Hi!
I am about to install openSUSE 12.1 on a laptop. I want to use it mainly
(or entirely) with the KDE3 desktop but I still want to be able to run
KDE4 applications under KDE3. In the past, I have done this with openSUSE
11.3 and 11.4. During installation of 11.3 and 11.4, I selected KDE4 as
the default desktop. Then I added the KDE:KDE3 repository and installed
all the packages to properly run KDE3 following more or less the
recommendations given here:
HOW-TO: KDE 3.5 on 11.4
This has worked perfectly and I was even able to use the oxygen theme in
KDE3. For example, okular and vlc came with the nice oxygen theme even
when running under KDE3.
My question is: Is this procedure going to work also with openSUSE 12.1 or
is there anything in particular I have to pay attention to?
Thanks!
Gianluca

Ilya, All
Do you have a patch yet to fix the user session tracking problem in KDE3 in a
pure systemd environment (no ConsoleKit)? I'm trying to work out the problem of
TDE leaving kdeio_file/sftp/http processes running after the connection is
closed. This has to do with the freedesktop migration to systemd requirements
listed here:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/writing-display-managers/http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/writing-desktop-environmen…
Right now this is being work as TDE bug 1902 -
http://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1902
If you know of a patch that does this for kde3, please let me know. I have the
kde4 patch that implements a multi-seat solution, but the current approach is to
implement a single-seat fix, then work on the multi-seat solution.
The kde4 patch for this is in kde 4.11. The patch is named:
kde-workspace-4.11.1-kdm-logind-multiseat.patch
I don't have the url handy, but if you need it, I'll track it down. Let me
know. Thanks.

Actually, this appears to be a problem that has been an increasing pain
since I first ran across it in V12.1. The symptoms go a bit like this.
When I try to open the screensaver settings from the "Configure Desktop"
right-click option, the window opens for a couple of seconds, showing
"Loading..." in the screensaver selection area. It will then crash with
no visible error and take the entirety of the desktop with it. The only
fix I have to hand at that point is to restart the session.
If I try to do the same thing from the control centre, it does almost
exactly the same thing except that it doesn't take the desktop with it.
I suspect the fault is the same one but the fact that the screensaver
setup page is embedded in another program means that it doesn't get a
chance to kill the desktop.
I have now built KDE3 on openSUSE 13.1 four different times, both by
overlaying it on KDE4 or building it on a minimal X Window build, and I
have used different systems to do it on, though on each occasion this
has been on VirtualBox systems.
The only other clue I have to hand is that the kio_sysinfo slave comes
up with "Process for the sysinfo protocol died unexpectedly" error when
I try to use that (which is very annoying and, before anyone says it, NO
I do NOT want to use that overstuffed "infocenter" thing!)
Any clues?

Ilya, All,
I packaged WordNet as an extension for koffice/kthesaurus for TDE and built a
spec for openSuSE. (then Greg provided a link to the one in OBS -- bummer) The
spec I have includes the WordNet 3.1 database update to WordNet-3.0. The wordnet
rpm in OBS at:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/Education/wordnet/wordnet.spec…
If you want the 3.1 database update, you can add it from this spec:
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/openSUSE/pkg/wordnet.spec
The wordnet extension adds quite a bit to kthesaurus. It provides synonyms in
sentence context:
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/dt/trinity/ss/koffice-kthesaurus-wordnet.jpg
Useful tool, perhaps add it as an optional package for koffice. Keep up the
good work.

Ilya, Robert,
Where can I see the patches you are applying to kpowersave? There are a couple
of k(tde)powersave issues we are looking at on the trinity list and would like
to compare. Which build service project hold the current kde3 build?
