[opensuse-factory] issues with command-not-found speed

Hello! Yesterday I have found out that from time to time, when I type a typo, it takes a huge amount of time until a "command of found message" appears and I can continue my work. Now I am able to reproduce it every time on my rc1 machine: > time sl bash: sl: command not found real 0m1.289s user 0m0.228s sys 0m0.040s Typing "echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" enables me to reproduce it every time (not doing it means that it happens at random). I am quite sure that our command-not-found package is to blame. I do not know how come it is that slow (I have only some five repositories defined) but it kind of drives me mad. So first - could you tell me a way to disable this functionality? (Commenting out the last line in /etc/bash_command_not_found does not seem to help.) And then, are there any known issues like that? I would like to see this problem fixed but I am afraid we might find out that we simply cannot do any better with Python. [opensuse-factory] Plan for 11.2?

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a plan for the 11.2 distribution? It's not when it's available but more what Novell want's to achieve with it. There are several important areas that I would like to help out with: 1. vastly reduced size of the core distro and easy setup for addons. Take out all but core KDE (and Gnome, but I'm a KDE'er so....). 2. mobility. Moving between networks, WLAN, LAN, GPRS , Bluetooth ++. Suspend/Resume, auto setup of VPN when moving outise the home LAN. Roaming profile/autosyncing of data with server with Unison , iFolder or similar. 3. syncing data with mobile phones 4. VPN client and server config. If so, choose one VPN server variant and support it 100%. (I like OpenVPN :-) ) 5. Home. Easy home server setup in one Yast module for useability. Fileserver, printer server, music server, movie server, picture server. 6. Connectivity from different types of clients, especially Upnp and DLNA compatibility. Windows, Mac and Linux client access to printer and file of cource and also wizards or simmilar to aid users in getting connected on the client machines. (Yes this might involve windows/mac/openSolaris SW) 7. media syncing with hanheld devices like iPod's, media phones, Creative ZEN. Also conversion of media to the hanhelds preferred format without the user needing to set up a complex structure. 8. officially supported game archive, maybe also with commercial games available like Opera/flash etc. is now available. 9. availability on new platforms. Specific focus on netbooks. 10. Default media made for USB key as well as DVD. 11. a standard yast module for server setup of net install of machines. This will aid in testing when there is a lot of machine variants to test. Easy restore to original config would be good also. (All server based :-) ) I have 15+ different computeres that I can test with , but it's to much work going back and forth now so I just use 2. Of course, if I do not make any sense (which often happens) I will be glad to discuss the points. And again, these are all parts I will gladly assist in testing. If some of it is made in Python I will try to assist with code also, but be warned. It's better to keep me as tester! After installing a package why not ask if the user wants to install or remove more packages before bringing up the YaST2 Writing the system configuration? This would save a lot of time and make things faster when multiple uses of Software Management is going to happen I would think. Hello, I provide a driver update for EFIKA PPC users. Recently a new feature was introduced to the installer, which now checks for an .asc file for the dud. How can I create one? Using 'insecure=1' is a bit annoying workaround, just as getting questioned about it during installation... Stano asked for feedback on the Yast autoinstal module. Her it goes. I don't get it. It sets up a ftp/http/nfs share and that's it. I don't get any documentation except for the help buttons in the module and those does not give out much. In the normal "Help" function on the start menu there is nothing except standard KDE information.( in khelpcenter) Going in to yast i find the two SUSE documentation modules and add those susehelp_en-2007.08.22-80.46 and susehelp-2007.08.22-80.46. Should not those be installed by default? There were no susehelp modules installed. But still no suse help in khelpcenter even after restarting the app. No new items to index. now checking the/usr/share/doc/packages/susehelp/README. Adds Apache and folow "How to start: just point your browser to http://localhost/susehelp/" and gets a 404.... No information on how it's ment to be used on the booting client is given in the yast module. Do I need a boot disk? If so , then there definately should be a wizzard assisting with that. It definately does not set up a network boot as I was expecting. there is no atftp or tftp server set up. I would like to "Press F12 for network boot" and install from there. We use this at work in conjunction with autoyast and it's fabulous. but horribly hard to set up and maintain. I also checked in on the Autoyast yast module. That does still not set up