SuSE w/UMAX Pulsar?
Hi, I am new to this SuSE list, I generally hang out at SuSE-E. I have a UMAX Pulsar that I would like to install SuSE onto. Is this a doable project? Anyone on the list that has done this or has a URL for someone with a page about how they did it? I would prefer to get SuSE to run without Boot X if possible. My setup is a UMAX Pulsar (purchased in Denmark), with a Matrox graphics card and a G3 upgrade. I still have the old 604e motherboard as well, if an install with a 604e is more likely to succeed. Otherwise, the system is pretty standard. I won't purchase SuSE PPC before I know if this has a good chance of working. I have looked through the list archive and found that there are those that have attempted a project like this, but never any full report on anyone being successfull. Cheers, Brian

My Pulsar (604e @ 200 MHz, VillageTronics Video Card) is running in a dual boot configuration (MacOS 9.1 / SusePPC 7.3). I had no problems installing Linux. The only problem was finding the right "Video Settings" for BootX, but as you can only put two crosses in these settings, it isn't very hard to try out.

AFAIK you can't boot these "Old World Macintoshes" without BootX. Yours, Christian -- Christian Schmidt schmidtc@chemie.uni-hamburg.de

I believe it is possible to adjust the firmware to do this, but I don't know how. Anybody with ideas? Cheers, Brian

At the moment I have activated none og the settings "BootX Options" are offering. If you want, I'll send you a screenshot. Yours, Christian -- Christian Schmidt schmidtc@chemie.uni-hamburg.de

Let me correct you a little bit. In order to pass correct video settings to the kernel, you need to pass a certain string in the "kernel parameters" line of BootX. The checkboxes merely allow you to disregard these parameters, and pass the default Mac settings from MacOS to Linux, in which case, you will never get any acceleration. So, as a matter of fact, to do things correctly, you should *uncheck* the "No Video Driver" checkbox, and put in the correct kernel parameters. These parameters typically look like: video=atyfb:vmode:10,cmode:16 The type of frame buffer and vmode depend on your video card. The above line is for an ATY Mach64 card (which is not very well supported by current X implementations). There are other frame buffers, like platinumfb, imsttfb (if I'm not mistaken) etc. The vmode reflects resolution and refresh rate. vmode 10, for example, is 800x600 at 60Hz. The cmode is the bit depth you wish the video card to be - 8, 15, 16, 24, or 32bits. There should be a more thorough explanation, probably in SuSE's knowledge base, and if not, you can find it around, maybe in LinuxPPC.
