Hi, We are going to host a Linux (Conference) Day at chameleon.org.il which is going to be operated on a Video Conference System. we would really like to host one or two lectures about open suse by foreign open suse members (in english of course). We thought about bringing to the local audience some of the topics which were exhibited in the last open SUSE conference during the Linux tag in Berlin. but you can choose any other topic related to open SUSE. I would be glad if anyone (or more) would agree to participate it. It going to take place at 7/8/09 (starting 9:00 - Israel local time). Any help is valuable. [opensuse-marketing] AICA Yearly Congress - Rome (Italy)

Hi all. This is my first attempt to organize events as an Ambassador. First of all, I know that the available time is probably not enough, so this attempt will probably fail, but at least I would like to try. AICA (www.aicanet.it) is an Italian no-profit Association for the promotion of IT, Automated Computing and IT skills development, and have their local offices within Universities R&D offices. Composed of IT Companies, IT Professionals and Computer Science Universities and High Schools, they collaborate with Universities, High Schools, Government institutions, R&D organizations, public offices, etc.. They organize events, R&D projects, education activities, and collaborate with http://www.eucip.com and http://www.ecdl.com. They also promote innovation in skill building, like using Open Source based Operating Systems and Office Automation as for the basic certification paths. The most important event they hold, is a yearly Congress that is hold, for this year, on November the 4th, 5th and 6th at the Rome based University 'La Sapienza'. This is NOT an Open Source event, but a general IT and Innovation event, so participants will be coming from different 'environments'. There is a call for paper expiring on July the 15th with various arguments to be proposed (http://aica2009.sapienza.roma.it/). Again, I understand that the available time is probably not enouhg, so I'm just trying... I have set in my mind a list of activities I will have to do from now on, but there is one of these for which I'm asking for help from the marketing ML: the document to be submitted as the first draft to the call for paper. The document should be in PDF or RTF format, either in English or Italian, and is to be developed based on one of the agenda items. If the document will be chosen, I will have to generate the final version and present the content with a projected presentation (I would take care of them), and the document itself will be distributed to the participants as an act of congress. I'm thinking to propose 2 of the items, but for one of them I will take care of submitting the proposal (I will let you all know about this in the next few days). The argument for which I'm asking help is 'Governance of Open Source Communities'. I was thinking to submit a document with this type of content: - What is Open Source, what is an Open Source Community (i.e. their objectives, their usual way to act, etc.) - What is openSUSE (brief history, from its birth date, through Novell acquisition, up to the state of today). - Characteristics of the openSUSE distro (YaST, OpenOffice Novell edition?, etc.) - What is the model: openSUSE community, Novell development addition up to the SLES and SLED enterprise offerings. - How is the openSUSE community organized (i.e. Community Manager, various tematic teams, wikis, Ambassadors, OBS, suse studio, Guiding Principles, etc.). - Numbers of openSUSE (number of registered users, members, downloads, visitors, IRC groups/users, etc.). - ... The document has to be generated based on provided guidance (http://aica2009.sapienza.roma.it/istruzioni-per-gli-autori). Here is a digest: - A4 format - Single Interline - Font: 12pt - First page to contain: Document Title, Autor[s], Abstract (Font: 10pt) - Up to 10 pages, with tables and pictures as well, and PDF or RTF format - Content pages with all lines used (font: 12pt, single interline) - Bibliography at the end with: 1. Author[s], 2. Date/Period, 3. Title (Italic font), 4. publisher. - Tables and pictures can be used but consider that it will be printed on B5 format. Do not use colors for pictures. - If you will use formulas, use the standard SYMBOLS. This means that the document should be ready within July the 14th (Tuesday) for me to be submitted. If there is anybody that can help me, even if by sharing previously used documents that have to be just reviewed (in that case, I would take care of doing it). Any questions, let me know. Good morning all. I'm working with a couple of local LUGs and associations to setup some [almost] free-of-charge linux classes starting from september. I was thinking (obviously) to develop the classes on openSUSE, and to give a 'gift' to attendees by providing them the DVDs with openSUSE and another with various documents/links, some of these taken from http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse111/ One thing that I will need to develop as well is the presentation to be projected during the class. Before to do 'duplicated' work, is there anybody that has made something similar already that wants to share to be re-used/adapted to the need? The plan is to make a 'fundamentals' class, an intermediate class (for users with some desktop experience), and a brief server class. I'll take care anyway to share the final document (whatever will be it's source). Hello Mates, Since a few weeks our survey in the Forums is running In the last Issue i've motivated the Readers to tell us, what they want. Here is the first result: - Chuck: Ambassador Events included in upcoming events - PBleser: Find Interesting for Users who are reading regularly the Mailinglists and planetsuse. - yamaban: 1. A newsflash-category: just short comments {160char? } with (outside-)links to news around Linux, kernel, and apps. Not necessarily bound to openSUSE, a view beyond the soup-dish would be welcome. 2. A version-update-category: short comments on the type of program and changes in the new version, links to further info and 1-click-installs 3. A event-category: what events are newly announced? outside-links to further Info an the upcoming events. Comments on done events, outside- links to further comments/info 4. Make it a point/portal for the users weekly news-fix without the need to subscribe to around 20 or so feeds and another 15 or more mailing lists. -Hylton Conacher: As a user of the OpenSuSE distribution, I would like to see more about repository updates when software is updated ie FireFox was recently patched to 3.5.1 however the version on my system is 3.0.0.11 and I have requested the system several times to check for updates via the opensuse updater applet. Always have an entry to where users can find tutorials specific to OpenSuSE. Whilst I have been using OpenSuSe since version 10.0, I still could not explain to someone what or how a software repository is or works. Does one need to be added for each software app installed, if available, and are the newer versions confirmed to work with OpenSuSe? If they need testing first then the time between update release and the update of the opensuse update mirror needs to be improved. PBlesers Wish i've realized through adding Linux.com, digg and wordpress to the Sources. And i've connected me to Community Manager from other Projects (like Lydia Pintscher) to write articles exclusivly for the openSUSE Weekly News. The Education Project write us an article too. [opensuse-marketing] Wiki functionality

Hi. I don't know if this is the right forum(list) for this but i will try anyway. I recently signed up for the ambassador program and have started to translate pages into Swedish. I recently translated a page on the wiki called Openssh from English and so far so god, then i discovered another page with information regarding openssh with the name OpenSSH and it contained different information. This is not good that it's possible to create multiple pages for same software just by just changing a letter in the word to uppercase/lowercase, even if it is done unintentional. Is there a meaning with this or just default behavior of the wiki software? I think users can get confused if they do a search on the wiki and there are more than one page for same software with different information. I think that it will not aid in the quest to promote openSUSE to the masses with this feature on the wiki, if it is indeed a feature on the wiki. I know that i first missed the second link since the first link i found was the one i translated from.