anything but the autoyast file as far as I could find out. It does not have any tftp integration and no integration with the installserver as far as I can see. Sorry that I did not test teis earlier and I do not think it looks usable for anyone but hardcore users. Ok......even though there were some dependency issues, I updated KDE 4.1 to 4.2 beta 2. There is indeed some things we've asked for included, but still not "there" yet. I'm still looking for bugs so will report back after playing some more with it. I will mention one major error is that gl screen savers with nVidia video, maybe other video, display in a small box in the upper left corner of the screen, with the rest of the screen in white. This is most annoying as it's what happened in the beta of 11.0. I didn't get it with KDE 3.5.10 on 11.1 so I have to assume it's a KDE 4.1 and 4.2 bug. I would like to know what the plans are for PulseAudio in KDE4. From my just installed 11.1 experience... - I know PulseAudio was enabled only for Gnome in 11.0... I *think* it was going to be used also for KDE in 11.1 but never followed the story. - Uhm, I have just installed 11.1 with KDE4 and I have not kmix... I have no mixer at all!! Well, that probably means it is using PulseAudio... let's see, yes pulseaudio is in the list of running processes... I suppose I must find the specific mixer to be able to set the volume of my speakers, it will be the Gnome one or there is one specific for KDE? - I don't find any mixer... and if I look is the sound preferences of KDE the first preference for everything is my SB Live!, the second my HDA codec and the last one PulseAudio. That means PulseAudio is running but not used by KDE? Well, I suppose there is a good cause for PulseAudio to be the last preference by default, I'm not going to change that. But if my desktop isn't going to use PulseAudio I can just uninstall it, any other app that could use PulseAudio for sure also supports ALSA directly. - Ok, zypper rm pulseaudio... what?? Ok, seems libesd0 requires esound-daemon, provided by pulseaudio-esound-compat that requires pulseaudio. libes0 is required by some packages I really want (libao to put an example). It seems it's difficult to delete all this pulseaudio/esd thing... why? I'm using KDE, not Gnome. Should not libesd0 just "recommend" instead of "require" esound-daemon?? Ok, that's what I thought while trying to understand the situation. So... I missed something? Is really pulseaudio being installed (and runned) in KDE4 installations but KDE4 not using it? How I'm supposed to set my volume? There should be a KDE-pulseaudio-mixer? What are the plans for 11.2? Hello I have installed the Suse 11.1 DVD iso 32 bit system. On performing a subsequent boot from power up , the message " Graphical initialisation failed", appears on the console- then proceeds to a command line boot up. At the end of the boot sequence, I have to perform a line based login/password and then issue "startx". After that, it performs perfectly. I'd like seeing 2 things mostly to do: - when you click on a downloaded rpm from dolphin you get dependency errors even if the dependencies are in your enabled repository..so you have to install deps via zypper/yast and then click on the rpm file. This should is not very easy for the end user...especially if he comes from ubuntu where gdebi automatically handles this kind of situation. -kernel 2.6.28 is almost released but 11.2 will probably ship with >=2.6.29. Kernel 2.6.29 will bring kernel mode setting (flicker free boot with support for wide screen resolutions, better suspend). Fedora has a new implementation of graphical boot, that uses kernel mode settings; it's called plymouth and it's already working in fedora 10. Ubuntu is considering to switch to it for the next version. I think that opensuse should think about it too. Devs, Last post on 11.1. Just a bit of feedback and warm hearted thanks. I competed 11.1 install at 3:00 am yesterday on what was a Perfect Install on the same hardware we did Beta5 on. Other than needing to reopen: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=445602 and chasing down a bug with the nut ups file/run permissions that are preventing it from running (all normal nits), 11.1 installed Perfectly! [opensuse-factory] Bug in partitioner for 11.1 installation

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to report problems with the 11.1 installation, but here I go: I'm just installing openSuSE 11.1, and the partition table displayed during installation is wrong. In the graphical installer, I am shown a couple of partitions that do not exist, and existing partitions are shown with wrong sizes. A "parted" called on the command line at the same time shows the correct set-up. Since there is data on some of the partitions, I did not proceed with the installation. Has anyone seens this problem, and is there a way to fix it? Hi, FYI, the current 2.6.27.8-1.1 from Factory causes excessive filling of /var/log/messages with ATA messages, at least on my system with a quite popular ASUS P5B mainboard. Using the slightly older (!) kernel version from Kernel:HEAD fixes that problem. [opensuse-factory] Option on 11.2 to forbid architectures.

