am I hacked ?

Hi, I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev" and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0 length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have installed a rootkit or some such ? I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange. RS/6000 43p 140 does not boot (SuSE 7.1)

Hello everybody. Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ? I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html (ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,\zImage In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical: The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so). The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that. The system freezes (or reboots after a long time). (None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.) So obviously, none of these approaches works for me. What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied as files on an MS-DOS disk? Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p. BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251. Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions. FireWire

Hello! I am trying to install FireWire on my PPC Cube. I found on SuSe-Site an .rpm-Packet to install. There are a view problems with it. - It should, as far as I understood, upgrade the Kernel. - This shoud work, according to SuSe, work without problem. But, I have got problems with package-depencies. So, I installed it with rpm -U --nodeps... - now, the system doesn't recognise the datas modules.dep - I tried to remake it with depmode -a... Who can help me? As I know, SuSe 7.3 has got Kernel Version 2.4.12, but when I have a look with uname -r it shows me 2.2.16 why that? There is no support from SuSe-Side..., no Kernel with FireWire, no possibility to make backups from a Cube (But, backups are so important). And, SuSe sais, Cube is a supported PPC. Mozilla error

Hello, I've just updated to the latest Gnome rpms from the SuSE ftp site (June 21st) and get this error when trying to run Mozilla: Cannot find mozilla runtime directory. Exiting. Also, when trying to edit Nautilus preferences, it quits on me with this error: Eel-ERROR **: file eel-font-picker.c: line 781 (global_font_list_get): assertion failed: (global_font_list != NULL) aborting... Aborted Any ideas on how to fix these problems? Thanks very much, Joss --

Bootkonfiguration New World PPCs - OF Version,SuSE Version,Modell

Hallo Liste, ich habe inzwischen mitbekommen, dass ich nicht der einzige bin, der sich schon länger mit der boot-konfiguration rumgeschlagen hat. Deshalb möchte ich diejenigen, die Erfolg hatten (Linux von Festplatte starten), darum bitten ihr Modell, die Version der SuSE - Dis, und ihre OpenFirmware Version sowie evtl. auch die Vorgehensweise anzugeben. Ich besitze einen slotin iMac, versuchte es mit SuSE 7.3 und habe bis auf OF 4.1.9 upgedated. Eine Empfehlung ist die SuSE 7.0 Version zu verwenden, aber ich möchte erstmal versuchen, ob sich irgendwelche wechselseitigen Abhängigkeiten abklären lassen. Grüße, Peter

