Just (a week ago) completed my first PPC installation "without" problems and I have dedicated a week browse around the system and figure out what is different between PPC and x86 (this is my first Mac and I like it) But were can I get more software? Freshmeat? Is there a single source were I can find software for SuSE PPC or do I just have to keep on browsing? From the X86 world I am used to find the software I want, but now ... Very little. I am looking for Java developing tools like J builder (yes I like Netbeans, but another would be nice) and and office package like StarOffice is there any out there? If there is very few apps for PPC and there is very little effort to port more. What can be done to change this situation (yes I know I can do it my self :-) I am basically trying to find out some more about the PPC community I know this questions have probably been answered several times, but I am brand new to PPC Regards Even

Ricochet usb modem? Pismo powerbook usb support?

Here comes post #2 for the day. =] Anyone have suse 7.0 running up-to-spec on a pismo powerbook? I'm having great trouble with a usb modem. I tried upgrading the kernel to 2.4, etc. It's a ricochet wireless modem, it uses standard AT modem commands. It will dial and so fourth, but pppd craps out when wvdial tries to fire it up. Any help is greatly appreciated, -taylor

Sax2-4.2.7 PPC problem

Hi, I have problem with newest Sax2-4.2.7 PPC. I am bought SuSE 7.0 PPC, and it seems Sax2 supplied with this distribution is outdated and does not work well with newest Apple hardware. I have downloaded new saxtools 2-1-16 and Sax2-4.2.7. However, Sax2-4.2.7 complains about unresolved depencency problems (perl-storable, perl-gettext, libXrender, libc.so.6). I have all perl, mesa and XFree86-4.01 modules installed (from 7.0). Please inform me which packages need to be installed (and downloaded from) to resolve depencency problems. Thanks in advance. Pre-compiled 2.4 kernels?

Hi, This is my first time posting to this list. If I manage to blatantly disrespect some "official mailing list rule", I apologize in advance. =] My question is this: Back in the day of the 2.2.16 kernel, pre-compiled kernels could be downloaded through benh's ppc linux page. I am now noticing the lack of pre-compiled 2.4 kernels anywhere on the internet. Do they exist? Thanks, -Taylor

Usb modem?

Hi agian, I have a wireless ricochet modem, which uses standard modem commands. I can connect to the internet through it, but the connection is super-slow and stalls constantly. I have tried the option "novj" in my /etc/ppp/options file because I heard it would help. It didn¹t. =] I Have tried 2.2.16 and 2.4 kernels. Both allow me to dial and maintain an extremely slow - unstable connection. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, -taylor

SuSE Linux on RS/6000

Hello. I installed SuSE 7.0 Linux for PPC on an RS/6000 43p model 150. Before installing SuSE I had AIX 4.3.3 in that box so, I had to format the hard disk with the AIX diagnostics CD, because if you don't do that, you cannot install SuSE. Later I had to install again AIX in that box, but I'm not able. I've tried to format the hard disk, but is useless. Has anyone tried to install SuSE in an RS/6000 and after, tried to install AIX? I'm not even able to restore the backup copy of the operating system done with mksysb (aix smitty) Thanks in advance Regards, Jorge Cambra

Unable to install on G4 500 with SCSI and Cinema display : Solved.

Over the last week I have gotten so much help from the group that I thought I should give back what something. A while ago I asked for help installing SuSE PPC 7.0 on my G4 500 I ordered my machine with SCSI and later I installed an ATA drive. Symptom Unable to Boot of the CD and drive partition. Message during boot: >From CD: Disk error wrong partition 1, then black. Nothing happens after that >From Disk: various messages, then black. For a long time I was sure that it was a SCSI error and I searched for answers in that direction, however it turned out to be the ADC connection on the video card. Fix: Download the later Kernel from SuSE, extract it and rename it. Change the yaboot to image= vmlinux label=install root=/dev/what ever you drve is, mine is sda6 initrd=ramdisk.image.gz append="load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=64000 video=atyfb video=ofonly" Have the CD in the drive and go for it. The kernel will find the SCSI drive (at least ATTO SCSI cards) the installation should proceed as normal. Then after installation Start up with your Apple CD and edit the yaboot.conf file again image = vmlinux label = linux root = /dev/sda9 append = "video=atyfb video=ofonly" The append line is VERY important. DO NOT DO WHAT SuSE Say you should do :-) at their web site they propose to insert a this append line : "video=aty128fb:vmode22" it does not work on my machine, if it works on yours use it, it Is a better choice. Their solution loads the video driver, mine does not. Finding the right modline and driver is work in progress, so don¹t ask ill send an update when I have it. Regards Even

