PPP and SusePPC 7.1

Hi all, I'm trying to access the Internet using an old PowerMac, a Hagenuk ISDN Terminal Adapter ("Speed Dragon") and SusePPC 7.1 with the Standard Kernel (2.4.2 AFAIR). Everytime I try dialling in, pppd dies with exit status 1, and the following message appears in /var/log/messages: > Couldn't set tty to PPP discipline. It doesn't matter if I use wvdial or a "pppd call <provider>" command. Neither in man pppd nor in the pppd FAQ I found something concerning this subject... Any help would be appreciated! NEWBIE Q: How to upgrade my kernel ..

I would like to upgrade to the latest kernel and would appreciate any advice .. Also, is there a HOWTO or other instruction page I can look at before proceeding .. I've built the kernel before, but it was a very long time ago and I basically followed some instructions I found so I don't recall enough to build it on my own without guidance .. I'm currently using SUSE 7.0, kernel 2.2.16 (I believe) with X 4.0 on an iMac DV 400 .. I would like to be able to access my FW harddrive, but I'm not to hopeful .. Also, are there drivers to use a Logitech QuickCam on Linux? .. Finally, can anyone give me advice on getting my Epson Stylus Photo 750 working under linux .. TIA -joe

Thanks for the info. For pmud, i've installed the latest pmud available on the suse ftp servers, so it should have removed apm. There is still a lot of apm stuff on the disc though, even in the /proc directory, which may indicate that apm is still there... If you find out what exactly you removed, and how you did remove it, please tell me. This sleep thing is really driving me nuts!! For xmms, i indeed tried what you suggest, but with both /dev/cdrom and /dev/hde, but none worked. I'll try /dev/sr0 tonight (no audio cd available at work...). pmud and Audio CDs

Hi list, I have a pismo with suse linux ppc (7.0) installed, upgraded to kernel 2.4.9-benh0-benh (along with modutils-2.4.1-0.ppc.rpm, ppp-2.4.0-3.ppc.rpm, pmud-0.7.2-1.ppc.rpm and modules-alsa.conf loaded in /etc/modules.conf). Everything works fine (network, sound, ppp) except 2 features. although the latest pmud was installed and seems to be apparently well recognised at boot, the automatic sleep is still behaving strangely. The machine goes to sleep (with the green led blinking) at very strange moments, even when I'm busy typing on the keyboard. If I'm only typing a text on the local directory, it's only a small problem. But if i'm typing a message on a remote host (through the modem connection), it shuts down the modem connection when going to sleep, and i have to start again my message from the beginning, which is really a pain. Another example of this strange behaviour is when the machine goes to sleep when the cpu is busy computing (code running for a long time), in which case it sometimes even doesn't wake up properly (screen totally black, forcing a hard reboot). This happens both when the AC adaptater is plugged in or not. looking at the man pages, i tried to install in /etc/power a pwrctl-local file (enabled for execution with chmod +x) with the following 2 lines as the only content: #!/bin/bash echo 1 in order to return 1 all the time and totally disable the sleep function (as indicated in the man pages). It apparently does not work, although executing the file myself by typing ./pwrctl-local indeed returns 1. I also added a file called `level' with only `3 3' in it, meaning maximum performance for both battery and AC modes (according to the man pages), assuming that it meant no (or at least very rare) sleep. I can see no difference in the behaviour, ie the same problems are observed. Would any one managed to solve this problem. Having the sleep function operational is great, but when it operates completely randomly, it's worse than not having it at all. Another problem concerns the reading of audio CDs. the sound is working fine (thanks to the alsa modules downloaded from olaf's page). I tried different things. cdparanoia (in su mode) reads audio cd nicely, and change them to, eg, a .cdda file, but apparently cannot redirect the output to the internal speakers. xmms tells that there is nothing in the cdrom drive (while there is obviously something), but can read well the .cdda file produced with cdparanoia (demonstrating at the same time that the internal speakers work ok). I also tried kscd (the kde audio cd player); while it recognises the cd and all the tracks on it, playing the cd produces no sound at all, although the speaker level is unmuted (set to max, with either kmix or alsamixer). I noticed that the cdrom level is set to 0 in both kmix and alsamixer (and CANNOT be unmuted apparently). It looks as if everything works (the cd is accessed by cdparanoia and kscd, the speakers work when reading .cdda files with xmms), but there is no single tool that can make them work together. Does anyone have a trick or a fix to make all this work properly?? I know about the nvidia ppc driver being missing. However, I understood that there were 2 separate problems. One concerned the mixed up X11 color table, which was a kernel issue (according to Olaf Herring). The other one is the acceleration, which obviously requires a proper driver. If problem 1 could be fixed, life would be already much easier on the new G4s. And my question was whether the recently acclaimed official Mandrake PPC distribution did provide some progress on this topic. I was a bit reluctant to reinstall linux completely (thereby ruining completely the suse implementation for which i invested quite some time already), just to check this particular point, given the fact that it will very likely bring nothing new... jean-francois Donati

