hello, following up from my message yesterday, I thought I would note a couple of observations concerning mail and SUSE 7.1PPC. The version of fetchmail included has a bug that produces an error saying that the command "AUTH" is not recognised (or something similar). I looked around on the web and this is a known bug in fetchmail. I am now using the latest stable version and all is well again. The buggy version works fine by the way, it just produces the error. I solved my procmail problem by shifting the .procmailrc file into /etc instead of my home folder. I've no idea why that makes any difference but it works for me as I'm the only user on this machine. Just (a week ago) completed my first PPC installation "without" problems and I have dedicated a week browse around the system and figure out what is different between PPC and x86 (this is my first Mac and I like it) But were can I get more software? Freshmeat? Is there a single source were I can find software for SuSE PPC or do I just have to keep on browsing? From the X86 world I am used to find the software I want, but now ... Very little. I am looking for Java developing tools like J builder (yes I like Netbeans, but another would be nice) and and office package like StarOffice is there any out there? If there is very few apps for PPC and there is very little effort to port more. What can be done to change this situation (yes I know I can do it my self :-) I am basically trying to find out some more about the PPC community I know this questions have probably been answered several times, but I am brand new to PPC Regards Even

hello out there, i have lots of trouble trying to use my second eth interface under suse linux, both 6.4 and 7.1. this is concerning my home server (and every other mac i set up with suse linux 'til now) with the following unspectacular config: power mac 8200/120, one 1,2gb scsi hd (apple built in), one 4,5gb scsi hd (/home), 64 megs of ram (ok ok, it's not my g4 with 1gig ;), on board 10mbit eth (=eth0, works fine unless its pretty slow), one smc etherpower 10/100 (9432TX/MP) via the 'epic 100' module. (if i does work after your hints i guess i'll give it a second to manage nfs for my sun machine... ;) this seems to be pretty normal. everything works fine until you try to activate this smc card to work as the eth1 interface -- there's no difference trying device eth0 for the card. restarting the network (to enable eth1=smc) results in a hanging machine which is not only dead on the console, but also doesn't answer pings nor is reachable via telnet. you have to reset the machine. ***my question now is: did anyone successful use this card under (suse) linux?*** i tried to use this card on a power mac with netbsd -- no problem there... because it's a pretty good card, i think ;) tia for your answers and greetz, timo (aka Pansen)

Hi, as i connected an USB barcode reader on the USB-port, i got the following error message: unresolved symbol mac_hid_mouse_emulate_buttons unresolved symbol macv_hid_keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes insmod /lib/modules/2.4.2/kernel/drivers/input/keybdev.o failed insmod keybdev failed i'm using an iBook with SuSE 7.1 and Kernel 2.4.2 What can i do to let it work ? PM 9600 and 7.1

Much to my shock and surprise, when I purchased SuSE 7.0, it was only -after- I made the purchase that I found out that the kernel as shipped didn't support both PCI busses in my PM 9600. So now, I guess I have to ask: is it supported? I can't, for the life of me, find an entry in any of the knowledgebases, so I'm wondering- anyone out there know? Alexei

I just recently got my retail copy of SuSE 7.1 for PowerPC. I could not boot my CD1 via open firmware on a rev. B iMac and my iBook 333. Has anyone having these problems, If you do please post what New World PowerMac you have on this thread. Old world Macs are invited to post too. MOL causing kernel panics

Hi, I've just updated to suse 7.1, with the 2.2.18 kernel. I've got an iMac 350 (slot-loading) with 320 MB RAM. Suse is on a 2.5 GB partition, Mac OS 9.1 & 10.0.1 are on a 4 GB hfs+ partition. I've tried running MOL (version 0.9.53 from the Suse 7.1 disks) but it always fails to startup. I usually don't mind hacking around to get to root of the problem, but now I'm finding that MOL is causing kernel panics about half the time I run it, and it's no longer fun. Is this normal? I guess MOL needs low-level system access to work, but if it's going to be crashing my system I may as well just boot into Mac OS 9.1. reformat ext2 to hfs

Hi Is there a quick way to reformat an ext2 partition to hfs to give access to MacOS? To make it more difficult ;-) the partition contains Suse 7 and is located on hda9 (last partition). The MacOS 9.1 startupvolume is on the same disk. I want to get access from MacOS without reformatting the complete hd with "Laufwerke konfigurieren". I already tried with pdisk, but neither MacOS nor Linux seems to be impressed of the canges I made. I deleted hda9, so theoretically, Linux should be gone, but it still starts without problems... thanx in advance Serge

KDE2.2.1 installation problem

Hi. I'm trying to install KDE 2.1.1 from the packages in ftp.suse.com, including the various development RPMs. I do this with rpm from the command line, not giving up on dependencies, because I found out that it's a bad habit to give them up... Anyways, when attempting to install kdebase-devel, it complains that it depends on alsadev. Nice going, but where do I find alsadev? Not on the original CDs, not on the Suse ftp server, not on rpmfind.net. Can anybody point me in the right direction? My SuSE is PPC/7.0. Hi, I just bought Suse Linux 7.1 PowerPC Edition and read in the manual my Mac is not supported because of new firmware. (I have a february 2001 iMac) (on the box it is stated it *might* not be supported) Does somebody know what this means? Will it not work at all or will it work most of the time but you can't get support if something is not working. If it will not work at all, will it be supported soon (and how, can I get a new first Suse CD to boot with a new kernel or something?) many thanks, Jaap-Jan

speaker buzzing and KDE upgrade

hello, Well, I can't seem to find out why my speaker and volume channels are buzzing but it certainly started just after an upgrade to KDE 2.1.1. I have noticed that if i change virtual desktops, and the contrast of the screen changes, then the buzzing changes pitch, too. if anyone has any ideas as to what is going on, I'd be very grateful. KDE 2.1.1 and sound (buzzing!)