Guten Tag! Folgenden Beitrag hab ich erstmal im Macwelt.de-Forum veröffentlicht: Hallo zusammen! Vielleicht interessiert dies sogar jemanden... Seit zwei Jahren versuche ich, auf einem Macintosh (jetzt auf einem Cube) Linux zu installieren. Zuerst SuSe 7.0, nun SuSe7.3. Meine Erfahrungen als absoluter DAU (Dümmster Anzunehmender User) sind auf diesem Gebiet entsprechend. Ok, ich hab in der Zwischenezeit viel gelernt: - Dass der Support von SuSe absolut unzulänglich ist. Schlussendlich hab ich, mit Bücherkauf (Linux für Dummies, Linux Installation, Konfiguration, Anwendung von Michael Kofler, Addison-Wesley) ein System, das gerade mal knapp funktioniert: - USB-Drucker Canon S450 druckt, nur im Textmodus, unter KDE 2.1 und KOffice ist die Schrift irgendwie. - HP-LaserJet am Netzwerk geht bis jetzt nicht. - Internet via Router (ADSL) geht endlich, Modem war nicht möglich. - FireWire geht nicht. - Sound ging endlich, nach einigem Einstellen und stundenlangem Suchen im Internet. - Abstürze öfters, wenn ich was ausprobiere, in Literatur ist nur angegeben, wie das System funktioniert, und wenns mal nicht geht: JA NICHT AUSSCHALTEN... gut, ich hab trotzdem ausgeschalten, natürlich ohne Backup, da FireWire nicht geht. - System neu installiert! - Bootloader zu Beginn geht nicht mehr. Ich bin seit Tagen dran, das Ding zu konfigurieren, SuSe-Anleitung ist unverständlich, Hinweise im Internet und in den obenerwähnten Büchern, stundenlanges ausprobieren. - Nach der erneuten Installation hab ich mir vorgenommen, FireWire so rasch als möglich zum Laufen zu bringen, um endlich Backups machen zu können. Hab endlich einen Hinweis gefunden, wie FireWire integriert werden könnte. Keine Hinweise im Internet, keine Hilfe von SuSe. Irgendwo, nach stundenlangen Suchen, endlich was gefunden in der Supportdatenbank von SuSe, ein .rpm-Paket. Nur, leider nicht installierbar, da die Abhängigkeiten nicht stimmen. - Die deutsch-schweizer Tastatur ist nicht richtig implementiert, trotz mehrmaligem Mitteilen und Nachfragen beim SuSe-Support keine Hilfe. Ich hab nur endlich rausgefunden, welche Datei dass tatsächlich falsch ist. Support von SuSe hat nicht kapiert, seit zwei Jahren nicht!!! Diese Liste könnte ich noch weiter fortsetzen, wenn man nicht Programmierer oder Informatiker ist, ein Ding der schieren Unmöglichkeit. Fazit: Linux ist nicht brauchbar auf Macs für Normalsterbliche. Ausser: Du bastelst gerne (wie ich), bist ehrgeizig und willst etwas begonnenes zu Ende führen (wie ich), hast keinen Fernseher (wie ich, Ersatz...), machst auf dem Compi keine Spiele, sondern spielst lieber mit Systemen und Programmen (wie ich)... und bist momentan arbeitslos oder hast sonst eine Unmenge Zeit! Hello all, while developing a php based website hosted on my up-to-date SuSE 7.3/PPC box, I found apache crashing each time I tried to POST a form with encoding="multipart/form-data". Hallo, meine Abenteuer mit SUSE Linux 8 sieht -trotz langjähriger UNIX Erfahrung- wie folgt aus. SUSE Linux 8 installiert sich fast automatisch. Fast alle Devices wurden erkannt, nicht jedoch der CD-Brenner. War mir egal, denn Linux ist soviel performanter als Windows. Problem mit .avi Files konnte ich nach vielen Stunden emsiger google Suche und Builds lösen. KDE korrumpiert seine Config-Files wenn man nur hinreichend of genug an Themes, Styles, usw., "schraubt". Abhilfe sollten der Download der neusten Bugfixes bringen. Danach wurde wieder an Themes, Styles, usw., "geschraubt". Der Crash kam propmpt. Dieses Mal jedoch waren nicht nur die Files von ~/.kde korrupt, sondern die Inodes des reiserfs. Die Tools von Linux konnten das Problem auch nach -zig Versuchen nicht beheben. Hallo Peter Haas! SuSe-Linux direkt ab Festplatte zu booten geht, mit ebenfalls stundenlangem Uminstallieren und ausprobieren von yaboot, os-chooser, ev. BootX App, ev. OpenFirmware. Ich habs sogar schon mal hingebracht, jedesmal, wenn mir das System wieder abverreckt, etwas anders, bisher nicht klar reproduzierbar. Dazu kann ich nur sagen: - Nimm den Ordner Suseboot von der CD zu SuSe Linux 7.0, bei mir hats mit dem Teil von SuSe 7.3 nie funktioniert, dort muss ein Fehler drauf sein, vermut ich. Auch da: bisher kein anständiger Support von SuSe. Auf meinem Powerbook funktionierts z.Z., auf dem Cube nicht. Dort hab ichs nicht mehr hingekriegt. Die Anleitung im Buch SuSe 7.3 zu "NewWorl Macintosh" ist teilweise verwirrlich, grossenteils unklar und unlogisch. Ich habs mit den beiden Büchern, die ich unten erwähnt hab plus dem Buch SuSe 7.0 doch noch hingekriegt gehabt. Grüsse Peter, Bern, Schweiz Am Freitag den, 28. Hi list, I am running a ppc 9500 with PPC SuSE 7.3. The second, non-onboard eth- interface (eth0; 192.168.1.6) is a friendly net 10/100 pci-card with a DEC-chip. This interface works fine, providing the office LAN/Intranet with AppleTalk, ftp, samba, http and rsync (base install, with IP forward enabeled, no firewall). After all the box should also be a router, forwarding the packages to the onboard ethernet device (eth1, 192.168.100.2; -> linked to a bintek router, 192.168.100.1 -> connected to a dsl-modem). I also added the bintec adress as the default route: Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth1 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 192.168.100.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth1 Strange: its possible to use the mentioned daemons/services and to telnet via LAN to eth0, but it's not possible to ping or get through to eth1 or even reach the bintec-router (and of course to the internet). Did I miss to activate a special service or to edit a certain config-file?? Or is it just impossible to use this ppc as a router (eg the onboard ethernet does not accept ip-packages from a pci-eth-card?). If anyone uses a similar and _running_ routing ppc-box - please let me know (there is another oldworld ppc waiting for doing still a great job...)! which kernel.rpm for RS/6000 B50 ?

