Hi!
I am about to install openSUSE 12.1 on a laptop. I want to use it mainly
(or entirely) with the KDE3 desktop but I still want to be able to run
KDE4 applications under KDE3. In the past, I have done this with openSUSE
11.3 and 11.4. During installation of 11.3 and 11.4, I selected KDE4 as
the default desktop. Then I added the KDE:KDE3 repository and installed
all the packages to properly run KDE3 following more or less the
recommendations given here:
HOW-TO: KDE 3.5 on 11.4
This has worked perfectly and I was even able to use the oxygen theme in
KDE3. For example, okular and vlc came with the nice oxygen theme even
when running under KDE3.
My question is: Is this procedure going to work also with openSUSE 12.1 or
is there anything in particular I have to pay attention to?
Thanks!
Gianluca

In LibreOffice 3.6 support for KDE3's file picker dialogs has been fixed and works again.
You can install LibreOffice 3.6 from LibreOffice:Unstable repository.

I did a fresh HTTP minimal server 64 bit 12.2 install this AM. After yast got
done with firstboot I set solver.onlyRequires=true, then did zypper in
kdebase3-session kdebase3-workspace kdebase3-kdm kdebase3-SuSE kdebase3-apps
kdebase3-runtime kdebase3-samba kdenetwork3-IRC kdeadmin3 kdeutils3. The
subject message was the result. What's the consequence(s)? Is it a bug that
needs fixing before GA?

Had an .iso download that I wanted to burn to a DVD. Used a RW disk that had
been previously recorded ... not recognised in KDE (i.e., no "what do you
want to do" prompt).
Booted Win7, ran imgburn and did a FULL erase/format on this disk and two
others. Then rebooted and in opensuse 12.1_32/kde3.5 none of these disks was
recognised by KDE 3.5. This is my production install which uses haldaemond,
the HAL-enabled KDE repo, and which generally reads all other dvds I use.
I booted into Mint13/XFCE that I have installed, and each of the disks is
readable/mounted properly there. Obviously Win7 also recognises them. Going
back into Win7 and running an info applet from DVDINFOPRO on the disk I got:

When the disk is inserted in my 12.1/kde3 install, no entries are placed in
the /var/log/messages file. When a "mount /dev/sr1 -t iso9660 /media"
command is given in a console, The error message on the console is:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
and the entry in /var/log/messages is:
Aug 26 13:14:09 s121k3prod su: (to root) root on /dev/pts/1
Aug 26 13:15:02 s121k3prod kernel: [ 935.148430] ISOFS: Unable to identify
CD-ROM format.
Combined with this problem I registered on the KDE3 user list:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde3/2012-07/msg00004.html
and this on Bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=771552
leads me to believe that there is a fundamental flaw in KDE 3.5 recognising
certain types of iso9660 formats on cd's, dvd's and on usb flash/thumb
drives.

Knetwork manager is able to connect the known wireless connections, but it is absolutely impossible to add a new connection. I have tried to add new WPA connections, but as well as I understand, it did not write the password correctly. The connection failed. When I tried to edit the connection the password became different from that I had inserted initially. So I needed remove the connection and to use nm-applet to add it again.

Here is the method (for KDE3. I love and use KDE3) using scripts :
1/ create a keyboard shorcut :
create a krunner.khotkeys file (as root) in /opt/kde3/share/apps/khotkeys
The content of the file is at the end of this email
2/ Here is the magical command to lauch the krunner (or minicli in kde3) :
create a file /usr/bin/krunner, since I didn't managed to create a khotkeys
shortcut with arguments :( Don't forget to make it executable.
#! /bin/sh
dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface popupExecuteCommand
3/ run (as NON root !) :
/opt/kde3/lib/kconf_update_bin/khotkeys_update --id krunner
It tells KDE3 to update shortcuts.
/opt/kde3/share/apps/khotkeys/krunner.khotkeys file :

Now if you press Ctrl+Alt+D, you should see the krunner window. Adapt it to
your needs.

Ilya,
Latest support in kbugbuster is bugzilla 2.17.1 that doesn't work anymore. Has
there been any work done to update this in kdesdk? TDE has the same problem. Do
you know of any patches?

All,
I'm looking for a patch for k9copy that updates the code to work with ffmpeg
0.11-1. Please let me know if you have one. If I have one first, I'll pass it
along. Thanks.

Have you got a script to compile KDE3 in one pass, 1 command ?
On documentation I have found, there is most of the time : "For each KDE
package"... http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/Historic/KDE_3.5
People here might have one script for compiling all.
Thank you.