Hi, I've just updated to the latest KDE and now I get a buzzing in the speaker channel of my iMac DV SE. The only way I can get rid of the buzzing is to mute the speaker but that doesn't do a lot for my audio listening pleasure..... Any advice? If you have 7.0, then it is explained in the README on CD1. Alternatively, you could search the online suse support database for keyword 'mouse emulation'. Apples on-disk program does not allow changing partition. I refuse to use a commercial partitioning software (they keep insisting that you use their software in all future) and the MacOS9.1 CD cannot be used as a startup disk on the TiBook (works perfectly as startup disk on my old 6400). LinuxPPC2000 Q4 does work as startup disk, but hangs after 5 lines with booting .... What shall I try next to get any sort of Linux installed? Heinz

CD-Rom troubles in Linuxrc when installing SuSe 7.1

Hi, I am new to SuSe and new to this list. I searched the backnumbers of this list for something relevant, but nothing showed up. I guess I need a bit of help now: I am trying to install SuSe PPC 7.1 on my OLDWORLD Umax Apus 2000, via BootX, as it should be. Booting into Linux is successful, all my Hardware is detected by the kernel, so everything looks OK until Linuxrc comes into play. Somewhere (that is, it seems that there is no really exact point of time) before or after the first GUI dialog asking to choose between text-based or GUI based installation, the connection to the CD-Rom seems to get lost. Shortly later, I get an error message saying that an error had occured. If I try to move on installing - that is, if the system does not already hang at that point - YaST shows a message like "Trying to mount the CD-Rom", and when I am lucky, after several ages I get an error message that the operation failed, but mostly the message hangs there for several minutes/forever with no reading sound of the device. Reading sound of the device, however, can be heard well into Linuxrc's doing its hardware checking. To be more specific, this is the relevant extract from the kernel messages: Detected scsi CD-Rom sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 3, lun 0 So the built in Matsushita CD-Rom drive was clearly correctly detected. After detecting usb devices etc., at the very end of the messages I have (twice, that is) VFS : Disk change detected on device sr(11,0) Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. scsi disk I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0 The odd thing is, that neither was there a disk change nor is the CD missing from the drive. The CD-Rom is the only device on the bus, my internal HD is IDE. I experimented with sr0=noautotune, but to no avail. I tried an older kernel from a LinuxPPC distribution I had successfully installed on the same machine with the same hardware configuration about a year ago, but never used it afterwards, but again no success. (I still can boot into this Linux installation, but I forgot my password, since I never used it.) Ideas anybody? Any help is greatly appreciated. Wrong keymap on X-Windows on G3 PowerBook

Hello, Having just installed SUSE 6.4 on a 400MHz G3 Powerbook (Model 1999, Bronze keys), I have a problem with the keymap on X-Windows: When running without X-Windows the keymap is OK. Choosing US or German map via Yast works as expected. When I perform startx, the keymap changes: Typing into an open console (bash) will show that the keys are mapped so that the beginning of the uppermost row (numbers) corresponds to the quwerty row, the other keys have an inconsisten mapping, difficult to relate here. I am using the default installation and configuration that comes with the 6.4 release of SUSE Linux. I have Apple USB mouse enabled, which works with an external USB mouse but not the built-in Mouse-Pad of the PowerBook. Please help me be able to use my PowerBook with SUSE Linux and X-Windows. Hello, I am trying (again) to get cd audio working on my Summer 2000 iMac DV SE. There is lots of info around concerning digital audio on the new Macs but none of it seems to work for me. What does one do, exactly, to play audio CDs on SUSE? It would be great to finally resolve this. The README in 7.0 said that it is now possible but neither 7.0 nor 7.1 work for me using xmms and the cdread plugin, nor cdparanoia. kernel panic

After instalation of SuSE Linux 7.0 PowerPC Edition the error message appears after booting the kernel Partition check sdb: sdb1 sdb2 sdb3 request_module [block_major_15]: Root fs not mounted VFS CXannot open root device 0f:d0 kernel panic VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 0f:d0 Rebooting in 180 seconds. I have PowerPC G3 266MHz and 2 external SCSI drive 1. Quantum 500MB 2. Compaq DDRS-34560W I have 3 partition on Compaq disk /boot, /swap and / I chose in BootX App sdb3 as root partition When I sart again from ramdisk image and chose boot instaled system it starts good. Ricochet usb modem? Pismo powerbook usb support?

Here comes post #2 for the day. =] Anyone have suse 7.0 running up-to-spec on a pismo powerbook? I'm having great trouble with a usb modem. I tried upgrading the kernel to 2.4, etc. It's a ricochet wireless modem, it uses standard AT modem commands. It will dial and so fourth, but pppd craps out when wvdial tries to fire it up. Any help is greatly appreciated, -taylor
