Yesterday I've updated to OpenSUSE 12.1 and now I am frustrated with a rather annoying problem. The icons under KDE3 often turn black or, sometime, transparent (or, at least, became black when I move the mouse to them on the panel). This often occurs spontaneously, but virtually every time I hibernate/resume the computer. Note that there is no such effect under XFCE (even for KDE3 applications).
Maybe this problem correlates with the fact that there is no bootsplash (splashy exits with an error) after the upgrade, but I am not sure.

Is there a possibility to enable the context menu entry "compress" in
konqueror?
kde3-ark is included, but the context menu is not active.
rpm versions : kdeutils3-3.5.10-97.5.x86_64
kdebase3-apps-3.5.10.1-266.1.x86_64 (HAL-enabled)
Thanks in advance

did some checking on installing kde3 on the latest factory suse, the 1
click install seems to point to a non-existent location and switching to
the obs shows disastrous results. is that the true state of the art re
kde3 in suse 12.2?
thanks ina dvance,

Ilya, All
I am trying to eliminate a file conflict in Trinity between tdesdk and tdesvn.
Both packages provide:
/opt/trinity/share/services/svn+file.protocol
/opt/trinity/share/services/svn+http.protocol
/opt/trinity/share/services/svn+https.protocol
/opt/trinity/share/services/svn+ssh.protocol
/opt/trinity/share/services/svn.protocol
However, the files provided by both packages are not entirely identical. The
files from tdesvn use 'exec=kio_ksvn' while tdesdk uses 'exec=kio_svn'. I don't
know what difference this makes or whether it even matters. I think they are
functionally equivalent, but I don't know.
Is anybody on list familiar with the kio_svn and kio_ksvn files and whether
there is any difference in the way they work? I would like to simply make a 3rd
package called tde-svnservices that holds the files and make that a dependency
of both tdesvn and tdesdk. But I don't know whether to use the files that use
kio_svn or kio_ksvn for the common package (or if it matters).
If anyone on the list has historical knowledge about the difference between
the two kios I would welcome your thoughts. Sorry for the slightly OT request.

After installing v12.1 I have been able to configure nearly everything I
want on the desktop, the exception being the SMTP configuration
in Kmail. I have given up trying to find the corruption that is
preventing Kmail from sending messages, although I am pretty sure
Akonadi is involved. My preferred solution at this point would be to
fall Kmail back to the version that was in KDE3.5, leaving the rest of
the KDE v4.7 as it is. Is this feasible? Are there people who have done
this, and can comment on pros and cons, and on how to go about it?
If that is not a desirable solution for any reason, Plan B would be to
replace the existing KDE 4.7 with KDE 3.5, presumably by the one-click
installation.
And, since it is still very early days for my oS 12.1 it would not be
too difficult or inconvenient to reinstall a clean 12.1 from scratch, if
that were advantageous.

Yesterday I did a 32 bit minimal server M2 install. After booting it a couple
of times I went about ad hoc addition of KDE3. After doing zypper in to
enough KDE3 packages that I thought startx should open KDE3[1], I found
virtually none of Xorg had been pulled. I also found that
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and windowmanager hadn't been touched by adding
KDE3 packages, which I changed from xdm & twm with MC to kdm & kde.
Once startx did get a KDE3 desktop up, most of what should have been in the
main starter menu was missing, system settings in particular. I noted this in
my installation success announcement post on the opensuse-factory list,
including log from KCrash handler. Thinking there must be some bug, I went
about doing unrelated things (nothing involving installing X related or KDE
related packages), exiting KDE3 and reopening it at least once.
Then in the process of doing other things I rebooted. On next KDE3 open, the
missing starter menu items were all there, and KDE3 as I need it all seems to
work, while nothing GTK or KDE4 that isn't a hard dep is littering the
installation or filling up my / partition. :-)
