RS/6000 43p 140 does not boot (SuSE 7.1)

Hello everybody. Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ? I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html (ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd). At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed boot floppy:,\zImage In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical: The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so). The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that. The system freezes (or reboots after a long time). (None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.) So obviously, none of these approaches works for me. What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied as files on an MS-DOS disk? Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p. BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251. Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions. Hello, Sorry a little off-topic. I have to install MacOSX on all stations where I work. The standard installation is easy and you can have all the MS softs without problem (beuargh!) and somme packages like Apache are easy to install if you have the installation package (.pkg or something like that) Problem: I did not succeeded till now to install a soft from the source code (tarball, etc ...). I tried Fink and finally it seems to work. Do you know a good mailing-list where I can find somme useful help for MacOSX or a good doculmentation? -- Alain Barthélemy

gconf and gnomemeeting

Hi, I'm trying to make the last version of gnomemeeting working and, after successful compilation of all packages (pwlib, openh323 and gnomemeeting 0.85, which I can make the rpms available to anybody), when I try to launch it, I get an error saying that gconf is not correctly configured on my system. What should I do ? I had to install a few gnome components from the Suse7.3 PPC cds and I probably miss something. GConf seems to be a "transparent" configuration system... Anybody has ideas ? Is it a known problem ? I searched a few mailing lists but nothing interesting appeared. GCC 3.x problems on 7.3 (my littleFoot project)

Hello All, Some history. I have installed 7.3 successfully on a mac 8500+G3 powerlogix upgrade card using an Adaptec 2930 and voodoo 5500 card that I removed from my G4. X11 4.2 is using fbdev driver before anyone asks :) I recently built the 2.4.18+patch kernel (patch details where on http://www.penguinppc.org/) using "gcc version 2.95.3 20010319 (2.95.4 CVS + prerelease/franzo/20010912)". I even configured the kernel just my hardware. Not a hitch. The box is called "littleFoot". Aims. At work I use GCC 3.x or rather g++ on both Sun Solaris 6 and Red Hat Linux. Both I built from scratch with out a hitch. So, for maximum flexibility I wanted to do the same at home. Problem. My work development cycle requires stdlibc++-v3 because of the advanced template and stream algorithms we are writing. I also use a lot of shared library functionality. However, GCC 3.x behaves very oddly on my system. I tried to "make bootstrap" the compiler under Suse PPC 7.3 as I did at work it fails similarly to the problem I describe below. I even installed Andreas Jaeger prebuilt versions (http://www.suse.com/~aj/gcc30.html) The problem I get is an intermittent crash of the compiler. See below. I tried various combinations of make -j 2, make and doing g++ directely. If I do a make clean and then a make -j to build 8 or so files it will fail say on the 7th file. If I try make again it will work. The error message always seems to mention locale_facets.tcc. I am beginning to wonder if I am the only one using g++ 3.x on a macintosh under linux! And am I the only one building a powerpc gcc 3.x on a powerpc gcc 3.x on a macintosh? I recently started to look at http://www.codesourcery.com/gcc_binary_snapshots to see if I can use their prebuilt binaries. They have not packaged this build up as immediately installable but rather captured the bootstrap built and not the make install bit. I have yet to figure out how to piece it all together with the c++ header files. How does Andreas Jeager built gcc 3.x - Does he cross compile it from another host ? Whats the best way forward ? I have a separate email concerning gcc 3.0.4 an its problem. So, Can anyone help ? Where does "franzo" live on the internet ? Is he the PPC compiler expert ? Hello, Bonjour, I finally managed to use PowerBookG3 with a projector (to use with simpress). Originally the projected image was yellow. Here follows original /etc/X11/XF86Config (yellow image thus): I make transformations like indicated with arrows below. ==> i have no more yellow screen with KDE but can't have more than 800x600 resolution (which does not disturb me) and with 1024x768 ==> yellow screen) But the image is blurred/fuzzy or more precisely split into two image. It is thus difficult to see the details. Does anybody have a way to set the problem. Do I have tp play with HorizSync (now 31-65) or VertRefresh (now 58-78). Bootstrap building GCC 3.0.4 (littleFoot Project)

HI, When bootstrap building GCC 3.0.4. I get the following error message. I spotted a similar one in the GCC BUG LIST but the reply was that this is a known red hat issue look there ? Install on Powerbook G3 Kanga?

Hello, I am wondering if it is possible to install SuSE Linux 7.3 on an original PowerBook G3. It is the one that has the same form factor as the PB 3400 but has a G3 instead and went by the code-name of "kanga" when it was released. I am following the "Old World" instructions from the manual and am first booting into MacOS (8.6) and then running BootX from the suseboot folder on the CD to start the installation. In BootX I am choosing the "install-oldworld" kernel. The ramdisk size parameter is defaulting to 8192. I've been checking the 'No Video Driver" box and have been setting the "more kernel arguments" field to "root=/dev/fd0". When I click the SuSE Linux button in BootX the machine reboots and the kernel appears to be starting. I get Tux in the upper left corner and a lot of the usual sort of messages that show up early in the Linux boot process. (I can type them in if anyone would find them beneficial.) The last line displayed is "ide: Assuming 33 MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx". At this point the machine just hangs and the only thing to do is a CTRL, Apple, Power to reboot. I've tried a number of different settings in BootX. It seems to me as though it is not finding any sort of root filesystem to continue with the boot process. As such I've tried setting the additional kernal parameter to root=/dev/hda, hdb, hdc, and so on but always with the same results. Any help would be appreciated as I'd really like to get some use out of this laptop since it isn't supported by MacOS X. Thank you in advance, Terry Longrie

