Hi people. I suggest you all to subscribe to opensuse-kde3(a)opensuse.org so I
could send e-mails directly to this mailing list.
I have several questions, suggestions and clarifications regarding status
of KDE:KDE3.
- First of all I have to announce that we completed for the most part moving
of packages from KDE:Communitry. It has been done much quicker than by
the KDE4 team. Some packages are not moved because they have problems either
with build or during runtime. Some packages like ksquirrel have well-known
security issues. I do not know should we include them in KDE:KDE3 or not.
- It seems that some packages were disabled for Factory. Namely,
kdemultimedia3 and anything related to Beagle. Please tell me the actual
reason or the disabling. I can add to KDE:KDE3 repository any libraries
needed for the build. For example, I can restore kdemultimedi3. Or are there
any other reasons for the disabling? Beagle in particular is essential for
finding topics in KDE help system.
- I am planning to add some soft dependencies to some basic KDE packages
to improve user's experience. For example, it would be good in my view if
kdebase3-workplace recommended kde3-knemo and desktoptext-config.
Also some plugins may be recommended. Please tell me if this is against
OpenSUSE packaging policy.
- I have long-range plans to include Qt3-based versions of Yast2, VirtualBox
and Firefox. If somebody has experience in compiling Firefox for Qt3, any
help welcome.
- OpenSUSE maintainers, what's your opinion about possibility
to include KDE3 option to OpenSUSE? The basic part of KDE3 (including kicker,
konq, ksysguard, kcontrol) is already included (to be precise, it was never
removed from OpenSUSE), but the ability to logon on KDE3 is disabled.
The status of KDE3 repository has improved considerably in recent times,
so it may look reasonable to reconsider KDE3's status. To enable a user to
install KDE3 on his system we need to include only a tiny package
kdebase3-session which takes only 4 kb, this package includes the .desktop
file for the session manager so the user could choose KDE3 on the logon
screen.
- Besides this one can consider including KDE:KDE3 repository in the list
of community repositories along with the Education repo etc so a user could
be able to install the full version of KDE3 from the community repo.
- Some KDE3 packages (koffice, pdfedit) currently experience problems
with building for Factory 32-bit architecture. This is not a KDE3 bug, but
an issue of brocken zlib in Factory, it was also observed on other
distributions. I have reported a bugreport:

From the "too tired to watch the nsplugin viewer crashing all day long" camp
Hi,
since $subject nagged me quite some time now, I crawled though the web and
found some hints, that may solve the issue. Backported them. Check out
home:frispete:KDE3/kdebase3 (when ready..)
and let me know about the outcome. I'm able to view
http://ti.arc.nasa.gov/destination/iss/flash/index.html
successfully ATM, BTW.
Enjoy,
Pete

I'm testing KDE3 on 11.3/x64 and I can't configure my screens. I have
a 19" 4x3 CRT and a 21.5" 16x9 LCD 1920x1080. Right now it clones
what I have on both.
When I click on display in configure desktop, it changes the
resolution from 1024x768 to what looks like 1280x1024.
I know that SaX2 has been depreciated. Is there a factory available
version I can use to make my system work?
Thanx

A new package autoq3d-ce-qt3 has been just added to KDE:KDE3. Thank very much
to Malcolm Lewis who patched it for the new GCC. Just note that Qt4-based
version is forgotten, lays in home:llunak:attic and disabled since nobody
bothers.

Greetings,
I wonder if there is any possibility of installing OpenSUSE 11.3 with KDE3?
Thank You

Hello:
I have a problem with gtk styles and font sizes in KDE 3.5.10
in openSUSE 11.2.
The gtk styles and font sizes are not consistent for different users
on my system even if the gtk style setup is the same in KDE control center.
I found that for different users the values for GTK2_RC_FILES are
not always the same. For example for test1 is:
~> echo $GTK2_RC_FILES
/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:/home/test1/.gtkrc-2.0-qtengine:/home/test1/.gtkrc-2.0:/home/test1/.kde/share/config/gtkrc-2.0
for user is:
~> echo $GTK2_RC_FILES
/home/user/.gtkrc-2.0-kde:/home/user/.gtkrc-2.0-qtengine:/home/lxuser/.gtkrc-2.0:/home/lxuser/.kde/share/config/gtkrc-2.0
When I set gtk style and font in KDE control center a
~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde file is created but is seems it is not
used.
Furthermore for the same user the style is different
(eg. window background color) depending on whether the
application is started in konsole or KDE application
runner (Alt+F2).
I have kde3-kcm_gtk-0.7svn20070827-21.2 installed. Earlier I had
kde3-gtk-qt-engine but curently it is not available in 11.2
KDE3 repos.
My questions are:
1. Which one of the above two is preferred or better?
2. How the GTK2_RC_FILES is set up?
3. How the gtk style and font size is determined in KDE 3.5?
I am very confused now how gtk style setup occurs in KDE
and I would like to understand it.
Thanks in advance,
Istvan

What is this package for and do we need it in KDE:KDE3?
It seems it is now brocken for OpenSUSE 11.3 but also it seems no
other package needs it.

This is a Qt3 front-end co call various Yast modules. The modules are still
Qt4-based. Please test it and tell me if you encounter any problems. Anlso it
does not include translations, if ypu know how to include them in the best
way, please share your ideas.
