Hi people. I suggest you all to subscribe to opensuse-kde3(a)opensuse.org so I
could send e-mails directly to this mailing list.
I have several questions, suggestions and clarifications regarding status
of KDE:KDE3.
- First of all I have to announce that we completed for the most part moving
of packages from KDE:Communitry. It has been done much quicker than by
the KDE4 team. Some packages are not moved because they have problems either
with build or during runtime. Some packages like ksquirrel have well-known
security issues. I do not know should we include them in KDE:KDE3 or not.
- It seems that some packages were disabled for Factory. Namely,
kdemultimedia3 and anything related to Beagle. Please tell me the actual
reason or the disabling. I can add to KDE:KDE3 repository any libraries
needed for the build. For example, I can restore kdemultimedi3. Or are there
any other reasons for the disabling? Beagle in particular is essential for
finding topics in KDE help system.
- I am planning to add some soft dependencies to some basic KDE packages
to improve user's experience. For example, it would be good in my view if
kdebase3-workplace recommended kde3-knemo and desktoptext-config.
Also some plugins may be recommended. Please tell me if this is against
OpenSUSE packaging policy.
- I have long-range plans to include Qt3-based versions of Yast2, VirtualBox
and Firefox. If somebody has experience in compiling Firefox for Qt3, any
help welcome.
- OpenSUSE maintainers, what's your opinion about possibility
to include KDE3 option to OpenSUSE? The basic part of KDE3 (including kicker,
konq, ksysguard, kcontrol) is already included (to be precise, it was never
removed from OpenSUSE), but the ability to logon on KDE3 is disabled.
The status of KDE3 repository has improved considerably in recent times,
so it may look reasonable to reconsider KDE3's status. To enable a user to
install KDE3 on his system we need to include only a tiny package
kdebase3-session which takes only 4 kb, this package includes the .desktop
file for the session manager so the user could choose KDE3 on the logon
screen.
- Besides this one can consider including KDE:KDE3 repository in the list
of community repositories along with the Education repo etc so a user could
be able to install the full version of KDE3 from the community repo.
- Some KDE3 packages (koffice, pdfedit) currently experience problems
with building for Factory 32-bit architecture. This is not a KDE3 bug, but
an issue of brocken zlib in Factory, it was also observed on other
distributions. I have reported a bugreport:

I use KDE3 on 32 bit 11.2. I just did zypper dup yet again, which seems
required more than weekly for many weeks now.
Every login is accompanied by the login sound being cut short, and the
KNotify window opening and reporting useless backtrace & "system
configuration startup check disabled". What needs to be done to make this not
happen any more?

Hello SuSE people,
Bought me a nice new Logitech H530 usb headset andc plugged it in.
Doesn't "just work". Opened Yast > Sound. Yast saw it, configured it and
played a test sound. Nada, Won't work in any app including system sounds,
Alsaconf made things worse by shutting down my sound chip and I had to
reconfigure it.
Google was no help. Does this need a kernel module ? a driver?
Can't figure out how to make this thing work, neither in KDE3 nor KDE4,
Can somebody please point me in the right direction?

Compiz is now working well with KDE3. Compiz with KDE3 windows decorator
enabled is added to KDE3 repository. It has the same version as Compiz in
OpenSUSE 11.3 so under this release you only have to install compiz-kde3
package in addition to the compiz from the main repo. The settings will be
the same under KDE3, Gnome and KDE4.
To easily enable and manage Compiz I suggest to install fusion-icon package
which is available in private repos in OBS.

Ilya, All,
The Trinity source will not build with gcc >= 4.5. See:
http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=47723
The open question is whether it is gcc or Trinity that needs to be fixed. I
don't know which gcc 11.4 will use, but keep this in mind if it has 4.5 or later.

Robert, All
I was looking over the OBS project at
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=home%3Abravoall1552%3Atrini…
and wondered if there was a wiki or set of notes squirreled away that show what
had worked and what hadn't as far as the 11.3 and Factory builds? Right now I
don't have an an opensuse box for building, but when 11.4 is released, I'll dump
an 11.0 install and replace it with 11.4 or just setup a new VirtualBox install
of 11.4 for building.
Robert, do you have a public set of specs for the trinity packages that I
could get w/o having to go to each page of the OBS project and download them?
(it's easy enough to do, but if you have a ../specs directory somewhere, that
would be easiest) What I've done with Arch is just to collect all the PKGBUILDs
(the Arch spec file equivalent) into a single dir as a working copy for
development. e.g.:
18:50 alchemy:~/arch/tnotes> ls -1 pkgbuild/
meta
svn
PKGBUILD-arts
PKGBUILD-dbus-qt3
PKGBUILD-kdeaccessibility
PKGBUILD-kdebase
PKGBUILD-kdebindings
PKGBUILD-kdelibs
PKGBUILD-pykde3
PKGBUILD-pyqt3
PKGBUILD-qt3-trinity
PKGBUILD-tqtinterface
Do you have anything like that (spec-<module>?
It will take me a week or so to shift gears from pkgbuild to rpm and get back
up to speed on the spec format, but I figure if we can get Trinity building on
at least one of the two distros I use (SuSE/Arch), then we can probably figure
out how to get it going on the other. Thanks.

This is http://websvn.kde.org/?view=revision&revision=406411 a
personal commit by Aaron Seigo after which the buttons on the taskbar in KDE
3.4 ceased to be visually pushed, when using the Classic mode.
The key line in file kicker/taskbar/taskcontainer.cpp before:
style().drawPrimitive(QStyle::PE_HeaderSection, p, QRect(0, 0, width(),
height()), colors, sunken ? QStyle::Style_Down : QStyle::Style_Raised);
after:
style().drawPrimitive(QStyle::PE_HeaderSection, p, QRect(0, 0, width(),
height()), colors)
After reverting this change and restoring the removed parameter to the
function the taskbar works well again.
The fixed packages will be available in KDE:KDE3 repository as soon as the
repo rebuilds.
