am I hacked ?

Hi, I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev" and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0 length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have installed a rootkit or some such ? I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange. RS/6000 43p 140 does not boot (SuSE 7.1)

Hello everybody. Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ? I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html (ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,\zImage In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical: The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so). The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that. The system freezes (or reboots after a long time). (None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.) So obviously, none of these approaches works for me. What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied as files on an MS-DOS disk? Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p. BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251. Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions. FireWire

Hello! I am trying to install FireWire on my PPC Cube. I found on SuSe-Site an .rpm-Packet to install. There are a view problems with it. - It should, as far as I understood, upgrade the Kernel. - This shoud work, according to SuSe, work without problem. But, I have got problems with package-depencies. So, I installed it with rpm -U --nodeps... - now, the system doesn't recognise the datas modules.dep - I tried to remake it with depmode -a... Who can help me? As I know, SuSe 7.3 has got Kernel Version 2.4.12, but when I have a look with uname -r it shows me 2.2.16 why that? There is no support from SuSe-Side..., no Kernel with FireWire, no possibility to make backups from a Cube (But, backups are so important). And, SuSe sais, Cube is a supported PPC. problems after yast2 online update

Hi there. I am running SuSe 7.1 on a Apple Powerbook. After doing a 'Yast2 Online Update' I have a lot of Konqueror Crashes (signal 11 SIGSEGV). In my 'boot.msg' I discovered a strange part concerning 'kdm'. Maybe thats a hint. ( That Zope is not running is another topic. Maybe somebody has an idea for that issue too ) You'll find a snip of the 'boot.msg' and the 'y2logRPMShort' in this mail. Where is /disks in ftp sites?

Trying to get to /disks directory in the ftp sites and cannot find it in the PPC subdirectories. Did SUSE remove it from the ftp sites? I want to get the image for the PPC to use RAWRITE or DD to create a boot diskette. I get the impression after searching, that I first have to get the SUSE ISO tree, and do the rawrite from there. I will be trying to boot SUSE from a Apple Work Group Server 9650/233.(I believe it is OLD WORLD). Any hints, urls, faqs, will be welcomed nyny(a)ny.com

root directory gets mounted read only

Hi! I am having huge problems when trying to boot linux since the root directory gets mounted read only. I have a working fstab which should make sure that "/" gets mounted read and write. fstab reads: /dev/hda12 / ext2 defaults 1 1 i have also tried changing it to: /dev/hda12 / ext2 rw,defaults 1 1 without any improvement. I am not a linux expert so i don´t know what to do, for the moment i have added the line "exec /bin/mount -o rw,remount /dev/hda12 /" at the top of the /etc/init.d/boot file. This makes my system work a little bit better but still a lot of programs doesn´t work. Does anyone know how to fix this "the right way"? If so please let me know, i would hate to be forced to re-install everything since i have spent many hours compiling in order to get everything to work. Regards Peter

Configure x11

I am still working on getting my formac proformance 3 to work. Now I have done a clean install using the 8 CD box of SuSE 7.3 that arrived today by mail. For the first time Yast2 worked for me and I have proof that there must be a way to enable a graphical interface using this card. I tried configuring the X-Window system using sax2 and xfree86 but nothing worked. I always get an error message saying: Fatal server errors: no screens found But I am sure that it has to work somehow. Can somebody maybe point me in the right direction? I don't think I will have to re-compile the kernel with a specific patch since yast2 worked flawlessly... Any help is greatly appreciated. Stephan

MO on FireWire

Hello! On my PPC G4 Cube I have installed SuSe Linux 7.3 with Kernel 2.4.12. After many reinstallations one of the most important thing for me is to make a backup, Since the cube has got only FireWire connections, I have to do it through this port. Finally I arrived to activate the FireWire with modprobe sbp2. With dmesg the MO-Drive is recognised, but I can't mount it with mount /dev/sda2 /mnt (the drive is not an HFS+-Disk!) A CD-RW is recognised and I can read a CD (not write in the moment) How do I have to continue? Thanks Peter, Berne, Switzerland