Suse 7.0 and PPC 604 machines

Hi. I was just wondering if this suse 7.0 will recognise IDE cards in a ppc 604 machine and the ide drives attached to them. 6.4 could not do that with my machine (or i just didnt know how ;-). Also is it possible to recognize both the SCSI and IDE drives with this new version? Any insght would be greatly appreciated :-D Cheers MARCUS

php4 segfaulting every time

Hi, Anybody know why this might happen? I just ugraded to the latest Apache and mod_php4 RPMs from the SuSE ftp server. I got through the libsnmp problem, and Apache starts up and handles static pages correctly. But now everything that ends in .php causes the Apache child process to segfault and die (even a simple one-liner test file). Help with module loading

I have no idea any more! it is probably easy but i can't figure this out I have a PowerBook G3 (bronze) SuSE 7.0 kernel 2.4.1 a week ago i figured that i should update the kernel from the SuSE Site. so i downloaded the rpm files and installed them. Then, I rebooted the machine and no modules got loaded. confused and disturbed i managed to cd my way into the /lib/modules/ dir but everything was there. I used insmod -k and everything was OK ( until next time I reboot) but in the long run manually load every module is not very fun. PPC so far

Not a Flame, I still use SuSE on several machines and I probably will for a long time, and it is only because I like it, I bother to write this message. It have been an interesting time installing and configuring suse linuxPPC. There have been more problems than I expected. I have been using several Linux versions (X86) over several years, so I feel quite confident in that environment, but PPC have several differences (and I don't want to mess it up) or it could be that I am just making the difference bigger, this is my first Mac notebook so I am a little fresh. 1 after installing anything with Yast I loose my eth0 depmod does not change anything ldconfig does not fix it insmod -f complains about not finding the directory Yast2 is complaining about Error 255 modprobe tells me that I "can't locate module bmac.o The last times it have fixed itself when I run Yast2, but this time Error 255 2 The Monitor problem The standard Apple Hardware is quite standard they don¹t change video cards that often (or any other hardware) I can see that there is problems in the X86 world, but on Mac? I know that the information Apple is willing to share is a joke, but any distribution should be able to make some standard scripts (choose your model) 3 Support I did send an email to SuSE regarding the installation problems I have on my G4. The answer did not help me, and I waited several days. According to another "unnamed" mailing list, my specific problem was quite common for G4 and there was a "fix". I have to admit that I have not tried it so this could be premature. But just having knowledge about the fact that a problem exists, and not informing the customer is not right. If SuSE would have told me (I did not find it on the site) that there is a problem with the video card in G4 could have saved hours in searching for the problem, I could have started at once, in the right direction. 4 Support #2 This mailing list, the number of messages is not very high, but the response is phenomenal, the best I have ever seen. And the help is the same. I am in awe to the people at SuSE that runs it. It reminds me of the early news groups. One of my greatest concerns is that Linux have a reputation for being very stable. PPC is stable but some of the major software is not, (it seems like sax2 ) is unable to save the info to XF86Config, eth0 is dropping out, it is probably an easy fix for it (I have not looked at the web site yet) but I would imagine that this would be somewhat intimidating for a Mac user (no offence) so a section in the manual describing how to edit the XF86Conf with emacs would have been great. It would also have been great to have a page about what to do after upgrading, how to get the modules to load... I know this is just a rant, but hopefully someone is at least reading it and considering some of my ideas. Best regards Even

Beige G3 on-board ethernet problems

Hi all, Can please someone tell me if there are known issues with the beige G3 on-board Ethernet and SuSE 6.4 (kernel 2.2.14)? Better yet, where can I look for further info/docs? My problem is that under certain circumstances (for example nmap'ing that interface from another computer -but not every time-, sometimes just using the interface) the eth0 stops working, and then the computer often freezes shortly after and auto-restarts in a few minutes (-??- with dirty filesystem). No logs at all, even with tail -f /var/log/messages. I've also tried with another G3: same behaviour. The problem does not appear if I do the same tests on eth1 (Apple Fast Ethernet card -DEC chip 21140-, or Intel Pro100+), or if I use a blue/white G3 configured the same way. This is the setup (test machine; in production the services will be splitted on two computers): - G3/233, 192MB RAM (used two computers: same results), with a Apple Fast Ethernet PCI Card and/or a Intel EtherExpress Pro100+ PCI card. - SuSE 6.4 with current patches, kernel 2.2.14 - SuSEfirewall installed and working (NAT for internal LAN, blocking unused ports on internet interface) - postfix 1999/12/31-pl13 - cyrus imapd 1.6.24 (with cyrus sasl 1.5.24) - squid 2.3 stable4 + patches - *not* running telnet, ftp, bind, nscd, ssh, identd, http, portmap, nfs etc. etc. (only inetd) If I only use the two PCI cards (leaving on-board Ethernet disabled), everything is (seems to be...) fine: the G3 has just survived 7 consecutive nmap scans. After two weeks of tests I'm completely stuck (tried everything I know and looked through a lot of docs; also installed NetDrivers-2.1.6 from www.scyld.com, although I remember that on-board Ethernet support is compiled in the kernel)... any clues? thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post nicola