I could not seem to find openFATE to try and add this. But I would really like an option to forbid an architecture. I find that zypper still tries to put i586.rpm on my 64 bit systems. I do not mind the -32 packages, but I really want to forbid the use of any i586.rpm. I would like to get a FATE request and see responses. [opensuse-factory] How to check how a font is rendered?

I'm having a problem with the font rendering with my new installation of 11.1. It looks like antialiasing isn't disabled when BYTECODE_BW_MAX_PIXEL says it should. But I would like to be sure... there is any command that, having for input font and size, returns if it's using antialiasing, hinting (from the font or autohinting), etc.? SuSE 11.1 was installed on an Amilo laptop manufactured by Fujistu. The ndiswrapper does not work with 11.1 but works fine with 11.0. The ndis drivers won't compile from source. There are errors from a C function call. Does anyone have a solution to this? Hi, I see this happening quiet often in my log file and I assume it's one of the drivers which is not playing nicely. Of course I will probably just hear as a reply that my lernel is tained (doh! I know) and not supported in this case... but maybe, really only maybe, somebody has seen similiar things on non-tainted kernels? If not I'll try to get this thing in my log file without the nvidia blob (I remember having seen it also without.. but I won't put my hands on fire for this). I know this has been discussed before, but at that time, I didn't notice the bug. On this laptop, 11.1RC won't syn. with a NTP server and keep the correct time. Has this been fixed yet? [opensuse-factory] Accessing the package Management Failed (after unsuccessful terminate of y2base)

