[opensuse-factory] acpid requires systemd?

Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. Hi: Will be cool if rpmlint could warn when upstream packages attempt to use the -ansi gcc option because it inhibits usage of gcc builtin functions while optimizing (list here --> http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Other-Builtins.html#Other-Builtins) most recently it caught my attention that it also disables the new "optimize-strlen" pass in gcc 4.7, in particular this: "for hosted compilations where stpcpy is available in the runtime and headers provide its prototype, e.g. void foo (char *a, const char *b, const char *c, const char *d) { strcpy (a, b); strcat (a, c); strcat (a, d); } can be optimized into: void foo (char *a, const char *b, const char *c, const char *d) { strcpy (stpcpy (stpcpy (a, b), c), d); } " when -ansi is used and (defined(_GNU_SOURCE) || (_XOPEN_SOURCE >= 700 || _POSIX_C_SOURCE >= 200809L)) is false, there is no stpcpy prototype and hence no optimization. I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? [opensuse-factory] Splitting deb?

Hi. I saw that Marguerite has added another two Debian packages to the "deb" openSUSE package. As a user of and contributor to that package, may I suggest that we stop that (and instead do the opposite, split the package)? I don't know what the historic reasons were for collecting multiple independent source packages in one RPM. But by now this is a very big and complicated spec file which makes maintenance somewhat hard, especially when multiple people are working on it. It also makes it hard to use parts of the packaging for other purposes (e.g. Fedora already has a dpkg package, but no debhelper or devscripts package. The current deb package doesn't work for Fedora and adapting it would make the spec file even bigger [it needs overrides for the automatic perl dependencies and other changes]) If there is no opposition I would volunteer to do all the work of splitting the deb package in its components and submit them to Factory (Probably something that would be targeted for 12.3, not 12.2?). Opinions? Would it make sense to file a bug about this? Or a fate entry? Hello all, I have been having a problem in which the installer with default kernel freezes when "Searching for Linux Partitions" during the probing. This has been happening since 12.2 M1 - M3. To resolve this I add "acpi=off" to the boot options. This should not happen with the default kernel. Should I add this as a bug under "Installation" or "Kernel" in Bugzilla? -- Cheers! [opensuse-factory] 12.2 beta VirtualBox problem

12.2 beta2 updated with Yast Online Update yesterday Hi everyone I have a problem with 12.2 on VirtualBox. The 4.1.16 that came with 12.2 gave a very large virtual text screen (the ones that have to have scrollbars) which is really annoying when working in a console in text mode. I removed 4.1.16 and installed 4.1.18. Same problem. The graphics modes are fine, it's just the cli. I have tried with and without the guest additions. Both versions of vbox work as expected on 12.1 Any ideas how to fix this? [opensuse-factory] OpenTTD: An open source clone of Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe

Dear openSUSE Factory Team OpenTTD is now for some years completely independent from the original TTD with its own graphics, sound and music. Therefore I would like to submit the package to openSUSE Factory. The brief description from http://www.openttd.org/en/about reads: OpenTTD is an open source simulation game based upon the popular Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features. Together with the package openttd, there are two data packages and one building tool: - openttd with subpackages openttd-dedicated (no SDL dependency) and openttd-data (noarch) - openttd-opengfx (required graphics) - openttd-openmsx (optional midi music) - nml (building tool for opengfx) (all 4 packages use license GPL-2.0) There is a third data package openttd-opensfx, but this does not fulfill the license requirements and so can't go to Factory (Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0, which means basically no commercial use). This is no big deal, like music sound is just optional and you can easily be downloaded ingame via the content service. Players get notified if they start openttd the first time. Some upstream developers of these dependent packages are also member of the OpenTTD dev team. This ensures that dependencies always work together. Also upstream has a very professional release workflow, which makes it easily maintainable for distro packager. There is a yearly major release on April 1st (no fool) and around 4 to 5 minor security/bugfix releases (http://security.openttd.org). Also there are security patches for older major release branches to support LTS distros, which do not update main releases during same distro. Usually it is very recommend to use the same versions as upstream to keep compatible with Network Multiplayer Games. But as openSUSE has a very short lifetime, this should be no issue. Development project is games. openttd is part of included there for ages. In order to ensure openttd and its support packages build on Factory, I created a temporary project: home:openttdcoop:Factory There you can find the 4 packages I submit to Factory. I heavily reworked the packages to make it "Factory capable" and didn't yet submit those changes to games. (review welcome) Currently, I don't submit testing releases (beta or RC) to games and keep those in home:openttdcoop. If openttd will be accepted in Factory, this might change. My next steps are now waiting for some comments here (around a week). If there won't be any arguments against submitting, I will submit openttd, openttd-opengfx, openttd-openmsx and nml from games to Factory. [opensuse-factory] Thermal issues with kernel 3.4 (64bits)

