Over the weekend, I met the president of a LUG in Michigan while I was in Indiana. He expressed a past interest in getting someone to come to one of his LUG meeting to talk about openSUSE. Upon closer examination, I realized it wasn't financially feasible to make a trip to Michigan for an evening meeting (thus also having to stay overnight) as his LUG has only about 15 members. And I started to think about who might be closer that can go to that specific city. (Ann Arbor) That size is typical for a large number of LUGs out there. I suggested perhaps we can do an online webinar of some sort, and he liked that idea. The more I thought about this since then, the more I think we should organize a formal webinar program here at openSUSE. We can use these webinars to give focused presentations to LUG groups. We can also meet with more than one LUG group at a time, thus covering greater distances in the same amount of time. We could, and should, also use the same concept and service to create openSUSE tutorials and other online presentation events that appeal to people beyond just LUGs. For example, if we launch a new product/service/update, we can host a Q&A webinar for journalists. A nice online OBS webinar tutorial also comes to mind. There's plenty of commercial software out there that we can use and not have to worry about hosting the software. Some of us have already done meetings via Skype to LUGs. But a) some people have an objection to using non-free software for webinars, and b) those services can cost money, although they provide a hosting service, thus taking away our own need to provide infrastructure. I think we should actively look at viable open source options and address the feasbility of hosting it within our own infrastructure. And then begin a formal scheduling strategy of webinar events to promote as well as reaching out to LUGs around the world to invite them to request a "virtual" guest speaker at their next meetings. These meetings/tutorials offer the benefit of live interaction with the community as well as a way to archive our sessions for those who are not able to attend live. Thoughts, folks? In case you haven't heard of codeacademy.com I want to just make a quick blurb. Basically it is a simple, hand on way to learn programming quickly and easilly. Check it out. To the coders, though I don't know if helping to create new courses would benefit our community directly I wanted to encourage anybody who is willing to contribute. Currently they don't have very much on the various languages. I'm doing the Javascript tract right now, but wish they had a C++ tract. This is the sort of resource I've been hoping for a long time for. If you are so inclined, please help make more courses since this is really a fantastic resource for people like me who have wanted to contribute to code but haven't the experience or knowledge. [opensuse-marketing] openSUSE popularity rises

Just wanted to mention quickly that openSUSE popularity continues to rise on Facebook. Our Facebook group page [1] has seen an increase of about 700 new members since late December. And the huge number of people there is proving to be a valuable cache of information we are able to use to further our marketing efforts. Keep up the great work, people! Hi everybody, as you probably already know[1], we are working on preparations for this years openSUSE Conference, which will happen in my home town - Prague. If you are excited about the conference and want to help and and want to know what's going on, you should be subscribed to the conference mailing list[2]. That's for general introduction. Now to the point. How can you help... If you take a peek at archive of openSUSE Conference mailing list, you'll see, that we were discussing central theme and motto of this years conference. Final decision will take place on Friday, but you still have some time to suggest something. I'll collect every suggested motto and present it on the meeting and we will choose from them (so deadline for suggestions is this Friday noon CEST). As we need to move forward, we also need to form CfP committee asap. On Friday we will have a main theme, we will do another announcement and as we are getting closer on finalization of venue as well, soon we will be able to announce CfP as well. And for that, we need CfP committee. What would you do? You'll read proposals and help to select the best of them in accordance with our conference motto (which we will have soon :-D ). So if you want to be part of that, put your name/nick (ideally with link to your personal page) to the wiki [3]! Overall, we've got a lot of things going on right now and you can expect a lot of happening soon.
