Report on SFD 16th September, 2017. One week after association’s day, we had SFD. We were still excited and highly motivated. The city lent us a video projector because this way, I can share my screens with everybody present. The number of visitors was 33. There were already 4 people who sort of booked a session over the phone. 1. A lady has a MacBook and before jumping in at the deep end, wanted to learn more on Linux. She is a teacher and needed some coaching on administrative IT programs like LibreOffice. 2. A couple has 3 PC, two “old” ones and a new one. They wanted to get openSUSE installed. We could not because we do not have 32bit versions and also because their IT knowledge could not warrant such a change. 3. Another lady wanted to purchase a new pc. She had been advised to buy a Lenovo with Ubuntu, a 15” screen, 500 GB HD and 4 Gigs of RAM. I changed her vision for a HP with the double of all that and a 17” screen. She will purchase same and bring over for openSUSE installation. 4. We made 8 openSUSE Leap 42.3 upgrades. (VLC still giving trouble). Plus one complete reinstallation. 5. Oh, our Greek lady had an issue with her Yast update. All sorted out. 6. I had a few interesting debates on ODT, XML and Microsoft format of Office documents. This created a buzz because people suddenly discovered on how to use Linux with MS Office documents from a Windows partition. 7. We went into teaching some basics of openSUSE and also more elaborate matters on Concepts, advanced administration, cloning etc. 8. Strange issue: Around 4 visitors thought that Linux was something that can be uploaded straight in their mind. They thought that the learning was not from their end. We really had a lot of fun :D PS. We ended the evening at my step-daughter’s place who cooked for us. PS1. Report on Associations Day 9th September, 2017. As everything in France starts with food, we started the day with a big breakfast, not heavy but enough to keep going until lunch time J When we arrived on site, it was like a construction site, people with all sort of material. All that looked very promising and we were very excited about the day. Present: Laurence, Marilla, Nathalie, Morgan, Olivier and myself. We had others who came round for coffee and/or were busy on other stands ‘bees, repair café, ecology, hiking, etc. The organizers from the City have computed that the number of visitors was approximately 4500. I can vouch for this because we had ~30 visitors per hour and that for 8 hours. We printed 300 B5 brochures and had only a few left in the evening. We also had our 4G LTE Huawei router and some neighbors asked to free wifi… The memorable visitors were: 1. The first person who barged in was an entrepreneur willing to sell us banners et al. As we operate with 0€ budget, we politely invited him to visit he next door neighbors J 2. Three persons (two men and a lady) over the day, proposed to volunteer for our association. Meaning that the core is growing. That’s pretty good. 3. Two teachers were after DVDs and giveaways. 4. We had a couple of rain showers, but the crowd kept coming. Due to weather conditions, we sort of lost ~50 visitors who just walked pass every stand and not stopping L 5. As usual, we had the ad hoc geeks who acclaimed other Linux distributions but agreed to test openSUSE Leap 42.3, but one geek was sort of seeking Holy water to sprinkle over our stand :D 6. The mayor visited the stands (as each year), we chatted a bit, taboo subjects were budget, resources and bigger meeting rooms J 7. We also visited the other stands and found out that again this year, we were the only IT geeks from Normandie at this annual event in the capital of Normandie. 8. Most visitors promised to come and learn from our monthly insets After packing up, I invited the gang to an Alsatian restaurant. In a nutshell, we had a lot of fun! [opensuse-marketing] Getting Started With Linux Magazine

Hi all, Members of the openSUSE community have been working with Linux-Magzine.com to publish a special edition of a Getting Started With Linux magazine (cover attached). I am thrilled to inform you that this 100-page magazine featuring openSUSE Leap 42.3 will be available on newsstands throughout the globe over the coming months. The distribution of the magazines are expected to bring more openSUSE users to our community. You might see more asking questions about using openSUSE in the coming months even though the magazine does a great job of explaining the basics. The project has received 3,000 of these magazines to be used for various purposes like distributing at conferences. In addition to distributing some at conferences, we would like to also send a package to people who could distribute them to their local university, college, computer science class or Linux user group. There are 30 magazines in a pack and I can send you a package if you are willing to distribute it to one of the above mentioned target groups. If you are willing to do this, please reply with your full name, mailing address and phone number so I send you a package. I would like to thank the people in our community who helped to make the Getting Started With Linux magazine possible, and thank you to the community members who are helping to bring openSUSE to users throughout the world.