Hello, I'm running Suse 7.1 on RS/6000 B50 with k_chrp-2.4.2-4 kernel (accordingly to the `rpm -qa | grep k_` output). I would like to install a more recent kernel, but I'm not sure, which package from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/2.4.16 I should get. k_chrp64-2.4.16-53.ppc.rpm is for 64 bits machines, right ? That leaves k_deflt-2.4.16-55.ppc.rpm, but I'm not very confident about the default part. Anyway, the kernel.rpm installation should be as simple as rpm -ivh k_chrp64-2.4.16-53.ppc.rpm, editing /etc/lilo.conf and running /sbin/lilo -v ? I'll be able to use my old and working (2.4.2) kernel as well, or will rpm -ivh command overwrite the /boot/vmlinux and I should make an backup of it before installing ? I am trying to access an HFS formated Zip drive at /dev/sda4. I invoked "hmount /dev/sda4" from root, exited the console, and clicked on the Zip drive icon on my KDE 2.2.1 desktop. The following error popped up: "Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified." I have been able to "solve" the issue by doing a kludge where I changed the /etc/fstab entry for the Zip drive from: /dev/sda4 /media/zip auto noauto,user 0 0 to /dev/sda4 /media/zip hfs noauto,user 0 0 At some point however, I am going to need to access a Zip disk in another format and will have totaly forgotten about the kludge. I first tried to get this issue answered on the SuSE-E list, as I am working at this time mainly from a Athlon powered box with SuSE 7.3 Pro (KDE 2.2.1), but there doesn't seem to be anyone on the list that has any experience with HFS. hallo, i try to boot suse linux today and i receive: activating swap-devices in /etc/fstab . . . failed . . . . fsck.ext2 /dev/sdc6 failed (status 8)! Run it manually! failed laoding keymap mac-us.map.gz failed finally, after giving root password to login (repair filesystem ) # 'blink' i am still relatively new to this os ; however, i did try to source problem within manual with diffikulty. any assistance very much appreciate. ekaterina

SuSE w/UMAX Pulsar?

Hi, I am new to this SuSE list, I generally hang out at SuSE-E. I have a UMAX Pulsar that I would like to install SuSE onto. Is this a doable project? Anyone on the list that has done this or has a URL for someone with a page about how they did it? I would prefer to get SuSE to run without Boot X if possible. My setup is a UMAX Pulsar (purchased in Denmark), with a Matrox graphics card and a G3 upgrade. I still have the old 604e motherboard as well, if an install with a 604e is more likely to succeed. Otherwise, the system is pretty standard. I won't purchase SuSE PPC before I know if this has a good chance of working. I have looked through the list archive and found that there are those that have attempted a project like this, but never any full report on anyone being successfull. Cheers, Brian

It requires a very small HFS partition on your disk, where you put a fake Mac-like system folder, whose system file is actually a boot application. It is accompanied by a kernel file. You do have to have a MacOS at first, in order to change the resources in that system file, to read the correct kernel file and pass the correct kernel parameters (mainly video settings and root partition). Once you have done that, and chosen that System folder as your boot, you won't need to have MacOS on that computer again, unless you change video settings etc., so you should probably have a MacOS boot CD with ResEdit on it, lying around for emergencies, but that's about it. KDM login only allows KDE