sax2 problem

How do I get more than 8 bit resolution? And how do I save the info I but in sax2? It seems that it is not able to save to the XF86Config file, it is not that I am unable to write in the code, but it should work. Also Can someone give me the correct name and spec of my video card I have a Powerbook (bronze) G3 400 (no firewire, but I have DVD) I think it is ATI rage (something) 8 Mb ram that should be able to run 32 but. I have been looked around at the Apple site, and it is informative as always. I have concluded that they only give their writers a picture of the product, then ask them to write the technical spec's. Emacs and Xemacs does not recognize Java code, it treats it like pure text (that¹s ok) but I was looking for an "intelligent" editor, that would recognize (some) errors. Joss, Thanks for your help. I read on one of the yaboot FAQs that kernel 2.2.15 or greater is required for Yaboot to work. Unfortunately, I have 2.2.14 (SuSE 6.4). I would like to use the latest kernel but I believe 2.4.0 is not ready for the PPC. What is the most recent kernel available for the PPC? Hi, I am preparing to use Japanese with SUSE and am finding the necessary packages to install. I have come across one that wants glibc to be installed but i see that SUSE has libc installed instead. Can I ignore the dependency or should I install glibc? If I install glibc will it cause havoc with libc? Will I even be able to have both on the same system? Joss, Can you explain how you got yaboot working? I have a B+W G3 with 2 hard drives. On my master drive I have OS9, OS X and Linux, I use my slave for back-up purposes. Installation problems

Hi, I have another question This one is regarding installation on my G4 This is the problem: I have a G4 (see spec. below) and I am unable to install This is what happens: I have prepared the SCSI disk for Linux and made a boot partition 30Mb and put the suseboot folder in it. I then choose the partition containing the suseboot folder and tries to startup the install by holding down the "C". The machine is trying to start up but the screen goes black and the machine does not respond any more, this happens if I hold down the "C" or not. This is what I think it can be: The machine is set up with SCSI and ATA The DVD is installed on ID 0 and the ATA is on ID 1 In the manual it states that there could be problems with the ATA setup, however I have tried everything I know (not very much :-) Can someone help? And also help with the scripts? It took me 1 hour to install SuSE PPC on my powerbook but the G4 have taken me over a week. Hi, If anyone succeeded installing XFree86 4.x on Apple FireWire iBook please share his wise experience. XFree86 3.3.6 work in frame buffer mode, 256 colors, but attempt to switch to XFree86 4.x with command switch2xf86-4 fails, or to say precisely, just nothing happens. Also, it would be nice to work in full graphic acceleration mode. I knew that Debian people somehow managed to get it work. Snippet from X86Config Debian attached. -- Hello, what do i have to do, to solve the known Keyboardproblem on my imac rev b with suse 6.4. Installed? Editing the XF86Conf does only help until the next reboot... Another problem is that i do not get my machine to boot from the partition i edited in the open firmware. Is it the missing backslash on my german keyboard? My partion table is: #6 swap #7 root #8 hfs #9 hfs+ (MacOS) The settings in the XF86Conf regarding the Framebufferdevice are not perfect. The screen is very slow. I copied a good working XF86Conf for the ATY Mach 64 wich i lost in between. Thanks in advance kai

sendmail woes

Hello, I have tried holding this request back but now beg you for your help :-) I want to get the simplest of sendmail configurations set up so I can use Mutt and fetchmail. I have a dialup 56k connection and an ISP that distributes my mail. I collect mail via pop3. My iMac is called 'linux'. For the past three weeks, I have looked everywhere on the web for clues on what to do, but nothing seems to work. So far, I can only get mail via Mutt's pop3 feature (not fetchmail) and sending mail returns the mail to me saying linux.local is not recognised. Using YaST, what settings do I have to change from a freshly installed SUSE 7.0? I really would like to get this over and done with. Thanks so much joss

How do I switch from bash to tcsh

Hi, I've just installed SuSE PPC 7.0 and everything seems to be working ok. However, creating a user seems to default to using the bash shell. I'm sure it's nice, but I prefer tcsh. Changing the shell under yast seems to indicate that tcsh is now the one being used, however, .cshrc isn't being executed and typical tcsh commands (like setenv) aren't recognized -> the error message seems to indicate that bash is still the current shell. I get the same results using chsh. Why can't I change to using tcsh? Thanks, Steve

USB audio (iSub) now works but internal speakers fail

hello, I now have the iSub usb woofer working on my iMac DV after rebuilding my 2.2.16 kernel with usb audio support. For some reason it wouldn't work when audio was a module (insmod audio; lsmod, but the driver didn't recognise it). Anyway, now the internal speakers don't work :-( and I'm wondering if there is a known fix for this. Or a good guess.
