Hi everybody, I have a Mac G4 Cube (Nov 2000) with an Apple LCD Display (connected through the Apple Display Connector) with the following system * SuSE PPC 7.0 * yaboot 0.8.SuSE * a patched XFree86 Version 4.0.2 * 2.4.2 kernel (k_deflt-2.4.2-2.rpm from SuSE) It all works fine, but after a cold boot the systems comes up normally but the monitor remains off. This problem is also common to Open Firmware; in fact cold booting in OF (alt-apple-O-F) gives the same problem: operational OF (blind typing OF commands produces the expected results) but blank monitor. My solution: cold boot in OS 9.1 (which never fails to switch the monitor on) and reboot in Linux (sometimes iterating the process two or more times until I finally get an ON monitor in Linux). (Notes: this is not an X problem, even the text console or the yaboot prompt is invisible; I already have "output screen" in os-chooser.) Any hints on how to solve the problem? Will a firmware upgrade solve the problem? Will the updated firmware be compatible with my system/kernel/yaboot ? A second, related, question. How do I switch off the monitor with a screen-saver? (Using standard DPMS off-mode give raise to a white screen with backlight on) How can I control display brightness? Thanks to all on this list and to SuSE people. S. bug: Keymap in Suse Linux 7.1 PPC - y and z

When I select mac/mac-dk-latin1 in Yast -> Installation settings -> Select Keymap I expect a Danish keyboard-design, but it seams that Suse mix up the "z" and "y"-key. Is this a bug or do I misunderstand something? ;-) -j

PPC 7.1 woes

Dear all, just installed Suse 7.1 an my PB G3 266 and some issues have come up (sigh) - the 2.4.2 Kernel won't really work even when I use the "No video driver" setting in BootX, X has problems with the display, the graphics looks dithered and hardly readable when the systems starts X using the default setting ("No video driver" unchecked) produces 4 split up start-up screens - under 2.2.18 /lib/modules/2.2.18/pcmcia is missing:-( so loading during booting fails - can I used power management (under those kernels?) - can I used a "normal" WLAN Card (Lucent) with the airport module??? can't get PCMCIA recognized (nothing in proc/devices)

I'm on 7.1 using kernel 2.4.2 on a TiBook. This configuration is stock and should include the PCMCIA drivers, but I'm getting the following during the boot sequence: PCMCIA: using schem: SuSE modprobe: Can't locate module i82365 modprobe: Can't locate module i82365 /lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o: init_module: Operation not permitted /lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o: insmod ds failed cardmgr[216]: starting, version is 3.1.22 PCMCIA: cardmanager is running cardmgr[216]: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices cardmgr[216]: exiting a review of the contents of /proc/devices reveals that there is in fact nothing about pcmcia. Dear all, Spoilage warning: Maybe this has come up before. I can hardly believe this issue has not been adressed before. If so, feel free to ignore. I am currently using Linux on several x86 machines (server, scada systems, workstations, etc) and just recently on an Apple Powerbook G3 Pismo. I have had quite some experience with Linux on Intel machines, but as an old mac fanatic, I just had to try this! And then my Powerbook caught fire... Since I need to keep my kernel version up-to-date , I always try to keep up to the latest release, often even the development kernels. And here comes the sad bit: No problem on those Intel machines, but I have definitely been wasting too much CPU time trying to compile the _official_ kernel sources from Linus and running into issues time and again. Even the default configure runs into errors. This bugs me. Really. I am in awe of Paul, Ben, Cort and many others who do a fantastic job in supplying us with suitable sources for _our_ machines. But this question comes to mind: Why don´t their changes make it into the official tree? Lack of communication? Dumped into the bitbucket by (I know he hates big patches) Linus or Alan? Political issues? Whatsoever. Anyway, how it got there seems absolutely secondary to me: What is more important now, is how these things can be handled in the future and prevent PPC users from having to dig the net for decent kernel sources. I want my 2.4.5-final NOW! One more thing. Congratulations to the SuSE PPC mailinglist. The support is tremendous, quick response from SuSE always guaranteed (Thanks: Olaf, Matze) and the quality of the posted articles is (almost always) amazing. Rock On! KDE 2.1 update?