Hi, I just wanted to check if I am the only one that has thermal issues with the 3.4 kernel ? I see the following behavior : 1) Load the notebook with a gcc acitivity until all processors are 100% load 2) Shortly after you get notifications that a thermal event is reached (CPU's > 100 degrees) 3) Kernel reacts and shutdown the system. Strangely enough the same task with an 3.3 kernel can easily survive and also under Windows I do not have any problems. Checking bugs.kernel.org I found something with regards to this effect and they suggested to load the thermal module with nocrt=1 so that the activity on the first trippoint is not initiated. This indeed helps a lot and it seems that even with a high load the notebook doesn't get that hot. Also no shutdown is initiated. I also tried kernel 3.5 from Kernel:HEAD and this one has the same effect with the temperature. However using the nocrt=1 option, I get a different undesired effect. Once the temperature gets to a certain point, the kernel lowers the speed of the CPU's to the lowest point. Once the CPU's are cool'ed down, this maximum speed should be increased again. With kernel 3.4 this works as indicated. With kernel 3.5 however this maximum speed is not changed anymore until a reboot. Already in openSUSE 12.1 the fam service does not work. This remains the same in 12.2. The family of courier packages depends on this service. The alternative is to use dovecot, which does not need the fam service. So I propose to drop the family of courier and fam packages from the openSUSE distribution. -- fr.gr. [opensuse-factory] Force disable LVDS Downclock on intel graphics?

Hello, I am running Tumbleweed off openSUSE 12.1. In the past i used "i915.lvds_downclock=1" as a power saving measure on my laptop, but realised that it caused annoying screen flickering and made it impossible to use an external display. So i disabled this option and have had a functioning laptop since then. However since i ran zypper dup last week and updated the kernel to 3.4.6-34, this display instability has returned. When i plug in an external monitor via HDMI (or VGA) i can sometimes use it for a couple of minutes before the graphics card starts switching the output between displays and flickering, rendering it impossible to use. It is often worse if i only use the external display (i.e. disable laptop display). I suspect this is due to some kernel change which has allowed the lvds downclock power saving measure to work (i.e. without being forced). Can anyone confirm this? Also can i force disabling this option by entering in "i915.lvds_downclock=0" at the kernel line? [opensuse-factory] Installing openSUSE 12.2 RC on Zotac ZBOX computer not working?

This is a bit of an odd one. I've tried to install both openSUSE 12.1 and 12.2 on my Zotac ZBOX (Atom D510 1.6GHz, with 3GB RAM, Intel GMA 3150 video). The ISO starts up and I see the initial loading screen. If I follow the console output it gets right up to launching the YaST installer, and the screen blanks with a cursor flashing in the top left. It just stays here... the YaST Installer never starts. What/where can I look to see what's going on here? The console output during the startup isn't too helpful. No errors show up there (at least not that I can see). i can't even see anything helpful or useful to put into a bug report (if that's even what is needed here). Generally this computer is very Linux compatible... and other distros will install just fine... it's only openSUSE that fails to make a go of it. Hi, is there any reason why we use libcdio git snapshot in 12.2? For Factory it's totally fine but for 12.2 RC1 (almost RC2)? Hi 12.2 RC1 with LXDE After certain processes lxdm runs close to 100% cpu and effectively hangs the machine. I have to have another root terminal open to kill it but it takes over 5 minutes to do so. The events seem random but are normally to do with creating LDAP users. Can anyone help or help me trace this? Hi Werner, as a workaround I used the version of pgf from their website and it worked. http://sourceforge.net/projects/pgf/develop another issue I hit is with bibtex8... the texlive-bibtex8-bin package shall install texlive-bibtex8 too, otherwise no working bibtex8. Seems like openSUSE doesn't bother to include sources anymore for building their packages. Since no one seem to care about the bug in the spec-file for samba-3.6.3 causing it's build to fail, the fact that perl5.14.2 doesn't build is become evidence of a pattern. The spec file has a requirement on a package 'db-devel', yet there is no such package. Presumably it would include the necessary /usr/include/db.h file that defines the dbm_open call needed for perl5 to build as well. Often wondered why /usr/bin's libs aren't in /usr/lib64, ~half the time.... So not only is a 75% majority of packages being required to use a "non-native path", but also of the remaining 25%, 35% of them are in the "wrong" dir. One of the assumptions, it seems, is that "../lib" from a bindir => the lib dir for the bin dir. So...why not have "/usr32/{bin,lib} hold the 32-bit progs?...or for that matter. why not make /usr or /usr32 the default dirs (on x86-64) for the arch dependent stuff? or /usr & /usr64 on a 32-bit machine)... put arch-specific stuff in /usr, (/usr[64|32]). For anything that is the same, either soft links or migrate it to /usr/share ??? As it is, I'm never quite sure if the right binary is in the right place. Hello all, I'm using Tumbleweed and Packman Tumbleweed. Hallo, At the moment we have two different init systems - the previous old sysvinit and the new one systemd, which is the default one since 12.1. As my hackweek project is very connected into boot, I've discovered this situation ends in a fact that we do not have a good support for sysvinit neither systemd. Few examples: * there is a lot of overlapping between sysv scripts we still use and systemd - systemd-modules-load.service versus /etc/init.d/boot.loadmodules from mkinitrd noone catched because LSB scripts "just works" with systemd * on the other hand Marcus Meissner found several issues in sysvinit support shows a big lack of a testing, because systemd is the default one I do not believe that extending the "transition period" for one, or more openSUSE releases will make anything better. In fact it will extend the painfull perior when systemd-lovers will be upset by a taking a care about the old sysvinit way and sysvinit lovers will feels like second-class citizens in the new world. And that's a perfect example of no-win situation [1]. Therefor I am convinced we as openSUSE community have to 1.) decide 2.) make the winner system the default one and the best one 3.) in case there will be a strong community willing to support the second system from the contest, let invent a way how they can do that. With all great features we have (zypp, OBS) it won't be so hard. I am not sure is how to make such decision in openSUSE community. Would we use FATE voting for that? Or find some dictator/board who will decide? BTW: I hope that you will discuss how many init system we need and in case one is the answer, how to make the decision. Having the last flamewar [2] in a mind, I'd like to have a fire suit. [opensuse-factory] Check-ins of openSUSE:12.2:Update vs pass through devel projects

