I was able to complete a basic install of 7.3 on a new G4/800 (single
processor) with an Apple 17" flat panel using yast2 (colors were messed
up but useable). I was able to boot the new system without having to
specify a kernel video parameter. Colors in X were messed up but
useable. I then set run level 3 as the default until I could get
XFree86 4.2.0 installed and working properly. The console worked fine
(again, no kernel video parameter was needed). I then proceeded to
upgrade to kernel 2.4.16 and modutils 2.4.11 as was mentioned in the
following Support Database article:
I then followed the instructions in the following Support Database
article to get the radeon framebuffer going with my Apple 17" flat
Unfortunately, I could not get any combination to work (monitor went
black). I tried the following combinations:
I also tried not specifying a video parameter but that also resulted in
a black screen. I am able to get useable video with video=ofonly. I
then proceeded to upgrade to XFree86 4.2.0 using RPMs found at:
I could not find an xf86glu RPM there and there were no complaints
during the upgrade so I still have the 4.1.0 version installed. I did
try to uninstall it but a bunch of other packages depended on it. I
then attempted to configure 4.2.0 using the following command as was
mentioned in the first article above:
# sax2 -m 0=fbdev
Colors were messed up again but still useable. It didn't detect my
video card and when I tried to specify it, the list of Radeon models
provided did not include the 7500 (not too surprising since it is new).
I didn't know what to do at that point so I aborted configuration and am
now writing this message.
Should I have any expectation of getting accelerated X working on this
system with an ADC flat panel?
I am replacing my current G4/466 with the G4/800 and will be sending the
G4/466 and the Apple 17" flat panel to my parents. The G4/466 has a
Rage 128 Pro card in it which is working fine with my Apple 22" Cinema
Display (which I am keeping). If I will be unable to get the Radeon
7500 working, I plan to swap the cards between the two systems and keep
the Rage 128 Pro.
has anybody gotten any success with a Motorola Powerstack (PREP) machine and
the onboard Cirrus Logic vga chip (GD 5434).
I just compiled the most recent kernel I could get my hands on (2.4.18-pre7),
the boot messages say

That's how you start the darn wordprocessor of Open-Office but how do you
start the darn presentation program + excell-like program (how do you still
call that in english, tableur in french). I read once it was something like
"simpress". I installed the Open-Office version delivered by SuSE 7.3 (ppc
and not ppc).
I am trying to install 7.3 on a umax c600, with a Sonnet Crescendo G3/L2
card and internal SCSI CD drive. The MacOS is v8.1. I'm booting with
extensions off, so the G3 card is not active (though I hope it will
eventually run under Linux!)
As advised in a recent post to this list, I downloaded the 2.4.2 kernel
and ramdisk image. I am running BootX from a suseboot folder on my hard
Things seem to start out fine, with Tux the Penquin bobbing his head and
tapping his foot a few times. The last messages printed to the console

Then it seems to hang, as it tries to read from the CD.
Earlier, as the kernel is booting, it recognizes the CD drive as:
Toshiba CD-ROM XM-5701TA Rev:0167
Are there any special kernel arguments I should be using? I never seem to
get to a command prompt once the kernel takes over from MacOS.
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
hi there! i'm very happy about my running suse7.1 - system on my
g4-titanium, but there are to problems left:
1.) booting with selection between macosX (first hfs+partition)
macos9 (second hfs+partition)
suselinux (third hfs partition)
it would be so nice if i could select one of them with my mousepad -
can anybody help me (PLEASE!)
2.) its so hard for me due to the cons.saver or the apmd (not running!)
that everytime when i'm thinking the console switches to black and
doesn't come back so that i have to switch to another and back if i want
to continue my work. is there a possibility to turn this feature off
completely or tty by tty ?
can anybody help me (PLEASE!)
btw. is there a special version for tleds/xtleds working on the powerbook?
greetings to all of you...
is there any way to install suseppc directly on this:
umax s900, acard IDE controller, ide device with installed macos9.1 and untill yesterday suseppc7.1. If I boot in installer, there was no IDE Device found (Only scsi device and cd). Are ther any kernelarguments to set or installationkernels, so i am able to install suseppc directly?

This is XFree86 3.3.6, try /etc/X11/XF86Config.
I think the X Server has problems on some chips with 24 bit. Try the
command "fbset", you will get a line like that:
geometry 640 480 640 480 16
The "16" is the color depth, if you have 24 then do a
fbset -a -depth 8
Then run "sax2 -a". There is a line DefaultColorDepth in
/etc/X11/XF86Config. change it from 8 to 15 and everything should be
$ man clone
