Ilya, Robert:
KDE3 Looks really, really good in 11.4. Two issues have surfaced:
(1) kcontrol is empty :(
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/kcontrol-empty.jpg
(kcmshell.kcrash included at the end, below)
I also have a kcontrol.kcrash from trying to select kthememanager->icons
(2) The konqueror sftp://host:port/path/to/file syntax doesn't work in 11.4. I
just talked about this with Robert/all on the Trinity list and it appeared fixed
in 11.3. But in 11.4 it is broken again :(
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/konqueror/sftp-ssh-error.jpg
fish is OK:
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/konqueror/fish-ok.jpg
Also, why not bump konqueror -> settings -> Previews & Meta-Data -> Maximum file
size: 6M (3 is sort of small)
Let me know if I can send anything else.
Great Job Ilya!!

Hi people. I suggest you all to subscribe to opensuse-kde3(a)opensuse.org so I
could send e-mails directly to this mailing list.
I have several questions, suggestions and clarifications regarding status
of KDE:KDE3.
- First of all I have to announce that we completed for the most part moving
of packages from KDE:Communitry. It has been done much quicker than by
the KDE4 team. Some packages are not moved because they have problems either
with build or during runtime. Some packages like ksquirrel have well-known
security issues. I do not know should we include them in KDE:KDE3 or not.
- It seems that some packages were disabled for Factory. Namely,
kdemultimedia3 and anything related to Beagle. Please tell me the actual
reason or the disabling. I can add to KDE:KDE3 repository any libraries
needed for the build. For example, I can restore kdemultimedi3. Or are there
any other reasons for the disabling? Beagle in particular is essential for
finding topics in KDE help system.
- I am planning to add some soft dependencies to some basic KDE packages
to improve user's experience. For example, it would be good in my view if
kdebase3-workplace recommended kde3-knemo and desktoptext-config.
Also some plugins may be recommended. Please tell me if this is against
OpenSUSE packaging policy.
- I have long-range plans to include Qt3-based versions of Yast2, VirtualBox
and Firefox. If somebody has experience in compiling Firefox for Qt3, any
help welcome.
- OpenSUSE maintainers, what's your opinion about possibility
to include KDE3 option to OpenSUSE? The basic part of KDE3 (including kicker,
konq, ksysguard, kcontrol) is already included (to be precise, it was never
removed from OpenSUSE), but the ability to logon on KDE3 is disabled.
The status of KDE3 repository has improved considerably in recent times,
so it may look reasonable to reconsider KDE3's status. To enable a user to
install KDE3 on his system we need to include only a tiny package
kdebase3-session which takes only 4 kb, this package includes the .desktop
file for the session manager so the user could choose KDE3 on the logon
screen.
- Besides this one can consider including KDE:KDE3 repository in the list
of community repositories along with the Education repo etc so a user could
be able to install the full version of KDE3 from the community repo.
- Some KDE3 packages (koffice, pdfedit) currently experience problems
with building for Factory 32-bit architecture. This is not a KDE3 bug, but
an issue of brocken zlib in Factory, it was also observed on other
distributions. I have reported a bugreport:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634995

Support for KDE3 has been re-enabled in LibreOffice 3.3.2 in the
LibreOffice:Stable repository.
In addition to support for KDE3 styles, libreoffice-kde package now works
well, providing KDE3 file picker dialogs and address book in LibreOffice.

Hi guys.
Just got 11.4/KDE3 running on an old Compaq DL380 G2 server. It has
dual P3/1.4Ghz chips and 6GB RAM.
The video is a Rage XL 8MB on board.
Running KDE3, the desktop is EXTREMELY slow. I don't see a module
loaded for it. I doubt the ATI repo has any drivers for something
this old, and without the good old SaX2, I'm kinda stumped on how to
fix this.
Any ideas?
Thanx

Those of you who has problems with kcontrol can now try another tool that
provides a similar functionality - systemsettings-kde3. Just install this
package and find it in the menu.

Ilya, All,
I thought we had solved this in 11.3, but it appears to be back in 11.4.
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/sftp-error.jpg
konqueror cannot access sftp location with ssh on a non-standard port using:
sftp://user@host:port/dir1/dir2
fish to the same location works fine. This first appeared about a year ago and I
have posted it earlier under the subject:
"[opensuse-kde3] sftp url parsing (with included port) broken in 11.3 kde3 -
fish OK - howto work around?"
and on the trinity list:
"[trinity-devel] konqueror sftp:// URL handling broken with openssh >= 5.6 (open
a bug?)"
After the trinity post, I tried again on 11.3 and it seemed to work, but now in
11.4 it is broken again. Regression?

I use KDE3 on 32 bit 11.2. I just did zypper dup yet again, which seems
required more than weekly for many weeks now.
Every login is accompanied by the login sound being cut short, and the
KNotify window opening and reporting useless backtrace & "system
configuration startup check disabled". What needs to be done to make this not
happen any more?
http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/Xorg/xsession-errors is fresh on this young
login only.

I have quite a number of systems with various release versions and Factory
installed, but the one I keep up 24/7 is running Apache and KDE3 on 11.2.
It seems impossible to do zypper lu less frequently than once a day and not
see any KDE3 packages available even if installing them each time any are
found to be available. It seems as though KDE3 must be being rebuilt
continuously for that to happen. Why is this the situation?
How often should KDE3 updates be installed?
Should logout/login to KDE be performed each time updates are installed?
Is there any benefit other than convenience to logging out, doing zypper dup
or zypper up, then logging in instead of using the online updater?
I try to keep SeaMonkey open for 3 weeks or more at a time. How does this
affect the answers?
I looked on http://en.opensuse.org/KDE3, but found no answers or pointers
thereto. Is there somewhere else anyone here knows about where this has been
explained?

Guys,
Every once in a while I run across a good gtk theme that I like to use in
my kde3 installs. Since I have a dark charcoal/blue theme on 11.4,
BlueNight-II by Lars (LaGaDesk on deviantart) works great.
Screenshot:
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/ss/
The theme is:
http://lagadesk.deviantart.com/art/LaGaDesk-BlueNight-GTK-1-0-1-153675007?q…
That way gimp, thunderbird, etc.. look good on kde3. Just use GTK Styles
and Fonts to select it after you install it. To install it, just unzip it to
/usr/share/themes to make it available for all users or ~/.themes to only make
it available for yourself.
Until kcontrol is fixed, just use:
kcmshell /opt/kde3/share/applications/kcmgtk.desktop
to configure the gtk theme in kde3.