Some description: go to yast software management, choose "installation summary" filter, and check "not install" checkbox. this will result in hangup of y2base for few minutes - list of packages is too long. I close window and kwin offers me to terminate process y2base, because it is unresponsive. After that i try to access yast SW management again, and got "Accessing the package Management Failed", it is still locked by prevoius y2base process, which was not terminated. Thereby 2 questions: 1) Locking y2base process: can it be prevented? i mean can be given possibility to interrupt such long indexing process harmlessly? 2) What part in my case is responsible for correct terminating of unresponsive process? kwin? And why process was not terminated correctly? Recently joined the list and read this thread in the archive, sorry I can't mend the threading. Comments on fsck(8) times on boot : The fsck time increase greatly with the size of the filesystem, especially once the data structures no longer fit into RAM, but end up using swap. A kernel modification to break a filesystem into chunks, for faster independant verification within the partition, was under development but I'm not sure if it made mainline use yet. By using a multiple file systems (and having generous RAM), I've not had issues with very slow fsck boot times, on my installations, but have seen the problem on servers installed by others. You could use init.d script, to mount certain large data file systems on boot (use noauto in fstab(5)), and also unmount with periodic fscks on shutdown to avoid long boot times. Windows systems suffer the same problem, only they tend not to have any integrity checks made without user intervention, and the first sign of trouble is boot failures or data corruption. For laptops, defining an adequate swap space and using the hibernate and resume features, makes more sense. Windows does have an advantage here, in that sleep, hibernate & resume are maturer, and have to be tested by Manufacturer pre-sale before a model is launched. Even though I'm not aware of any single case when reiserfs didn't work for booting, our goal was to define scenarios which we believe that will keep working in the future. I still remember that when reiserfs was introduced, the only way to use it for booting was to disable sharing of a sector by tails of multiple files (notail option). " Some comments on the reasons for recommended practice, on /boot partions, remembering those times to. SuSE introduced this fast jornalled filesystem into 2.2 (either a late 6.X release of 7.0); and reiserfs was the only journalled filesystem to make into the mainline 2.4.0 kernel (somewhat controversially at last minute, but thanks Linus!). GRUB got introduced a bit later, I think in SuSE-8.X. reiserfs and the VM, were far more stable under SuSE, than other popular distro's, because some patches weren't included in mainline, with RedHat's kernel team for instance committed to subsystems developed and maintained by their inhouse teams. ext2 was recommended for /boot because it lacked a journal file. /boot as a seperate partition was made small, perhaps only 32-64MiB, so a journal taking 1/3-1/2 space was rather wasteful. A small seperate /boot was fast to fsck(8) and load, and avoided any BIOS issues with cylinders falling above 1024. BIOSes were very, very flakey and generally only tested with DOS/WIN9X. reiserfs being fairly new, wasn't recognised by some common rescue disks. "notails" to avoid files packed into blocks, was due to LILO working with LBA blocks, not the filesystem. reiserfs disk layout and code, was not nearly so stable. Future updates might occur and break GRUB, until it's code was updated. GRUB did understand the filesystems, but some like (ext2) were better tested than others. It is perfectly possible to mount /boot ro, or have it as noauto during normal use, to avoid fscks and accidents like deleting (overwriting) the running kernel. Unfortunately the kernel update mechanism, did not fail gracefully if /boot unmounted, and bug reports seemed to be ignored. Hello everyone, Feedback regarding openSUSE 11.1 RC 1: I would like to be able to right click on a tar.gz/tar.bz2/zip/etc file and unzip wherever it is located. I could do that on previous openSUSE releases. Today I have upgraded my openSUSE 11.1 RC 1 system to the latest kernel update and my default grub entry was changed to floppy. This shouldn't have happened. The KDE updater applet is unable to install updates. It always exits with "An error occurred." I have to use YaST or zypper to keep my system up- to-date. Speaking of YaST, if you launch YaST and switch to repositories, it takes a while to load the list of repositories, which btw, not all of them are shown since this movable separator is way too high. Hi, You may wonder why you haven't heared from me - but I'm stil alive. The status of 11.1 is pretty short: it's cursed. The GM was supposed to be done on thursday last week, but late on tuesday we found that the rpm headers in the 11.1 project were all wrong and so we rebuilt all packages, which took till friday due the build service playing hard to get. Then I released a GMC and we fixed 5 urgent problems to have a GM on monday - so I thought. Casual J. noticed in #457095 that the download DVD miss the "check installation medium" boot entry - which was really important to get back, so tuesday. This morning I noticed that the images for the installation contain files they really should not contain and so we had redo the DVDs one more time. But we decided to ship the retail DVD even with this bug to the fab. And this afternoon we noticed that a non-standard 11.0 update (well, one that is standard 11.0 + acroread installed) on x86_64 will leave the system unusable. This bug (bnc#457564 if you like reading horror storries) made us redo 110(!) packages + resend the DVDs to the fab. So we're here still without GM - but fortunately still 9 days to go for public download. [opensuse-factory] lost all "System" programs in gnome menu

After some zypper and a bad reboot, I lost all the programs from the "start" menu on the right in the "system" category including the logout and others. Any way to restore them easily? [opensuse-factory] all manpages broken?

Hi, is it again just me or all manpages missing dashes? I looked at "man setfacl" which was missing the dashes in front of all options. Now I looked at "man bash" and "man ls" and they are all missing the "-" in front of all options. anybody else seeing this? [opensuse-factory] HDTV - Mode Not Supported

Hello everyone, I have a fresh installation of 11.1 RC1 64-bit. The installation goes great, as does the loading screen after installation. Once it gets to the desktop, however, my display (Samsung 40" 1080p HDTV) goes blank and displays "mode not supported". I tried installing the ATI drivers (8.11) but this made no difference. Currently I'm using a little Samsung 15" LCD until the HDTV gets working. A note of interest however, the 15" LCD does not display the correct resolution either, it defaults to 800x600 (native is 1024x768). Any changes I make to the display (via 'Configure Desktop') are not saved. Just tried to install Opensuse 11.1RC1 on my laptop it keeps barfing when trying to use images to install if i disable images it installs fine the complaints i get are about LZM errors and unable to delete file **** Apart from that it seems ok so far apart from that darn KDE4 stuff Pete . -- SuSE Linux 10.3-Alpha3.
