[opensuse-factory] GNOME 2.16
List, I would say quiet good news for our openSUSE 10.2: Gnome 2.16 isofficially released and came out of the beta. When reading the change log, there is a lot of 3D stuff (like wobbling windows, exploding windows) mentioned. After reading all this, there remains the question about the usage of XGL and AIGLX... is there any sense to keep this projects up? - What exactly brings XGL as advantage over the new features of Gnome 2.16 by itself (except the cube for the desktops)? - Will the 3D features of metacity be activated in the openSUSE distribution (as they have to be activated on compile time?) Regards, Dominique

Well, AFAIK this 3D stuff needs something on which it can run. Currently this is either - Xgl (includes Composite extension) - AIGLX + Composite extension NVIDIA plans to add the required GL extensions, which are required for a future driver release, so you won't need Xgl any longer, when you want to use this driver. But you still need to enable the Composite extension! Honestly AFIAK none of our Novell engineers ever managed to get AIGLX working. Even for current X.Org git sources you need additional patches by RH and for compiz as well. :-( And since the Composite extension doesn't work together with the fglrx driver, you need to use Xgl for this driver anyway.

Looks like you mixup XGL with compiz. See my comment above.

I don't know. Someone of the Gnome maintainers would need to comment on this one. At the moment they're disabled explicitly - I suspect they cause significant problems if the COMPOSITE extension is not enabled. You're perfectly welcome to grab the .src.rpm, remove --disable-compositor and rebuild though. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org http://usr-local-bin.org Packages for SUSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms Help end poverty: http://oxfam.org.uk/imin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
