Works fine, shows up in System > Configuration (easily movable to where "Personal Settings" sits now in Kmenu). Just one minor problem. Network Settings > Network Connection: "The specified library knetworkconfmodule could not be found ... The diagnostic is: Library files for "kcm_knetworkconfmodule.la" not found in path." Does the network configuration module work well when started alone from menu?
Hmmm. Had kdenetwork3, but not networkmanager-kde3 installed. Needed? Added that, no difference. Added kdenetwork3-IRC, Instant Messenger, lan, lisa, news, query and vnc. No difference. Running System > Configuration > Desktop Applet > KnetworkManager produces nothing. The "Settings" entry on Kmenu (between Run Command and My Computer) does not have any entries for NetworkManager. "kcmshell knetworkmanager" in Konsole has no errors on commandline, brings up a window: "The module KNetworkManager is not a valid configuration module ... The diagnostic is: The desktop file /opt/kde3/share/applications/kde/networkmanager.desktop does not specify a library". After this, clicking on Personal Settings > Network Settings brings up, for (Configure) Network Connections, an almost blank panel with the following output still: " "The specified library knetworkconfmodule could not be found ...The diagnostic is: Library files for "kcm_knetworkconfmodule.la" not found in paths." I have been unable to find a provider for kcm_knetworkconfmodule.la. BTW, clicking on Personal Settings > Advanced > Audio Encoding gives similar output, e.g., "The specified library audiocd could not be found ...The diagnostic is: Library files for "kcm_audiocd.la" not found in paths." Again, I can't find a provider. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

I see. It belongs to kdeadmin3, but knetworkconf was disabled in that package for some reason. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

It belongs to kdemultimedia3-CD package. It seems that unlike kcontrol, systemsettings cannot determine which modules are installed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

I have built the kdeadmin3 package with this module enabled. But upon start it says this distro is not supported and suggests to choose one. The closest one is SuSE 9.1. After choosing seems to work more or less correct. You can download the modified package here: (64-bit) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Ansus:/branches:/KDE:/KDE3/o... I D/L'd it and installed, logged in/out, chose Suse 9.1 and, as you observe, it seems to work fine and now fill in the Network Settings selection/panel when using Personal Settings. I briefly clicked on all the other selections offered by the new System Settings module, and all looks OK, with the exception of the previously-reported issue of the Audio Encoding panel/applet which is, I guess, to be expected. You're right; I missed that. Both sub-applets, on a right-click to the icon, work. Says "Network Manager is not Running", which is right since I haven't used/enabled it in the past (simple cat6 to the router). OK, then. FYI, I've mapped all the items that appear on the "Settings" (Kmenu, between Run Command and My Computer) menu and sub-menues, and the new "System Settings" module intended to replace the non-funtional "Personal Settings" thingy. The following items appear to be missing from the new System Settings icons/panel/applets: Appearance & Themes: GTK Styles, Launch Feedback, Theme Manager. Desktop: Configure the Panel, KDE Resources, KRandR Tray, Panels, Taskbar. Internet & Network: Web browser (and all its sub-menu items), Desktop Sharing, Samba, Wireless Network. KDE Components: Component Chooser, File Assoc, File Manager, KDE Performance. Peripherals: Display, Remote Controls Security & Privacy: Crypto, KDE Wallet, Privacy. Ilya, is there any chance that you will ever get the original KControl to work?

OK, Ilya. You have a 64-bit install, so I will wipe a partition and do the same. After a minimal-X install, I'll select only the following packages from the 11/4/3.5 repo: kde3-gtk-qt-engine kde3-kio_sysinfo kdeaddons3-konqueror kdeadmin3 kdeartwork3 kdeartwork3-kscreensaver kdeartwork3-sound kdebase3 (I think I also need the 32_bit module)) kdebase3-SuSE (added to auto pullin of "kdebase3-SuSE-branding-opensuse") kdebase3-apps kdebase3-kdm kdebase3-ksysguardd kdebase3-session kdebindings3 kdegames3 kdegraphics3 kdemultimedia3 kdemultimedia3-mixer kdenetwork3 kdepim3 kdeutils3 qtcurve-kde3 (optional) This should prove/disprove the theory that it might only be a 32-bit issue. I think the creation of the .kde3 directory on a clean 11.4 installation is the problem. Robert: 1. Renamed (Home)/.kde to .kde-orig on my (non-working) 11.4_32/3.5 install, and copied in a good (i.e., working) 11.3_32/kde3 installation on my HD. KControl.desktop still gave the blank left pane. Reset back to original. 2. Also did the same for /opt/kde3, and again no difference. Reset back to original. Robert, Ilya, Eric, I can also confirm that copying an 11.3 ~/.kde to 11.4 (and removing /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and making sure icon package installs are identical) will *not* fix the 11.4 empty kcontrol issue. If it would help, I don't mind setting up an account for Ilya on my laptop and configuring my router so you can log in. I have been trying to think of what additional information I can provide that will help, but I'm drawing blanks. If that is something you think will help, let me know and I'm happy to set it up. While you were doing your thing, I went out to my "kde_3.5_On_11.4RC2" SuseStudio creation (had to rebuild, thus the delay). Yes, when it comes up in its original form, the Kmenu "Settings" entry was not there. So I started poking all the .desktop files. This was too laborious, so I frustratedly right-clicked on the Panel > Configure Panel > Menus, and noted that "settings" *was* already ticked in the Optional Menus section, despite not showing up. Just doing nothing after viewing this, but saving, produced the Settings entry on Kmenu (and sub-categories, etc). So yes, Ilya, our approach was different, but same result. Also, despite "Settings" now appearing on Kmenu, still no joy (blank left panel) when Personal Settings (or KControl.desktop) is clicked. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Aww... Your taking all the fun out of: for i in /opt/kde3/share/applications/kde/*.desktop; do [[ $(grep Exec= $i) =~ kcmshell ]] >/dev/null && echo "kcmshell ${i/.desktop/}"; done -- David C.
