Thanks to Sergei Amelian from the Trinity project we now have a temporary
hotfix to the crash problem.
Only a 64-bit build is currently available.
This package
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Ansus:/KDE3/KDE_KDE3_openSU…
should not crash in the icons module although the origin of the problem has
not been fixed yet and the icon preview module still will work incorrectly
for some themes.

Started my computer this a.m. and it booted my 11.3/kde3 partition as it
should, but dropped to the commandline rather than go through to the desktop.
Logging in and "startx" worked right off. Problem is repeatable, and booting
will not go through to the GUI without dropping to the commandline.
Tried it on the 11.4/kde3 that I had created a week ago (pure icewm install
for 11.4, then add kde3 repo), and the same thing happened. Yesterday both
were working fine.
Here are the pertinent lines in /var/log/warn's from these two systems
(Xorg.0.log is useless):
Mar 13 15:37:18 s113kde3 kdm[2373]: X server startup timeout, terminating
Mar 13 15:37:18 s113kde3 kdm[2373]: X server for display :0 can't be started,
session disabled
Mar 13 15:19:05 s114kde3 kdm[1904]: X server startup timeout, terminating
Mar 13 15:19:05 s114kde3 kdm[1904]: X server for display :0 can't be started,
session disabled
Two other opensuse partitions I have, with 11.4/kde4 (stock install from final
DVD), and 11.4/kde3 (this is the one I set up as a test yesterday, putting on
11.3/kde3 first, then upgrading to 11.4/kde3), go straight through to the GUI
as they should. BUT, they have the stock X video drivers.
The two non-performing partitions/systems have the ATI 11.2 proprietary
driver. As I said, everything was fine yesterday when I powered down, and I
haven't had a problem with the 11.3/kde3 partition that I use every day.
I'm tempted to put the ATI driver on the 11.4/kde3 system (the one I set up as
a test yesterday, since krandr doesn't retain settings) and see if it craps
out on boot too. Would a recent (up to yesterday) KDE3 update(s) have
affected this?

I have re-built LibreOffice with KDE3 support.
You can make use of it by adding the fiollowing repository:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Ansus:/branches:/LibreOffic…
This is a temporary location and will be moved elsewhere in the future.

Iiya, was it via upgradinging, or clean install? If the former, maybe
something carried over may make it work? I've now done about 6-7 clean
installs (Mx thru to RC2, no upgrades), and each time the two problems have
appeared. FYI, the list of installed packages resulting from the
fairly "pure" most recent x86_64 install is here:
http://burpnrun.blogspot.com/2011/03/35on114x64.html
If you want, I can do an item-by-item compare (the 3.5/11.4_x64 list at the
above website is 916 items, my 3.5/11.3_x86 production system will be a heck
of a lot larger). But does your observation/experience suggest (if upgrading
vs new install) that there's a file missing in my list which would make my
installs "automagically" work if included?

In my 11.4_x86/3.5 (from 11.4 repo) system I genned earlier this week,
I had subsequently installed LibreOffice. Works, no sweat! A x86 vs x86_64
thingy? One thing, I don't use OpenJDK but, rather, the latest Sun version
from the openSUSE repos.

Hmmm. I went into the 11.4_x86/3.5 (from 11.4 repo) system I genned earlier
this week. Changed from the default theme (which I believe
is "crystal-SUSE") to "Plastik". Before this change, neither Kcontrol nor
icons.desktop worked. After the change, icons.desktop worked, but Kcontrol
still comes up blank as always. Even changed the icon theme (to
KDE-Classic) ... no difference.
Interesting tidbit: when you select Plastik as the theme, it automagically
switched to the "crystal-SVG" ison theme, and I couldn't see any material
impact. So, changed back to that after KDE-Classic.

Ilya, All,
I got the kde3 desktop configured in my favorite blueslate theme and the icon
sizes set even with kcontrol broken :)
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/kde/opensuse_114-blueslate.jpghttp://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/kde/opensuse_114-blueslate-menu.jpg
If you want to configure you icon size, etc.. while waiting on kcontrol to be
fixed, you can use the following ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals as a reference.
Just exit kde then edit your ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals and add the
following sections:
[DesktopIcons]
[Icons]
[MainToolbarIcons]
[PanelIcons]
[SmallIcons]
[ToolbarIcons]
** you must NOT be in kde3 when you do this or kdeglobals may be overwritten on
exit. (it should preserve you setting, but why chance it)

I only use x86. Just unable to get KControl.desktop and icons.desktop to work
in 11.4. 11.3 and 11.2 never a problem, genned new prod'n 11.3/3,5 a few
weeks ago that I'm using now to write this. Using the same package
selection, install methodology as always.
Does the 11.4/3.5 combo possibly have a new dependency that used to be
included automatically in (say) 11.3 and 11.2? Link to (base) packages I
installed is in original post.
