 hours. (The six month delay is purely my own procrastination). The respondees were (in order of receipt) Henne Vogelsang, Andreas Jaeger, Bryen Yunashko, and Manu Gupta.