Hello, Since the KDE3 upgrade disaster and the switch back to KDE2 Ihave only been able to log in to KDE. WHen setting up the log in screen in KControl as root, i enter Gnome and Blackbox as usual but when I select them in the KDM login panel, it takes me to KDE every time. Any idea why this has started to happen and how I get it working properly? Thanks Joss --

Hi SuSE Geekos When can we expect SuSE to launch SuSE 8.x for PPC? I am going to Bolivia for five month (among other things doing Linux-evangelism); from the middle of July until chrismas. It would be great to travel with an up-to-date Linux-distribution with KDE3.x, AbiWord 1.x, Emacs 21.x, Mozilla 1.x and other stuff that is hard to get with limited bandwith. Hi! In my Cube originally is an ATI Rage Graficcard. In changed now to the Geforce 2mx64MB, but I can't use it under SuSe Linux (Kernel 2.4.12, KDE 2), the Monitor (Apple Studio Display 15") stays black. That means I had to go back to the ATI Rage. Cyrus-IMAP on SuSE-7.3-PPC

Hello, I had already a mail exchange on the subject a few weeks ago with Peter. My Cyrus-IMAP server on an Intel SuSE-7.3 just crashed (RAM problem). I managed to install a backup server on a G3 but I have problem using it because the SuSE-PPC rpm packages for Cyrus-IMAP and Cyrus-SASL are apparently uncomplete. Peter Poeml send me the url ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/poeml/7.3/db-3.1.17-100.rpm and the package solved a first problem (cyradm did not work at first) but I still have a problem of authentication (I can only make a "plain" authentication, sasl seems inoperant). Peter send me some way to solve that but with my other problem I lost the message. Could he or someone else tell me where I could find a complete package for Cyrus-IMAP and Cyrus-SASL for SuSE-7.3-PPC? -- Alain Barthélemy

upgrading mod_php using yast2?

I'm running Apache 1.3.20 and PHP/4.0.6 as part of SuSE PPC 7.3 and I want to upgrade to a newer version of PHP to avoid some security holes. I'm trying to do all my upgrades via yast2 so that I don't have to mess around with manual builds and installs (which I am all too likely to mess up). So I run yast2 and it says there's an update to mod_php and I check it to be installed and continue. Then I restart my web server with apachectl graceful and check to see what I'm running and it is still 4.0.6. (this is what the phpinfo() command returns when run on that web server) I don't understand how to upgrade PHP using yast2, or any other way for that matter. Auch das Anlegen eines neuen Users, für den ich als Land- und Sprachauswahl im KDE "Russisch" eingestellt habe, führte nicht zum Erfolg - was habe ich falsch gemacht? Hi people hav anyone experienced to install KDE 3 on Linux SuSE PPC 7.3? I downloaded KDE from suse site, but after installation with yast the login is always with KDE 2. Infact KDE not update the old version but it addict itself on /opt/kde3. Plus, if I start kde 3 from failsafe it run in a very slow mode, such KDE 2. Anyone has some advice? Thanks in advance. Hi, The official 1.0.0 release of OpenOffice.org for PPC Linux is now available! OpenOffice.org basically supplies an almost drop in replacement for Microsoft Office (and is getting better with every release). New in this release ---------------------- - new hyphenator - new "install" script to make installation easier - lots of stability improvements and bug fixes - improved KDE and GNOME desktop integration - lots of new dictionaries available from: http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/lingucomponent/download_dictionary.html For more information including the full source code/ release notes / FAQs, etc check out the OpenOffice.org website: http://www.openoffice.org System Requirements ------------------------ - any ppc linux system with glibc 2.2.X or higher, - XFree86 4.0 or higher - 200 meg of free disk space This includes YellowDogLinux 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2, SuSE 7.3 and higher, MandrakeSoft 8.1, 8.2 Beta and Debian PPC. If you have success with any other PPC distributions, please let me know.