Hi all, OK. I give up. I've repeatedly tried downloading the KDE 2.1.1 update for SuSE 7.1 (which came with KDE 2.01) and it breaks partway through certain long files every time. After two days of trying every mirror site I can find, I'm throwing in the towel. Has somebody in this group downloaded and saved the KDE 2.1.1 update? Could you please mail me a CD with it? I'll happily reimburse you, of course. I'm using a 56 kbps modem and it's a slow process, even when it works right. Could use some help with SuSE 7.1 and TiBook

I've been having to boot off the CD since I installed this, no matter what I do. Let me run it down and maybe someone can help me. 1. Stock TiBook and normal SuSE 7.1 for PPC installation. I can boot to linux or Mac OS as long as I boot from their CD's. 2. Booting with no CD yields the following message: DEFAULT CATCH!, code=method <draw-rectangle> not found; ihandle=ffbc2a80 phandle=0 3. Does Suse require both yaboot.conf and lilo.conf? The manual seems to indicate this, but LinuxPPC only needs yaboot.conf 4. I've gotten some sample yaboot.conf files from kind folks but it doesn't seem to help. With the Linux CD in the drive I get the 'boot' prompt where I can specify the type and path, which works, but also seems to ignore yaboot.conf and lilo.conf as far as I can see. I would really like to start using Ben's updated kernel, which I've compiled and put in place, but I'm really getting stuck on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am having a real struggle getting ethernet running with Suse Linux 7.1 on my Pismo. On LinuxPPC 2000 it took me five minutes. Question: What type of ethernet-card should I choose in Yast -> System Adm. -> Integrate hardware into system -> Configure network device? - Apple onboard Ethernet mace - Apple onboard Ethernet bmac - Apple onboard Ethernet gmac ? Mac G4 and energy saver settings

The MacOS has a facility under the Energy Saver CP which allows the machine to restart automatically after a power failure. I believe this sets a parameter in the machines PRAM. Is there a way to configure this setting in SuSE PPC? Thanks, Amar

ReiserFS Endian-safe Port Question

Hi, I've got SuSE PPC 2.4.2 kernel sources, SuSE ReiserFS patch, applied patch and succesfully compiled kernel with most drivers built-in rather separate modules. Now I would like to reinstall SuSE PPC on ReiserFS partition. I would like to start installation from suseboot folder located at /macboot HFS partition, not from CD (because boot kernel on CD does not have ReiserFS support). The only question is how to create ReiserFS partition with Yast2, since there is statement in manual that Yast2 do not supports ReiserFS on PPC. Or may be it just checks kernel for presence of ReiserFS code, and will work once they will be found? Can I use my vmlinux kernel instead of original vmlinux located at suseboot (I do not know, may be there is something special in suseboot vmlinux)? Do I need to regenerate ramdisk.image.gz? once again: using any non-onboard NIC under SuSE linux

hello, for the third time i'll report my experiences (?!) on my journey to a working NIC... having tested the smc 9432tx (etherpower II) and the smc 1211 i experienced that both won't work. tested on a pm 8200/120 64/big scsi raid ;)/cd under suse 7.1 ppc. trying to initialize the interface (e.g. via 'rcnetwork restart') results in a hanging machine (blubb -- and away; need for a hard reset). onboard eth works fine (but only 10mb though). ok, so i tried the holy DEC 'Tulip' chipset, the 21143 to be exact -- using the appropriate driver (for 21x4x-cards ;) this results in *lots of* errors on the cli (fortunately, i don't have 'em with me, so that i can't give 'em to you -- perhaps tomorrow...), saying that linux isn't able to initialize that card... so my final question: is there *any* card that runs under (suse) linux ppc? i need at least two additional interfaces (10/100mbit) on that machine! It seems important to follow it *to the letter* - for example, if I leave out the line with "Virtual" then it stops working. Extra twist in SuSE (7.0 PPC): a pesky script (/sbin/init.d/xsfb) wants to reinstate a generic /etc/XF86Config file each time you reboot! To prevent this "feature"(?) from ruining your efforts, you need to edit /etc/rc.config and replace CREATE_FBCONF="yes" by CREATE_FBCONF="no". iMac modem

Hi, I still have no success getting the modem up using a februari 2001 iMac and Suse 7.1. I used the default installed kernel. Yast2 says there is an unrecognized modem, if I use yast to configure dial-up networking and let it probe the modem, it can't find anything. Anybody an idea? thanks, Jaap-Jan

I have seen only patches for 2.4.4 kernel so far. 2) How to properly re-make boot stuff from suseboot folder in order to support RaiserFS: vmlinux (boot kernel), and ramdisk.image.gz (which seem to contain linuxrc/yast install)? 3) If RaiserFS on PowerMac still too "green", anyone tried to use SGI XFS? Mouse button emulation in Gnome

Hello, I am having problems with mouse button emulation with SuSE/Gnome. I sent an email to SuSE support earlier in the week, but I have yet to receive a response. Maybe someone here has run into the same problem. I am running an Apple PowerBook G3/333 (Lombard/Bronze keyboard) with SuSE PPC 7.1 - Kernel 2.4. All packages are the default versions from the PPC 7.1 CD. I have followed the directions from the SuSE web site (http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/poeml_mouse_buttons_emulation.html) and added the following to /etc/init.d/boot.local : echo "1" > /proc/sys/dev/mac_hid/mouse_button_emulation echo "87" > /proc/sys/dev/mac_hid/mouse_button2_keycode # F11 echo "88" > /proc/sys/dev/mac_hid/mouse_button3_keycode # F12 This has enabled mouse emulation in KDE, however when I switch to Gnome the F12 key no longer works as the right button. I have also tried passing the kernel argument: "adb_buttons=103,111" using Yaboot as suggested for other distributions, but that did not work for either KDE or Gnome. I would prefer to use Gnome as my desktop since that is what I am used to on the x86 platform. Can access only access Internet as a Root User

