Hello all, <http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version> says in part 'If you choose this installation type, you download a small boot medium to start the installation from and the YaST installer does the rest for you' I have tried this method and cannot get beyond the error message 'Could not find the SUSE Linux Installation Source' Can someone tell me the name of these repositories. [opensuse-factory] My 10.2 A4 report

I have had problems with konsole on 10.2 Alphas. The problem was, that when LC_ALL was set to fi_FI@euro, konsole crashed after some output (with LC_ALL set to C crashes happened, but not often). With Alpha 4, the problems seem to vanish. I had the USB mouse problem on installation also. Unlike someone claimed, it was impossible to install with mere keyboard (or it might be, that since the installation program found out that I have mouse, keyboard installation did not work). I used PS/2 mouse, and changed to USB on installed system. Hi, a very simple question about zypp multiarch handling. How does zypp deal with the following situations: 1) A package is available in the base installation source for both x86_64 and i586, and in the update repo there is just an i586 package. The x86_64 package is currently installed and the i586 package in the update repo has a higher version number. Does it "upgrade" (wrt. the version) resp. "downgrade" (wrt. the architecture)? Or will it keep the installed package? 2) Quite the same as 1), but during a system upgrade: Any differences in this respect between a system upgrade and an online update? [opensuse-factory] SIGTERM in ip-down

I just spent on hour trying to find out why /etc/ppp/ip-down.local is never called: something is sending a SIGTERM to /etc/ppp/ip-down before ip-down can check for the existance if ip-down.local. Sometime while SuSEfirewall2 is being restarted (is this a security problem?) or immediately after. Why does this happen? It's not much good if ip-up/down get killed halfway. ip-down does: case "$BASENAME" in ip-down) restore_nameservers isdn_restartinterface start_firewall echo NEVER REACHED if test -x /etc/ppp/ip-down.local ; then SUSE 10.1 still. Awful, awful, awful is the only way I can describe the behavior of the new menus. I never liked real sliding doors, and I don't like these either. Is there some config setting somewhere that will bring back the many years old tree/branch behavior? If so, where? I looked in the menus for Kcontrol/Personal Settings/Control Center for at least 3 minutes before giving up and going to Konsole to type in kcontrol. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. [opensuse-factory] Discussion about starting BETA process earlier - by end of sep 2006

Hi all ! I would like to ask to start the BETA process of openSUSE 10.2 earlier. Alpha4 now is stable enough to be almost BETA - a few fixes here and there and we are BETA-ready. I think it is not-needed to waste another month of time to get to Alpha5 and then BETA1. I suggest, that, because we have almost-stable distro now, start the BETA process by end of this month (Sep, 2006), instead of end of next month, and make feature freeze earlier. So our BETA process will last 1 month longer, and in the end deadline (Dec,2006) we (Novell+Community) will be able to deliver a better and more stable OS for day-to-day use. I want openSUSE 10.2 to be better tested than previous OSes: SUSE Linux 10.0 and 10.1. Hi, what is the minimal amount of RAM required to do a installation? Both graphical and text mode? We are working on a pattern for a minimal installation for 10.2, which would make it interesting again for small/old machines with very limited RAM. Perhaps one could strip down the text mode installer somehow to run on machines with little RAM. What do you think? BTW, there is something like that on the wishlist already. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 When I updated from 9.3 to 10.1 using the iso image, I lost some packages that were not included in the dvd, but were available from the ftp tree. Some of them are easy enough to reinstall later, some, like hylafax, means that the admin (me) needs to go through the configuration process again, loosing some of the advantages of an update compared with a fresh install. This does not happen with the paid box. Thus my sugerence. Would it be possible to have a secondary installation source during an update? Ie, install everything from the primary source (the dvd), and try to get the rest from the ftp. There are some midground alternatives. For examle, the list of what could be installed from the secondary source could already be in the dvd. The update of the missing packages that need downloading could be postponed till the system is up and running, by generating a list. Whatever. Another alternative would be a straight forward method to produce our own iso dvd with our list of packages included, or perhaps easier, adding a second CD/DVD as add-on source, this CD being created by the user from a list of needed packages not in the main dvd. I agree. As far as I understand you, the release date should remain the same, just the time for real BUG fixing should be bigger. Only the feature freeze will be earlier. What influences will this have on the planned updates of packets? I mean - Kernel 2.6.18 (is in RC at the moment) - FireFox 2 - k3b 1.0 - Gnome 2.16 (ok, that one is released. I don't see a problem) Will they still be integrated if released upstream AFTER the feature freeze (which in fact would be WRONG). For the kernel this might be ok, as 2.6.18 can be considered as a bugfix of 2.6.18-RC5, but for other things? For k3b for example: I had some mail contact with the author regarding cdrecod / cdrkit. Most probable he will start to support both of them of course slightly shifting a schedule due to the new upcoming license issues. But otherwise, I think everybody agrees that we better spend time on bug fixing with what we have now instead of adding fancy features until the last moment and not having time to test it completely. [opensuse-factory] GDK applications are crashing on Itanium (IA-64)