problems with netatalk

I seem to be having a problem configuring netatalk... I can mount the User directories with read and write privledges. but When I try to share out other dircetories I only get read privledges. Below is my entries in thew AppleVolumes.default file: ~ mswindows,codepage:maccode.iso8859-1 /documents "documents" rwlist:@100 /serverhd "serverhd" rwlist:@0 The other problem I have is that Mac Applications that reside on the Linux box default to plain text files and are unusable as applications. After having played around with its configuration without any success, I decided to run wvdial from within the lxdialog menu since I had nothing else to do - and it worked. Even with my very first wvdial.config file! Thus, it seems that there is a problem with kinternet. With 'locate kinternet' I couldn't find any configuration file for it. Either my settings are screwy or the program doesn't like my environment. If you know of some way how to tweak kinternet please let me know, otherwise I will forward a bug message to the kinternet guys. Best wishes from a happily connected Jutta

iee1394 / firewire and SuSE 7.3 sucess (kind of)

Hi, I couldn't get the ieee1394 to work with my blue and white G3. It uses the pcilynx driver, but the driver doesn't seem to work with the sbp2 module (which treats the drive as a scsi device. However, I bought a cheap pci firewire card (about $20 on e-bay), and used the ohci1394 module instead of the pcilynx module. It worked like a charm. I'll keep the pci card in my computer until the pcilynx module works correctly, then I'll put the pci card in my old pentium box and use the on-board G3 hardware. alsa drivers ?

Hi, I recently upgraded my kernel to 2.4.18 from BenH (by the way, merci Ben !). But for various reasons, I had to go from scratch and rebuild it, which went well so far. The problem is that I have no more sound, using the Alsa architecture. Is it enough to take the /lib/modules/2.4.12/misc directory and copy it into /lib/modules/2.4.18-ben0 ? Is there a way to tell the kernel to include alsa drivers and rebuild them ? I have no clue here, since i'm really not a specialist. Any help is welcome. does yast2 update packages like php w/online updates?

When I run yast2, it will automatically install security updates if I wish. That's great. I've noticed that the version of php installed on my SuSE PPC 7.3 is 4.0.6, and that there's a security problem in 4.0.6 that could be fixed by upgrading to PHP 4.1.2 I ran yast2 and didn't see anything about PHP 4.1.2. I don't know if this is something that will eventually be put in the update list so I can get it via yast2, or is it not the sort of thing that ever shows up? In other words, am I on my own to update PHP? I really like the automatic update functionality, and I don't want to "break" it by going in and changing configuration or installation stuff on my own. I'm pretty new to SuSE and I've found that suseconfig keeps a checksum so I have to be careful about what config files I touch. Realtek 8139 Driver... bug? feature?

Hi all - especially Olaf Hering, I've been playing around with SusePPC for quite a time now... I started on PPC with Suse 7.0, got a 7.1 and bought the 7.3 packet few days ago. I'm running SusePPC on my Umax Pulsar 604e@200 MHz including a NIC with Realtek chipset 8139. SusePPC 7.0 couldn't get this nic running, with 7.1PPC I could get a conection after renaming the module, and with PPC 7.3 it's still the same. IIRC this problem with a bad-named module was discussed on the German suse-linux mailing list few time after 7.0 for Intel had been released. Timetable for SuSE 8?

Hello, I'm thinking of getting SuSE Linux to run on my iBook2 since it seems to be better-maintained than the rest (would have gotten it last month but SuSE people provided an x86-only link to their XFree 4.2 update, leading me to believe there's no PPC version available, incorrectly at that). The problem is, with SuSE 8 for x86 out by mid-April, I don't really want to end up with 8 obsolete CDs... so anyone has any knowledge of when SuSE 8/PPC will be out? Hello, I would like to upgrade OpenOffice on my G3 Do I just have to delete the directory /OpenOffice.org638 were all the files are installed (but the /user directory too!!!) and then reinstall/recompile oo641b_installer.tar.gz? Trying with the original 2.4.12 or 2.4.16 kernels did not work at all, the kernel didnot recognise the flat panel properly (i was getting something on the screen, but the synchronisation parameters were obviously wrong, as all the boot information was squeezed in the upper part of the screen and spread out throughout its full width). I could not test the nv driver though beacuse it requires xf86 4.2 to work and it looks as if the xf86 4.2 rpms that i downloaded from suse web site cannot be installed properly (missing a few libraries, libXtrap.so.6, libXrandr.so.1, libXv.so.1 in particular). However, the colors are fine, and the whole desktop environment is much nicer than it was. Still i have a number of problems. The kernel that AniJoshi provided is 2.4.18-rc2, and i don't have the modules for it. It means that a number of things don't work, among which the cdrom (hdc: no driver present), the modem (cannot find the modem port), and probably many other features. it also tells that hfs is not supported under this kernel.
