Hi!
I am about to install openSUSE 12.1 on a laptop. I want to use it mainly
(or entirely) with the KDE3 desktop but I still want to be able to run
KDE4 applications under KDE3. In the past, I have done this with openSUSE
11.3 and 11.4. During installation of 11.3 and 11.4, I selected KDE4 as
the default desktop. Then I added the KDE:KDE3 repository and installed
all the packages to properly run KDE3 following more or less the
recommendations given here:
HOW-TO: KDE 3.5 on 11.4
This has worked perfectly and I was even able to use the oxygen theme in
KDE3. For example, okular and vlc came with the nice oxygen theme even
when running under KDE3.
My question is: Is this procedure going to work also with openSUSE 12.1 or
is there anything in particular I have to pay attention to?
Thanks!
Gianluca

sooo, it has been a while since I asked this question:
is it possible to use kde3 kmail in suse12.xx, without kmail constantly losing
track of previously downloaded mail from the server? this has been my
experience with *every* installation I have tried to date ; this has forced
me to other mail readers, but i still like the old kmail...
thanks,
d.

In spite of 1600x1200 as first listed mode in xrandr output, and first listed
mode in EDID modes list in Xorg.0.log, and 1600x1200 as PreferredMode in
xorg.conf, KDE is starting in 1152x864, the mode on cmdline which I put there
to cause the console framebuffers to use that mode. IOW, it won't start in
PreferredMode. To get there requires use of Krandrtray or xrandr. Is this a
new intentional behavior? It wasn't happening in prior 13.1 Intel
installations here.

my regular os is suse11.4 with kde3, but i have been testing 12.3 with kde3
for a while now, looks ok for now,
Also, even though i often try the latest kde4, i still prefer kde3 to da max:)
but i have one pet peave:
I store my digital pictures in plain folders and i manipulate them as I
please. The one thing that bothers me is that, when i point konq to one of
the folders with my pics, only a few of the "icons" have thumbprints of the
actual pics, most of the thumbprints have the generic jpg icon. Is it
possible to fix that?
thanks,
d.

Can anyone tell me of a way to make the File/Directory selector use Tree View
by default?

Forgot key point in prior post (to kernel list):
The KDE3 video corruption only happens on first session after booting.
Logging out and right back in brings up normal video. Five boots, five
corrupted sessions, five non-corrupted subsequent sessions, all from
"runlevel 3" via startx. From 5th corrupt session:
http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/SUSE/Factory/xsession-errors-gx260-os131m4-i845G.txt
Booting straight to KDM3 produces similarly corrupt video, but starting a
session from it produces normal video, which is inherited by KDM3 after
logging out.
> Both systems run 13.1M4/3.11.rc7 on i845G video.