Using NCPFS

Hi, Has anyone else experienced problems using NCPFS on Suse PPC? I'm using kernel 2.4.9-benh0-benh and I did upgrade to ncpfs-2.2.0.18-48. I can now do an 'slist' thanks do the ncpfs upgrade, but when I do an ncpmount, I only get the first level of directories. So if I ncpmount -S MYSERV -U gconaty /mnt/netware cd /mnt/netware ls I get the directories DATA1, DATA2, and SYS fine. But if I change into those directories, there's nothing in them! I did the same exact steps on a rhat 7.1 x86 box and it works fine (I can navigate down the directory hierarchy). Any clues? Thanks, Garrett Conaty

Broken PPC SSL RPM and other things

Hi, 1) Open SSL PPC RPM (0.9.6-14) in update dir is odd, it breaks MOD_PHP4, please remove it either replace with valid one. 2) KDE 2.2 Control Center -> System Profiler does not work - it complains about undefined function (I have all base 2.2 packages installed). 3) Anyone can suggest me where I can doanload or rsync benh 2.4.6 tree? sleep, lombard, kernel 2.4.7

Hello, I'm using SuSE 7.1 with the 2.4.7 kernel on a Lombard (Powerbook G3/400), updated via the beta directory on the ftp server, using the deflt rpm. It works rather well for me, except for one thing: sleep support. After I installed the pmud.rpm package on the FTP site in the beta dir, the computer sleeps just fine, but on waking, the screen is scrambled, like it is stuck between video modes. At this point, I can't even force the machine to the console. Anyone have any tips on how to get sleep working correctly? Do I need a newer kernel? Another question, maybe a dumb one, but one I can't figure out in any case: if I do want to update the kernel to one of the newer benh kernels in the BETA dir, where do I get the system.map for it? Alternately, how do I update the kernel to a different package than the ones that are included in the deflt rpm? I know about changing lilo.conf, etc. but do I just stick the vmlinux* in /boot and go from there? Thanks to Joss for the tip on accessing my CD using ide-scsi rather than the cdrom driver. This does work as a workaround. I only get a hang if I try to mount a DVD using 'mount -t udf /dev/sr0 /dvd' for some reason. In looking through the patches for the kernel I found one called "70__2.4.7-pre6_safe_ide_audiocd.diff". Could there actually be an error in this patch? I noticed that it sets some variable check_media_type to 1, and wondered if that is the key why the cdrom driver isn't working for me. Once I figure out how to get a patched kernel so that I can build, I'll try to back out that patch and see if it works. Speaking of patching the kernel, is there 1) src RPMS for the BETA kernels? 2) some howto? The README says to patch a vanilla 2.4.6 tree with all the patches there, but I wonder which are actually applicable to the 2.4.6 tree as I see some that are called "*2.4.6-pre3*" and such. 3) A centralized group for doing the PPC kernel? It seems as though each linux distribution has their own patches. I'd be for supporting a centralized group w/ website, etc. Also, in my first message I meant to say "official BETA" rather than "office BETA". Thanks for the tip on StarOffice though. What I really am looking for is something similar to the Mandrake Cooker or RedHat rawhide. Finally, thanks to the SuSE team and others for supporting Linux on the PPC. My Powerbook is much happier with this and MacOnLinux rather than using OSX. The performance is MUCH better also. Keep up the good work! The 'office' quite for PPC Linux is Open Office, the open source version of Star Office. It is an unwieldy beast but has just gone into its first 'milestone' version is should be quite useable. I think it is on the suse ftp site or you can get it from www.penguinppc.org (although their ftp site is down for a while). HELP: CDROM access under kernel 2.4.7 and a few other questions