Hi, When clicking on Control center or Preferred applications from the GNOME desktop, I get nothing. Starting control-center and application-browser from a shell displays the following message on the console: Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_get_name: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed aborting... Is there anybody out there experiencing the same issue? FYI, the X mode isn't started at boot time although I'm in runlevel 5. I must manually enter /opt/gnome/sbin/gdm as root to start up GDM. Perhaps is there an initialization problem with the display preventing GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display) to succeed? All this with up-to-date openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 4: - gnome-main-menu-0.6.2-4 - control-center2-2.15.92-4 - gdk-pixbuf-0.22.0-95 If a bug report report will be appreciated, against which component should I report this problem? [opensuse-factory] gnome-screensaver doesn't recognize password!

Hi, With today's updates, I cannot wake up my GNOME session once the screensaver has been started: the connexion dialog box tells me that my password is incorrect. And I'm sure it's absolutely correct since I log in my GNOME session with the exact same password (obviously).This is with gnome-screensaver-2.15.7-3 on an Itanium workstation (IA-64 architecture). I hadn't this problem with previous gnome-screensaver release (don't remember the version though). Is there anybody out there experiencing the same issue? Cheers, Emeric

Hi, I've downloaded and burnt the X86 boot disk for internet install (openSUSE10.2 Alpha 4). The disk verified ok but the boot process hasn't recognised the install media. I've used a re-writable CD does that matter? Noticed that ftp.gwdg.de allready has the openSUSE-10.2-Alpha4 directory open and populated. The openSUSE-10.2-Alpha3_Alpha4-x86_64-CD5.delta.iso has only 8.4 MB, which seemed too small for me. So I downloaded it and checked the md5sum 01237374b19454cfb7f1051229584346 is right according MD5SUMS. But applying the delta to my openSUSE-10.2-Alpha3-x86_64-CD5.iso (MD5SUM f0cd3467a6b1afebdd0c66112a7b2ff2 ) fails with : [...] FreeNX.noarch: verbatim copy free-ttf-fonts.noarch (bzip): applying delta gtkdoc.noarch (bzip): applying delta gtksourceview-sharp2.noarch (bzip): applying delta ikvm.noarch (bzip): applying delta indata read 334 bytes failed So it seems to me, that the upstream of ftp.gwdg.de provides a broken openSUSE-10.2-Alpha3_Alpha4-x86_64-CD5.delta.iso. List, I would say quiet good news for our openSUSE 10.2: Gnome 2.16 isofficially released and came out of the beta. When reading the change log, there is a lot of 3D stuff (like wobbling windows, exploding windows) mentioned. After reading all this, there remains the question about the usage of XGL and AIGLX... is there any sense to keep this projects up? - What exactly brings XGL as advantage over the new features of Gnome 2.16 by itself (except the cube for the desktops)? - Will the 3D features of metacity be activated in the openSUSE distribution (as they have to be activated on compile time?) I would like to test this version on my laptop. Straight ftp works but is rather slow at the moment. This is a Dell GX150 with 512M RAM and onboard i815 video. I just tried 3 times to install factory from FTP, and each time I get the subject message and dumped into text install. Now there is no simple way to help new Linux user with installation or configuration problem if I have to see the logs. First I have to explain to user: - how to open console or switch to terminal session, - how to switch to root, - where to find logs, - what to type to get there, - what to type to copy logs in reply message If I want to see only few lines from the log: - how to use "vi" (that is the reason why the vi is not good as only option for basic installed system), - how to find and transfer to mail client information