SuSE 7.3, formac proformance III and gui

I successfully installed SuSE 7.3 via ftp today. So far, everything works ok, but I cannot seem to be able to get any xfree or kde/gnome configured. I have a Gravis TT (similar to Umax Pulsar) with a plugged in formac proformance (using a permedia 3 chip by tdfx?!). I started sax2 and it tried to detect any hardware bt after after 90 mins it still tried to id my hardware, so I figured it crashed. (I used BootX with the video=ofonly option, does this affect anything?) How can I get my Linux with the standard 2.4.12 kernel to configure xfree 4.x correctly? Do I have to patch the kernel with the graphics card driver like explained on this page: http://www.irisa.fr/prive/dolbeau/pm3fb/pm3fb.html Since I am a newbie I feel a little threatened by the CLI and would love to get the chance to use a window based system for the time being.. Hi, I am using SuSE 7.3 on a Power Mac G3 with Kernel 2.4.12. I want to upgrade the Kernel to 2.4.18 So I dowloaded the Kernel from the www.penguinppc.org page from Olafs directory , the kernel file and also the config file. I know how to copy the kernel file to the mac side and to choose it. The question ist what do I have to do on the linux side. ( I know I have to compile the modules etc..... ) Does anybody have a fast and stabe way how to advice me ?? Best Regards Alfred

Hi, some of you may have installed KDE 3.0.x on your PPC and may see a problem with the duration of starting of an application. For example konqueror needs unbelievable long to start and so on ... Hello List! I have searched the archives but haven't found a solution for my problem, so I turn to you. I am trying to install SuSE 7.3 for PPC on my Gravis TT (similar to Umax Pulsar or S900). A 7.0 version of suse worked before, but I don't have the cds anymore, so i tried an ftp install of 7.3. Unfortunately i get an error when I start BootX using the oldworld-install kernel. At the hardware detection the install stops. <suse_says> Starting hardware detection... > scsi.2: ioctl </suse_says> Do I need to add any commandos for the kernel to skip something? I am somewhat lost here, so if you have any idea how I can get bootx to get me any further please let me know. Thanks, Stephan

hfsutils help needed

Hello, I normally use xhfs to read/write to my /dev/hda12 hfs partition. I want to write a short script to automate the copying of a backup I make daily and need to know how to use the hcopy command. I've read the man page and searched with google but there seems to be no explanation of how to do this. I try hmount /dev/hda12 it mounts the parition called "shared" In the current directory I try this but.... 19:57 joss:~ $ hcopy doc_backup /dev/hda12 hcopy: "doc_backup": no such file or directory 20:00 joss:~ $ I try this but... 20:00 joss:~ $ hcopy doc_backup "shared" hcopy: "doc_backup": no such file or directory I try this but it copies a directory called "shared" to the hfs volume. 20:01 joss:~ $ hcopy doc_backup ":shared" 20:01 joss:~ $ any ideas? Incomplete installation problems

Hi there. I am having difficultly installing the 4 CD distribution of SuSE Linux 6.4 on my Umax C600 Mac clone, essentially a PowerPC 603e. The installation appears to proceed normally until YaST1 terminates and (presumably) control is handed over to the newly installed kernel, at which point I get . . Starting Name Service Cache Daemon..... FAILED! . . I'm not sure what this means but I can still log in. The real problem arises when I restart or boot up from the internal ATA hard drive, (onto which Linux has just been installed. I have MacOS 9 on a SCSI drive). I get as far as . . Loading Menstat Module... . . at which point it says . . It seems that the last installation was not complete. To be sure it will be started again... . . and YaST1 fires up once more. If I then exit YaST1 as quickly as possible the boot up process continues, and this time I get . . Starting Name Service Cache Daemon..... DONE . . and everything's fine. Any suggestions as to what to do to avoid YaST1 each time I boot up would be much appreciated. Seb Tennant.