Hello, I'm in a bit of a catch 22. It seems that out-of-the-box Mac on Linux doesn't work for me on Suse 7.1 for the PPC. I've got a Titanium powerbook. On a fresh install, I get errors with Mac on Linux. The good news is that by upgrading my kernel to the one in the update/BETA section (2.4.7-12 or 2.4.9-benh) on the ftp site, Mac on Linux works great (plus I get better sound, can put the powerbook to sleep, etc.) Unfortunately though, for some reason the CDROM no longer works. When trying to do a mount I get "Wrong Medium Type". And by looking at the kernel messages I get "cdrom: pid 443 must open device O_NONBLOCK!" Any clues what's going on here? I've been using Linux on the X86 for quite some time, but on the PPC it's quite new for me. Does Suse have an office beta program? Where can I get the beta kernel source? The FTP directory only seems to contain compiled kernels. My impressions are that the docs/help for Suse are very good for the normal user, but I can't find too much for the developer. Kernel 2.4 loaded with BootX doesn't recognise internal IDE controller

Hi all, If someone could help me with my problem, I would be greatly appreciative since it is driving me nuts. Please bear with me while I explain the situation... I am running SuSE PPC 7.0 with kernel version 2.2.16 on an old Performa 6400/200 (boot using BootX) and everything has been running smoothly for a year. For a while now, I have been trying on-and-off to update the system to SuSE 7.1, but can't for the following reasons: I can't update via ftp from the original 7.0 disks since my ethernet card doesn't work with the kernel on the cd - it only works with an updated Realtek module loaded into it. I thought (and tried in a half-hearted way) about making a bootable disk with the module loaded, but got totally lost. So I tried using a ramdisk with a vmlinux kernel 2.4 and sure enough I was able to connect to the ftp servers. I got the progress bar saying loading into ramdisk, which filled but never launched yast or anything - just hung. Next, I tried simply to update the kernel to 2.4. After many attempts to build a kernel and install it, I realised that since I was using BootX, I simply had to download the latest vmlinux from the suse ftp sites, and put it in the system folder (I actually used a Linux Kernels folder in the system folder to enable the choice of kernel 2.2 or 2.4). Now when I boot up, the problems start to be revealed - the linux drive cannot be mounted, since it cannot be found. I have two drives - one (/dev/hde) containing macos and the linux root system which is under the control of the original ide controller, and another drive (/dev/hdc) which is controlled by an ATA/66 PCI ide controller. I have to have the macos drive on the original ide controller, since the pci controller cannot be used to boot. Under kernel 2.2, the boot message regarding the internal original ide controller says: PCI_IDE: unknown IDE controller on PCI bus 00 device 68, VID=105a, DID=4d38 but the system can still use the IDE controller, since the drive attached (/dev/hde) can be read: Partition check:\ <4> hdc: hdc1 hdc2 hdc3 hdc4 hdc5 hdc6 hdc7 hdc8 hdc9\ <4> hde: hde1 hde2 hde3 hde4 hde5 hde6 hde7 hde8 hde9 hde10\ (hde8 is the boot partition) However, under kernel 2.4, the boot message says something similar regarding unknown IDE controller, but then says :using 13 (or something like that, but I can't get it down fast enough). Now, the hde drive cannot be read since only /dev/hdc partition table is checked. Of course, since the boot partition is /dev/hde8 I then get an error because the root device can't be mounted. This explains why I can't update the system to SuSE 7.1, since when using a kernel 2.4 vmlinux, /dev/hde cannot be read, and so the system cannot be updated. Under kernel 2.2, I can't get to the internet because the ethernet card is not supported properly and causes the system to hang (unless an updated module is loaded as in the installed kernel). A real catch 22 situation. The only solution I see is to have the system put on the ATA/66 controller, and put a different HD with just macos and bootx with vmlinux 2.4 on the original controller - that way macos can be booted to get to the bootx screen, whereupon /dev/hdd can be specified. This would work, if I had space inside the mac for another internal drive, but I don't. Hmmmf. Any suggestions? Mainly, why is the original ide controller in the 6400/200 performa mac not recognised? Of course, everything is fine in the current configuration, but it means I am stuck on kernel 2.2.16 and SuSE PPC 7.0 Sincerely (frustrated) Andy

Nop, it's a micro-channel ( MCA ) box, not supported by SusePPC. You'll have to find a model Power 850/830, 7248, 140, 150, 170, 260, 270, B50, B80 or F80 these work pretty well. Hi everybody, Did anyone tried the newly released Mandrake 8.0 PPC (I mean the final version, not the beta one) and compared it to Suse 7.0 or 7.1 PPC?? Is is working fine, in particular with the newer macs (G4 @ 733 MHz or more)?? Hallo zusammen, folgendes Problem: Habe Kernel kompiliert (2.4.9). Jetzt soll/muß das Kernelimage (Old World Mac, BootX) nach meinem Linux Boot Ordner (Standard hfs-Format). Also mount -t hfs /dev/hdaX /XY ->geht. Anschließend will/muß ich vmlinux nach /XY kopieren und der Rechner friert ein. Gibt es da eine Lösung? (einfacher als per ftp nach win, reboot nach mac, download per ftp von win nach mac) Gruß Stephan

