[opensuse-marketing] Calling all coders!

In case you haven't heard of codeacademy.com I want to just make a quick blurb. Basically it is a simple, hand on way to learn programming quickly and easilly. Check it out. To the coders, though I don't know if helping to create new courses would benefit our community directly I wanted to encourage anybody who is willing to contribute. Currently they don't have very much on the various languages. I'm doing the Javascript tract right now, but wish they had a C++ tract. This is the sort of resource I've been hoping for a long time for. If you are so inclined, please help make more courses since this is really a fantastic resource for people like me who have wanted to contribute to code but haven't the experience or knowledge. [opensuse-marketing] openSUSE popularity rises

Just wanted to mention quickly that openSUSE popularity continues to rise on Facebook. Our Facebook group page [1] has seen an increase of about 700 new members since late December. And the huge number of people there is proving to be a valuable cache of information we are able to use to further our marketing efforts. Keep up the great work, people! SUSE marketing really liked the article and they told me they can help me get it in magazines in a large number of countries if we can get it translated. Hi everybody, as you probably already know[1], we are working on preparations for this years openSUSE Conference, which will happen in my home town - Prague. If you are excited about the conference and want to help and and want to know what's going on, you should be subscribed to the conference mailing list[2]. That's for general introduction. Now to the point. How can you help... If you take a peek at archive of openSUSE Conference mailing list, you'll see, that we were discussing central theme and motto of this years conference. Final decision will take place on Friday, but you still have some time to suggest something. I'll collect every suggested motto and present it on the meeting and we will choose from them (so deadline for suggestions is this Friday noon CEST). As we need to move forward, we also need to form CfP committee asap. On Friday we will have a main theme, we will do another announcement and as we are getting closer on finalization of venue as well, soon we will be able to announce CfP as well. And for that, we need CfP committee. What would you do? You'll read proposals and help to select the best of them in accordance with our conference motto (which we will have soon :-D ). So if you want to be part of that, put your name/nick (ideally with link to your personal page) to the wiki [3]! Overall, we've got a lot of things going on right now and you can expect a lot of happening soon. [opensuse-marketing] Enterprise level collaboration system.

Please pardon the cross list post. For a while now I have been attempting to drum up a small team to create a functional demo of the Kablink (OSS Novell Vibe) collaboration technology. I was reluctant to attempt drumming up any support or publicity until I could clearly show how it could be done to benefit our community. However, attempting this in relative secrecy hasn't worked. Also, it has been brought to my attention that open/SuSE has become a largely ruby house. Thus the Java its mostly written in may not be compatible. Also a known issue with Kablink is its complexity, and ugly interface. I had a meeting with a manager from Novell to see about getting assistance in implementing Kablink for us, and he agreed to assist us with the project. However, I am not saavy enough to do much with it. I have also been evaluating another similar technology called Cyn.in from Cynapse, which is written largely in Python and has an excellent interface. This is perhaps a more viable technology as I believe we have more Python devs than Java ones. So now I am approaching you to discuss if you feel as I do that we could benefit from a solution like this. Also, I feel that we need to make sure that the technologies our project uses must be OSS seeing as I know we have been using some collaboration platform that is not Free. I ask that you take a look at the Kablink and Cyn.in and imagine the possibilities. I think that many of the issues facing our project could be relieved with a unified collaboration platform. This platform could supplant some of our current technologies, while integrating with others.
