I'd like to give a warm welcome to Alexandre as Brasilian Ambassador! I'm appending as introduction his interview, Andreas * What have you done already for openSUSE? In my state (Bahia/Brazil) i have a big case of implantation Opensuse. In 2 years are installed 1400 desktops. These desktops are migrated from Windows (in varios versions like 95, 98 and XP). In sequence, I instruct many employees how to use this distribution in many cities of this state, including Salvador, Jequié, Alagoinhas and Vitória da Conquista. * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Distribution of medias, presentation in Foruns and other events and participation in FLISOL (Festival Latinoamericano de Instalação de Software Livre - Latinamerica festival of Free Software Installation). In this events, installations are realized in desktops from people with interest in use of linux. * Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE Yes, a have participate from other events, but not in legal representation. I observe that Opensuse is a great distribution, with advantages and disadvantages in comparison with other distributions, like ubuntu and fedora, but, in general, Opensuse have very many features. However, I expect migrate windows users to linux, because I believe that is more easy convert other linux users to Opensuse only showing advantages from our desktop. * What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE? The powerfull and stability. Desktops must be easy and have more funcionalities without forget the stability, confiability and speed. Opensuse is only linux desktop that have all of this features. * Why do you love to do this I believe in free software and in a near future proprietary software will be extinct. I want make part from this history. * How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of experienc. I am a Infrastrutucre Support Analist. I have 10 years from experience with Linux like a System Administrator * The ambassador program is currently pretty informal and we expect the ambassadors to organize themselves. So, please coordinate with other ambassadors on the opensuse-marketing mailing list. All right. No problem * Also, as an ambassador, you're the expert on your country/region, so please share on the opensuse-marketing mailing list a bit about the openSUSE and the FOSS community in your country/region, e.g. what are their needs. My region have some people working with FOSS, and like I said, Opensuse is the best linux distribution, however, many other peoples dont know. I want contribute to disseminate this distribution. The more needs is materials to publish Opensuse distribution and support to make events. [opensuse-marketing] What is openSUSE and who does it target?

This morning, prior to the meeting in #opensuse-marketing, Bryen, Matt, some others and myself were talking about some of openSUSE's messaging; a discussion I feel should be taken onto the mailing list :) The original question I posed was: Who is openSUSE competing with? To which Bryen replied "Ubuntu for now", in my humblest of opinions, I feel this is slightly off-mark. It relies on Ubuntu converting Windows and Mac OS X users and then somehow wooing their users away. Reviewing Ubuntu's messaging, an end-user would likely never realize: what Linux is or that there are different flavors of Linux out there! Digging into Ubuntu's messaging they *never* refer to Linux as far as I can tell, but rather pitch the "ease of computing", etc. Additionally, Ubuntu really stresses a GNOME-centric desktop, which means one of openSUSE's core strength's (a great KDE setup) is moot. I don't claim to have answers or any good suggestions, I'm just curious about our current marketing messaging and how it addresses non-openSUSE users. p.s. when is Novell hiring a replacement for Zonker :P Cheers, -R. Now you won't miss a thing! :-) We had a great meeting this week and talked about a variety of topics, including results of our 11.3 Launch campaign, organization of the Ambassadors Program, and discussion of other marketing campaigns including OBS and Smeegol. Thanks to Carlos and Dominian who have volunteered to drive the Ambassadors meeting this Tuesday (more information to follow soon from them) and Tyler for taking the lead for the Smeegol campaign. For those of you who are interested in doing something with Marketing team but haven't found your particular areas of interest yet, AJ and I will be creating an open jobs page in the next few days that you will be able to browse through. One job we will definitely add to the list soon is volunteers to maintain the openSUSE Shop. Interested? Let us know! And folks, if you haven't heard the news yet, we have a new member to our marketing team. Let's welcome newly-appointed Community Manager Jos Poortvliet to the team. He's going to be busy with lots of community building stuff, but we're not going to let him slip away from our team, right? We'll find something for him to do! I just mailed something to the project mailing list on how to announce team meetings and have a related topic for the marketing team as well: How to announce conferences, tradeshows and other events? Here's a first suggested howto - what are your thoughts on this? = Trade Shows and Conferences = * Create a blog entry announcing the event * Add an entry to http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Ambassadors_events * Get the event in the calendar on news.o.o - this way the openSUSE Weekly News Team will add it to their calendar as well (TBD: OWN Team, correct? Should I name somebody here?) * Tell the openSUSE Weekly News Team about the event: - First way in advance: Who's participating, what's happening, how people can get involved. - Again, once a week before the event: Who's participating, what's happening, any social events, how people can get involved. * After the event: Blog about the event, share some stuff on the opensuse- marketing mailing list What's missing? What should be done differently? At the end of October, we have the openSUSE Conference http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference . The Call for Papers ends on the 31st of July. If enough people come, I'd like to organize a meeting of ambassadors. Who from the ambassador team plans to come and visit the conference? Do you have any ideas or topics to discuss during such a meeting? Team, I'd like all of you to give a friendly welcome to Marco. I let him introduce himself with the answers to the questions I gave him... He also has a question for all of us on writing an article (see below), Andreas ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have a couple of questions for you: * What have you done already for openSUSE? I started to help in the italian wiki. I found a lot of pages to be translated and some others to be fixed and again others to be reviewed. A lot of works to do there. And a solid and translated wiki will help a lot. Joyned marketing and wiki mailing list. I started to explain a first approach to openSUSE in my courses and presentations and promoting it. * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? I collaborate for a big community(lifetech.org) of specialists searching new systems to help the rehab of disabled people. My work is to find new ways based on Open source/Linux program/systems. I often present Linux new approaches in our meetings. Next step will be OpenSUSE. Improving the use of OpenSUSE in my regional LUG. You can't believe that but we have sometimes some old people. Connect it more with the FOSS Community. I would like to ask you and someone of the staff to write an article for our web free magazine published by infomedia about openSUSE, and better some specific use of it. Improve the connection with other italian magazines. Listen the experiences and new ideas of the other ambassador. I'm in the marketing mailing list. * Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE? Yeah, i'm doing that any time i can. * What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE? In one second i would say The quality of yours work. * Why do you love to do this? For some reasons but basically for the love of Open Source and the quality of OpenSUSE' project. * How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of experience? I started to use Linux about 8 years ago trying Gentoo, Mandriva, Ubuntu, and finally openSUSE near 2 years ago. Recently i started helping at wisearth project and helping translate it. Don't read this: I was asked to help in the translation and promoting of Linux Mint...i received other requests. I will study more OpenSUSE and want to approach next level. The ambassador program is currently pretty informal and we expect the ambassadors to organize themselves. We partecipate often at the Linux meeting, but instead of seat near the speakers we would love to seat shoulder to shoulder with the people that listen the speak. Seating there permits us to listen the pulse of the Foss Community. Gadgets help yes but we can't base our program only of that. Some days after the meeting gadgets can be forgotten.