I successfully configured my SuSE Linux 7.1 on my Beige G3/300 to connect to the internet using my DSL connection (DHCP). The problem is that I can only do this as the Root user. I open a terminal window under my regular user account and change to super user. I then type adsl-start and it connects. When I try to launch Netscape or Konquerer as a normal user I get an error message stating that I am not network socket not connected. Although if I run lynx under the terminal window as superuser (root) it connects without a problem. What am I doing wrong? Xavier -- Xavier de Cárdenas xavierdc(a)verizon.net

glibc-2.2-17.ppc.rpm update fails

Hi, has anyone else had any success downloading the updated glibc RPM? I have tried the YaST2 online updater which normally works well for me, but fails after about 600K and so does my browser when I try to download it from there. Trackpad and AirPort on iBook?

Hi all, I've installed SuSE 7.1 on my Indigo iBook (rev. C) and it runs well. As always, there are a few items I'd like to tweak: 1. The trackpad responds to a tap as if I were clicking the mouse. I don't want this feature and once disabled it when I was running LinuxPPC on this machine but have forgotten how I did it. How can I disable tapping on the trackpad and leave only the "click" bar working? 2. I've followed the instructions in the manual to get AirPort working, but no luck so far. Checking for Acceleration

How do I verify that acceleration is working on my machine? I just installed 7.1 (kernel 2.4.2) on a 400 MHz G4 with ATI Rage 128 Pro AGP 2x. It appears all the right drivers are loading in the log files. The r128 driver is supposed to enable acceleration by default with XFree86 4. I've been using XMMS with the open GL graphic analyzer as the test. On my G4 the graphic analyzer "stumbles" along while on my son's G3, with identical setup (accept for graphic card) it hums along quite nice. Is it valid for me to be using XMMS to varify acceleration? or is there a better, more definitive way of testing this. I'm wondering whether acceleration might be on but I've simply screwed up my XMMS installation. Perhaps I'm just a doofus but I never had these "problems" with SuSE 7.0. Thanks for any help, Ola

good and stable NIC for linux?

hy folks, a few weeks ago i posted my trouble with my SMC NICs (9432TX, EtherPower II) to the list -- unfortunately (but thanks to the guys who tried to help me!) i didn't have any success bringing this cards to work... which card should i use now? i need one with a rock stable driver (yip, guess that this is normal) and it should be 'quality ware'... i used to build in two nics (config is 8200/120 with on board ethernet, 10mbit), one for nfs (adressing my sun workstation) and the other for netatalk; the rest should be done by the on board ethernet device... (which works fine). so which card do you use? which would you recommend? tia, timo

hello, sorry for posting my slightly off topic email, but i have a very big problem: since my good ol' power book 100 died yesterday, i have several important data on this tiny hard disk (indeed, it has 20megs... wow!). i have had several 2,5" scsi hd's, but i never had to restore some data from them back to a mac... so i don't know the cable connection (which is data+, gnd etc.). i searched i a little database called 'loeten am mac', there are several listings containing such things -- no go. nothing listet there. it seems to me that using an old style (fast or) asynchronous scsi host adapter (built in every old, i.e. grey mac) should work; the cable to build would -- as far as i can see -- have to supply power to the disk (there are eight (?) pins dedicated for this on the hd). does anyone of you have a 'recipe' for building such a cable? tia, timo

installing and partitions

hallo, i am trying to install suse-linux on powermac 8500/180 - 64mg. macOS 8.1 i hav external 2gig HD : 3: SCSI, 1.91 GB, /dev/sdc, MICROP-4221-09 1128RQAV This is what i attempt to choose for installation. i get: warning: this disk has foreign partitions and must be handled by the custom partitioner. ok+ so, i go to custom: 1. i select drive, 2. YaST2 needs at least one partition to install SuSE Linux: the root "/" partition. Please create this at mountpoint. i initialized the disk. this appears to be a partition issue. evidently, i am in the dark about creating the appropriate partitions. i tried HD primer, which apparently should allow me to create new paritions; howver when i try to create a 40 000k partition (linux boot partition_) i'm told i have not succeeded as a partition need be greater than 400k. 1 have 2 memory options they begin : 0.5 0.5 <- -> the second 0.5 i can increase/change the size of my partition. the first will not allow any alterations. please forgive my naivete about partitions, but might someone point me in the right direction regarding their appropriate creation. thx. zehn
