Older iMac and ibook not booting from SuSE LinuxPPC 7.1 CD1

I just recently got my retail copy of SuSE 7.1 for PowerPC. I could not boot my CD1 via open firmware on a rev. B iMac and my iBook 333. Has anyone having these problems, If you do please post what New World PowerMac you have on this thread. Old world Macs are invited to post too. MOL causing kernel panics

Hi, I've just updated to suse 7.1, with the 2.2.18 kernel. I've got an iMac 350 (slot-loading) with 320 MB RAM. Suse is on a 2.5 GB partition, Mac OS 9.1 & 10.0.1 are on a 4 GB hfs+ partition. I've tried running MOL (version 0.9.53 from the Suse 7.1 disks) but it always fails to startup. I usually don't mind hacking around to get to root of the problem, but now I'm finding that MOL is causing kernel panics about half the time I run it, and it's no longer fun. Is this normal? I guess MOL needs low-level system access to work, but if it's going to be crashing my system I may as well just boot into Mac OS 9.1. reformat ext2 to hfs

Hi Is there a quick way to reformat an ext2 partition to hfs to give access to MacOS? To make it more difficult ;-) the partition contains Suse 7 and is located on hda9 (last partition). The MacOS 9.1 startupvolume is on the same disk. I want to get access from MacOS without reformatting the complete hd with "Laufwerke konfigurieren". I already tried with pdisk, but neither MacOS nor Linux seems to be impressed of the canges I made. I deleted hda9, so theoretically, Linux should be gone, but it still starts without problems... thanx in advance Serge

KDE2.2.1 installation problem

Hi. I'm trying to install KDE 2.1.1 from the packages in ftp.suse.com, including the various development RPMs. I do this with rpm from the command line, not giving up on dependencies, because I found out that it's a bad habit to give them up... Anyways, when attempting to install kdebase-devel, it complains that it depends on alsadev. Nice going, but where do I find alsadev? Not on the original CDs, not on the Suse ftp server, not on rpmfind.net. Can anybody point me in the right direction? My SuSE is PPC/7.0. Sound and Boot Priority for 7.1

Hi, I upgraded from 7.0 to 7.1 (kernel 2.4.2 standard) on a Mac G4, 400 MHz. I can no longer get sound to function properly. Using YAST2 I got the Awacs driver to function once; that is, KDE2 would play WAV files, XMMS would work, etc. As soon I rebooted all was lost. The above files will play as static. The best I can get is the DMA sound driver to work which gives the standard system beeps but nothing else. ALSA is installed and I've tweeked the modules.conf file forever without results. Interestingly the exact upgrade on my son's G3 350 MHz B&W works fine; YAST2 configured the sound correctly the first time. Does anyone know about this? Second: with 7.0 I changed the boot priority to MacOS by swapping lines in the os.chooser file so I had to press the space bar to launch Linux. This doesn't seem to function anymore with 7.1. In fact 7.1 seems to ignore the os.chooser file. I'm currently stuck with Linux as the default OS. How do I switch it to default to MacOS? mySQL client

I was wondering if anyone knows a a good GUI client for mySQL? One that could run from my mac running OS 9 would be better still. I'd like to be able to edit my tables with a little more ease that a command line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance Bill

strange kernel messages

Hi, I've mounted a second internal ATA hard drive (IBM DTLA-307030) in my B&W G3. After installing Linux (SuSE 7.0) onto this drive, I always get these strange kernel messages: kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } I've never had these messages with the build in hard drive (IBM DTTA-350640). First I thought I configured the drives wrong. So I tried several configurations: 1 Master: DTTA-350640 blue connector of a 24" UltraATA cable Slave: DTLA-307030 gray connector of a 24" UltraATA cable 2 Master: DTTA-350640 black connector of a 24" UltraATA cable Slave: DTLA-307030 grey connector of a 24" UltraATA cable 3 Master: DTLA-307030 black connector of a 24" UltraATA cable Slave: DTTA-350640 gray connector of a 24" UltraATA cable 4 Then I changed UDMA Mode of the DTLA-307030 5 to 2 Now I don't know what else I can change to stop the messages. What is the meaning of them? Is this a serious error or sth. I shouldn't worry about? Thanks, Micha