that I want to see. Than after all I can see the log or excerpt from it. Above is the reason that I advertise Midnight Commander. http://en.opensuse.org/Midnight_Commander It is lesser to learn for file browsing, viewing and editing using mc than command line, and it fulfills most of demands for a simple troubleshooting system. The problem is that any of "first aid in case of trouble" articles are written by Linux experts. While they are competent in troubleshooting, they can't go in details needed for novice (see above). Expert answers must be translated to the common language, expanded with common Linux knowledge, by some intermediate person that is able to understand both sides. hi, all. I've been testing the 4th Sep packages and some old issues are still bothering me. I don't know if these are x64_64 SUSE 10.1 specific or not: 1. When it comes to identify a source format, Yast prefers YUM to YAST. So almost all the inst sources in my list are in YUM format. Would a feature that gives people a chance to choose be better? Or it was designed to act in this way? 2. Guru source cannot be refreshed. It automatically turns off the refresh option in Yast. With manually refresh it reports a warning saying "does not contain desired media." 3. Cannot add source Gnome supplementary on ftp.suse.com. I can guarantee the accuracy of the adrress. The erorr says something like "Not a valid source" 4. Speed... Guess I can live with that in 10.1 So........Which of these should I file as bugs? Here're my minutes from the last meeting. PolicyKit / ResMgr ================== PolicyKit is a control instance that can be asked before performing an action and therefore can restrict what a user can do on a desktop. It's a system wide daemon, currently running as root. Problems: * Another daemon * possible code quality * overlaps in parts with resmgr Resmgr grants access via ACL to logged in users which is something that PolicyKit does not handle. The consensus was that the features of PolicyKit are liked. We would like to implement the features of resmgr in PolicyKit and drop resmgr so that we have only one daemon running. This needs further evaluation. In 10.2 only hal mounter will use PolicyKit. We plan to have the integration with resmgr done for 10.3. Cryptofs ======== We currently use crypto-loop to setup crypt-partitions. It has been proposed to use the new dm-cryptoloop with LUKS extensions. Since this needs changes in YaST and the boot scripts, it might not be doable for 10.2. We'll investigate this now. Removing Build Dependencies =========================== The minimal set of packages to bootstrap the by default added packages (those that will be added if BuildRequires is empty) consists of 209 packages. The added packages contain some convenience packages like vim and strace for debugging. We discussed the goal to identify a small set of core packages for bootstrapping or for a core distribution. The discussion will continue on mailing lists, the people at the meeting did not see that any directly needed action. GNOME 2.16 and /usr =================== Currently factory has three bugs, the major one is a broken metacity which has just been fixed. The goal is to get everything this until 2006-09-01 into the distribution so that we can do basic tests and then have Alpha4 with GNOME 2.15.92. Once GNOME 2.16 is working properly, the team plans to move from /opt/gnome to /use. This is done in separate steps to make debugging easier. This move has to be done by the end of september - in time for Alpha5. If not, it will be done for 10.3. GNOME will use the %configure and %install rpm macros. No objections from anybody. Hi there, let's get back to the SuSEconfig clearance initiative :) Instead of looking at a special script this time, this is a list of scripts that fall into the same category. They take data from /etc/sysconfig and (re)write it to /etc/* or /var/* (or somewhere else).
