Suse still immature

Hi everyone, I have an iMac DV special edition at home. I have bought Suse Linux 6.4 for the PPC thinking I could install Linux for the MAC. I am a seasoned Linux User on the Intel Platform. But oh what shock and oh what a Shame this Suse is. I followed the instructions to the letter in the manual , in the Readme file and on their support Website. Yaboot does not boot, I get a lot of Lost Interrupt Messages while booting off the CD, takes a mighty long time to detect my hardware , takes an even longer time to load the image into the virtual RAM and wham hangs the system. Even Windoze is better at installation than Suse. To make matters worse, on their support Website at http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/rschmid_ppc_installation.html there is an instruction that the following file should be download: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/update/BETA/kernel/k_pmac-2.2.16-14.ppc.rpm click on the link and what do you get: No such file or directory. Isn't it great!!!! Keep it up Suse!!!! May be I being a technical journalist myself should publish this great news to all the LUGs and also in technical magazines that there do exist blacksheep like Suse even in the fascinating world of Linux. We are all paying customers and Suse better learn to honor its commitments to us. I do hope Suse will take note of this message seriously and solve my problems. By the way, I live in Singapore. Suse has a long way to go before it can be classified as a major distribution. I even have Suse 6.3 for Intel (This came with a magazine) and I have problems installing that.... my video card Trident 9660 is not recoginized. Suse better learn from distributions like RedHat and Mandrake on what it takes to be a leader and a major distribution. Hope Suse will take care of my problem. Hi I installed Suse 6.4 on my Power150 It was working fine until today... All I did was shut the server down....unplug the server and the external drives...plug everthing back in and turn it on.... The Suse system did not want to boot :-( I looked at my BootX screen and my kernel args were gone!!! Does anyone have any basic kernel args that I could try? There is absolutely NO help on the Suse Site Cheers MARCUS

Problem with sound on G4

Recently intalled SuSe 6.4 eval on my G4 and it went real smoothly but I'm having trouble getting sound to work correctly. I'm using 2.2.14 I did the RTFM at http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/olh_ppc_sound.html and loaded dmasound. I also added /sbin/insmod dmasound to /sbin/init.d/boot.local. I can now hear the modem dial through the speakers when I use wvdial and I can hear the beep when I click on "Test" in the KDE control center, but I can't hear the system sounds. When I try to play a .wav from the command line I get: phildo@linux:~ > play /opt/kde/share/apps/ksmiletris/wav/break.wav sox: File type 'ossdsp' of /dev/dsp file is not known! I am a newbie at this and woiuld really appretiate it if someone could share some ideas or if anyone else had the same prob, what was the fix? Thanks, Phil

/etc/profile contains alias unix2dos='recode lat1..ibmpc' alias dos2unix='recode ibmpc..lat1' Not that I know how it works, but I can see how I can use it. Who volunteers for aliases unix2mac mac2unix ? Heinz

All these did not work for me on the Performa 6400/200. After a complete re-installation of 6.4, mouse button emulation works now fine with control + mouse click: right mouse button command + mouse click: middle mouse button Heinz

I am still having problems with middle/ right mouse button emulation on my Performa 6400/200. CASE 1: ------- Standard SuSE 6.4 installation from CDs: Linux XXX 2.2.14 #1 Tue May 30 01:15:50 GMT 2000 ppc unknown Linux version 2.2.14 (root(a)PMAC.suse.de) (gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)) #1 Tue May 30 01:15:50 GMT 2000 with /proc/sys/dev/ |-- adbmouse | `-- button_emulation |-- cdrom | `-- info |-- mac_keyb | |-- adbiso_conversion | |-- adbkbd_debug | `-- shift_conversion `-- usbmouse `-- button_emulation After hours of experimentation, I got there: middle/ right mouse button are realized by COMMAND (Apple) + mouse click for middle button CONTROL + mouse click for right mouse button. You have to very quick with the command/ control key. This is the other way round than the description in my SuSE 6.4 manual. Also: there is no use for the OPTION key, different from various pieces of advice (e.g. from SuSE support). All this might be otherwise on other boxes. CASE 2: ------- Upgraded to 2.2.15pre20 This is my preferred version, because I have a precompiled kernel/module pair for running Mac-on-Linux. Hi folks! Can anyone please tell me, which keys I have to press to emulate the 2nd/3rd mouse-button? I somehow changed that on my old PowerBook and now that I got a new one I can't find the config file anymore where I have to set this... Why should code size be 2x larger in SuSE?

970572017.tar.gz produced with suse_hw_info.sh after the installation of SuSE 6.4 Linux PowerPC on my Performa 6400/200 for insertion into ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/update/BETA/devel/machines/apple_performa64…. Most all things are running fine on the Performa (except middle/right mouse button emulation). What is ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/update/BETA/devel/machines/apple_performa640 0_200/ meant for? It does not contain anything, but SuSE 6.4 for PowerPC is running fine on my Performa 6400/200- except that I cannot emulate middle/right mouse buttons. Heinz