Hi all, I just realize that some packages apparently are entering openSUSE:12.2:Update without passing through their devel projects / openSUSE:Factory. Whereas I of course see that some devel projects move further compared to the freeze in 12.2, I still think it is absolutely crucial that the devel-projects receive the fixes as well, so that they can also enter openSUSE:Factory. I did see in the past that patches went to a release, never did it in Factory and Release+1 had the bug back... things, that could easily be avoided with some minimal 'follow the rules' processes. Important in this case of course would be that the Maintenance team and the package maintainers / devel project maintainers stay in contact about updates... I think, that's something that can be expected. Just looking for thoughts. It's not about blaming or flaming. I'm ONLY interested in improving the process! (This is also why I don't want to give references to any particular incident.. the people affected have been informed by means of bugzilla.. this is sufficient). What packages don't need to have rpmbuild installed in the buildroot in order to build their RPM's? Unless you show evidence to the contrary, I would submit that rpmbuild is currently used to build rpm's as part of the OBS. I don't think there has ever been any question whether or not rpmbuild was used or supported. The issue is about what is already installed in your build environment. [Open]SuSE, if you remember, rarely used BuildRequires before suse10. Separate "-devel" packages weren't widely used if at all sometime before 10 or 9. It was assumed they were included by installing the product. Only by stripping out what packages normally include not including what the original "product/project" produces with it's configure and make do you run into to these problems. For that matter, it used to be that doc packages were usually not separate either. If OSC/OSB is required to build a distro, why is it not included in the shipped distro binaries and source rpms? What version of OSC/OSB is required to build each release: 11.1 => 12.2? Is this documented and made available for each release? If you don't ship the tools on the distro disks, then you are committing to keeping them online. You may not support SuSE 9.0, However, I don't believe the requirements for supplying the tools and sources to build that release expire -- as the GPL doesn't say that sources to binaries can be unavailable if it is more than 'n' years past their initial release date. That wouldn't be in the spirit of including (or making available) all the sources and tools necessary to build something. At what point did openSuse stop shipping complete sources to build the distro, with the distro? I.e. at what point did you require obs/osc to be the build environment? I'm trying to install a rolling openSUSE under VMware workstation 8.0.4 . I did a fresh default desktop installation of openSUSE 12.1 with KDE. Updated to the latest patch level using Yast update, and switched to Tumbleweed following the discussion on http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Tumbleweed After reboot, I am unable to open a desktop environment. The display drops back to KDM login screen after a login. I can login from terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1). From /var/log/messages it appears that this is caused by "no mtrr found" (I have 3D acceleration off in VMware). Before I start digging into the hardware details of VMware I would like to know if you guys can help me out with this one. Note that for the 12.1 installation I used the prebuilt Open Virtual Machine Tools guest kernel module rather than build the kernel module from the VMware tools source. Thanks for your ideas. p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib64/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: /usr/lib64/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory --- I noticed this in my boot log -- I didn't try to build the package, it just came this way! But: I have two copies of this package: gnome-keyring-3.2.1-2.3.1.x86_64.rpm gnome-keyring-3.2.1-2.6.1.x86_64.rpm The older package has the file, the newer one does not... [opensuse-factory] Firefox in RC1 and Portuguese language

Earlier today I installed 12.2 RC1 using the LIVE KDE CD Build #53. This contains Firefox v13.0.1 (and Firefox is the browser I have used for "time immemorial"). When I started for the first time this copy of Firefox, it came up with the message that there was an update to the Brazilian Portuguese Language pack. I do not use any other language other than UK English. And yet everytime I use the openSUSE version of Firefox - OR Thunderbird for that matter - I get this message that there is an upgrade to the Brazilian Portuguese language available! To make it worse, when I look in the Add-ons for Firefox - AND Thunderbird - I see that ALL other languages are listed in the Add-ons! (This is not something which has suddenly come up in RC1 - it's been going on since the beginning of 12.1 as I can recall.) Why is this so?
