Hi,
I'm running opensuse 10.1 on a small cluster of G4's. The cluster is
used only for computation, so I've removed monitors, keyboards etc
and have the machines sitting on a shelf. Are there additional
powersaving measures I can enable? Will linux put the machines into
a "sleep" mode in a way similar to OSX if there are no cpu-intensive
processes running? (I notice that the cooling fans never seem to
spin down and am guessing that everything is running full-bore).
Would pulling the graphics cards, disconnecting zip, cdrom drives etc
reduce the electrical load substantially?

Well, after fiddling around, I finally put my overclocked G4 chip back
to stock speed(from 450 to 400Mhz). This seemed to have fixed the
problem, but alas no. While I was able to actually start the
installation with no issues now that I have an ATI Rage128/16MB video
card, I am still having problems. YaST will inform me that a package
has an error. If I hit retry or ignore, YaST fails and drops me back to
a terminal and then starts booting. One tme it even started the
system, but since i never actually entered a USID or password, I could
not do anything. If I go ahead and reboot the machine, I get back to
the start of that CD and it starts up again.
The error is: Err: 3:Package lsb-3.0-18 fails integrity check. Do you
want to retry downloading it, or abort installation?
Well, this last reboot got past the lsb package........Starting to look
like it will finally finish this time.
I had a problem with the ieee1284 package earlier, and on the
subsequent re-install, I deselected that package(Ummm, Macs don't have
standard parallel ports, nor an I855 which is set to install on default
either. Is there some reason that the i855 was put into the PPC tree?
That's an intel specific part).
I have tried different processors, different memory, different speeds,
differnt CD drives(the 32x drive that was in the machine won't start
the installer), different video cards, etc. I'm almost ready to give
up. Am I the only one having these kinds of problems, or am I the only
one trying to use these type of older machines? I have a hard time
believing that I have 5 macs that all have some type of hardware
problem.(7500, 9600, G3 beige, 6500, G3 B&W).
Any help would be appreciated. All help that I have already been given
has been greatly appreciated as well.

I have determined that the installation of suse 10.1's
most recent updates
breaks my screensaver. I reinstalled suse yesterday
to determine what
was causing my screensaver to break. The screensaver
worked right up
intil I did the updates. After that, if I right
clicked on the desktop
and went to Configure Desktop.. Screensaver the
screensavers would
take a couple of seconds to load and they would test
okay, but if I set
the time to 1 minute, hit Apply and OK, the window
would close but the
screensavers would never start.
Has anyone else noticed this problem on their ppc?
More importantly,
does anyone know how to get the screensaver working
again?
I have been able to replicate this problem on both a
G5 1.6 desktop and
a G4 1.25 Ghz dual desktop.

I just installed SL 10.1 on my dual-boot G3 iBook. Unfortunately, I did
not deselect the bootloader installation and thus YaST turned my iBook
in a single-boot Linux system.
Previously, I booted with the Open Firmware, by default it booted Linux
and I could also press space to boot Mac OS. What must I do to
configure the iBook that way again?