When I launch BootX from MacOS and then select "SuSE Linux as the OS, my hard drive spins down and the screen goes blank. How do I fix this? Do I need to create an additional partition for another Mac OS? Thanks for the help! Lou

In GTK and QT applications ctrl works fine for hotkeys, but ctrl+click to select multiple elements of a listbox doesn't. Are there different kinds of ctrl keys? (English version at the end of this message) Hallo da draußen, monatelang lief alles fein - und jetzt das: Auf meinem Arbeits-G4 Cube habe ich SuSE 7.1 (neben OS 9.1 und X) installiert. Häufig habe ich MacOS 9.1 unter Mac-on-Linux parallel laufen, wobei es ganz selten mal zum Einfrieren des Bildschirms kam - so z.B. vorhin. Der x-term, von dem aus ich MOL gestartet hatte, meldete einen "buffer overflow" - also habe ich in "top" MOL gekillt. Danach kamen aber andauern KDE-Fehlermeldungen, so dass ich mich zu einem Reboot entschloss - und das war's: Zwar sind in der Boot-Auswahl alle "Volumes" wie bisher zu sehen, Linux bootet aber (im Gegensatz zu den beiden Mac-OS) nicht mehr: "Image not found .... try again. WARNING ! default t_close called! boot: " Was bedeutet das? (Hat das vielleicht etwas mit der Open-Firmware zu tun?) Der Versuch, von der ersten SuSE-CD das installierte System oder das Rescue-System zu booten, schlug auch fehl: die Linux-Root-Partition wurden komplett nicht als bootbar erkannt. Das "Vortasten" mittels der Installations-Routine ergab, dass die Partitionen (/, /home/, swap) zwar noch existieren, aber als File-System wird das Mac-Unix genannt ... Bevor ich jetzt alles neu installiere und mir damit einen Haufen Arbeit mache (vom Verlust der nicht per Backup gesicherten Daten mal ganz zu schweigen) hoffe ich, dass jemand von Euch eine Idee hat, was ich vielleicht tun könnte. Ich arbeite zwar schon länger mit Linux, auch auf Macs, aber doch eher nur an der "Oberfläche" - deshalb bitte ich um Verständnis und lieber etwas ausführlichere Anleitungen :-) Herzlichen Dank schon jetzt von Bernd Ach so: Vielleicht sollte ich die Anfrage auch auf Englisch formulieren ... ? Ich versuch's mal: High everybody, A view months ago I installed SuSE PPC 7.1, MacOS 9.1 and X on a G4-Cube at work, running OX 9.1 sometimes parallel to Linux under "Mac on Linux" (MOL). Today MOL crasht, giving a "buffer overflow" message at the console. Because this happenes a few times before, I was not very much alarmed. And when a few KDE-error messages appeared, I decided to reboot the system: but it didn't boot anymore. Instead of booting and the option "*linux" is shown as always, the boot prompt gives the message "Image not found ... try again. WARNING ! default t_close called" boot: " So, what does this mean? (Maybe something concerning the Open Firmware of Mac?) I tried to boot a installed system or the rescue system from the first SuSE-CD - but it could not found any Linux root partition. During a test-run of the install-routine (which i shut down before anything was changed) all the linux partitions (/, /home, swap) where still shown, but with the Mac-Unix-File System and without any mount points. Before re-installing the whole system (and by that: losing some of the not yet backuped late work) I hope, somebody has any idee about what could be done here. I have been working with Linux (mostly on a x86-Laptop, but also on PPC) for some time, but still more on the "surface" (GUI) - please excuse me, if the failure I made is too stupid and be a little bit more "verbose" in your helping answers. SuSE 7.2/iMac bye-bye I don't exist anymore

Hi, I installed SuSE 7.2 on a iMac dark blue transparent case Normally with SuSE 7.1 on a PC I can let the computer open the whole weekend without problem. Linux is a very stable O.S. On a iMac it is not the case. When I came back at work this morning, impossible to wake up my station: I could push any key on my keyboard, jerk my mouse, even push the reset button on the right side of the iMac box: nothing. The only solution: take off electrical plug. Did somebody on the ppc list have the same problem and know how to ressuscitate an iMac?
