Tumbleweed - first Rolling updates from an extra repo, then pure Rolling throughout Leap - SLE base with community packages The structure, role, and content of Leap 15 would be no different than if we numbered it differently, so there is absolutely no grounds for renaming the distribution. The number is not a 'major' change. Leap is still going to be developed the same was tomorrow as we planned for the last three years regardless of the number assigned to it. It's going to work the same way. The only change is that it will be a lot easier to clearly see the link between SLE versions and Leap versions, which is important to advertise given the shared SLE core is the whole unique selling point of Leap compared to every other distribution in the world, including every other openSUSE distribution past and present. And this easier, simplified versioning will be easier to package for when cross building packages from multiple openSUSE and SLE distributions, which we all know has been a topic of some debate in the past. Changing the version number is quite enough at the moment, I have no desire to entertain the thought of changing anything else around the naming of one of our flagship offerings. Hi, With all the passionate discussions recently it has been a bit quiet around 42.3 lately. That doesn't mean work on it has stopped. Quite the contrary is the case. Meanwhile most of the SLE12SP3 packages are integrated. So we're mostly in sync with SLE in the base system. The kernel stays at 4.4 as planned but it got a whole bunch of bug fixes and backported features in 42.3. Starting from build 169 Leap also inherited the updated desktop selection dialog from Tumbleweed that makes it easier to enable the online repo and install 2nd tier desktop environments. The dialog still has a default and will keep it ... :-) Cleanup of the patterns is still work in progress for Tumbleweed though, so hasn't reached Leap yet either. After several submission rounds of packages from Tumbleweed we've exceeded 10000 sources packages and are still counting. If you miss your favorite package in Leap still, please make sure it's in Factory and successfully builds for Leap too. Don't hesitate to submit to openSUSE:Leap:42.3 yourself if that's the case. The goal is to have 42.3 mostly feature complete before the conference so we can concentrate on bug fixing afterwards. The automatic release mechanism is working as expected, so the 42.3 repo and DVDs are released as soon as openQA gives the go¹. Even though there are still some red tests the release is quite safe to use at this point already IMO. Automatic announcements similar to the ones used for Tumbleweed are in the works to remind everyone to zypper dup. Apart from testing the distro and making sure we have all the package in the state we want there's also some work to do in the wiki². For example to create separate pages for 42.3. Also, there are quite some build failures in 42.3³. Hello, With some guidance from Michael Schroeder, I'd like to propose a few changes to RPM for Factory / Tumbleweed in time for SLE 15. * Backport the --changes option from RPM git master to rpm 4.13. This is a very simple change that exposes RPM's changelog data with full timestamps. Previously, the commit to support changelogs with full timestamps was backported for reproducible builds work, but the commits for users to access that information easily was not. This is a trivial change, as it merely adds a popt definition and extends the man page to include info on the new parameter. * Change the default binary package payload compression algorithm from old-lzma to xz. Apparently, this change was supposed to have already happened some time ago, but it didn't. This change is simple and brings openSUSE in line with Red Hat Enterprise Linux/CentOS/Fedora and Mageia, as both use xz payloads now. Packages compressed with old-lzma will still be readable by rpm, and even packages compressed with xz will be readable by SLES 12 / OpenSUSE Leap 42 systems. * Define %_sharedstatedir as /var/lib instead of /usr/com. The current path for shared state content (/usr/com) isn't recognized by FHS, whereas /var/lib is recognized as suitable for this purpose, and is currently used as such by Red Hat Enterprise Linux/CentOS/Fedora; Mageia; and Debian/Ubuntu systems. This is expected to be a trivial change, as the /usr/com path has been broken for years and isn't even really used by anything. * Revert %_libexecdir to /usr/libexec. Currently, openSUSE overrides rpm to define %_libexecdir as /usr/lib, which leads to pollution of the /usr/lib directory with executable content as well as 64-bit content when there shouldn't be any. This path has been in use on Red Hat Enterprise Linux/CentOS/Fedora and Mageia systems in the Linux world, but has its origins in BSD and is still used today in BSDs and variants (like Mac OS X). The usage of /usr/libexec for libexec content has also finally been recognized by FHS with v3.0, released in 2015. This is a breaking change, as it means that as packages are rebuilt, libexec content *should* migrate from /usr/lib to /usr/libexec. The major advantage of migrating the libexec content is that it will make openSUSE consistent with other major RPM-based Linux distributions, and ease efforts in supporting SLE/openSUSE Leap/openSUSE Tumbleweed alongside Red Hat/CentOS/Fedora by removing the need for hacks and tweaks to support two different hierarchies. With the exception of the --changes backport, all of these proposed changes are geared towards improving compatibility across RPM-based Linux distributions, particularly the two commercial ones: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise. I believe that by doing this, we can make it easier for people to be encouraged to support SLE/openSUSE as a first class platform alongside Red Hat/CentOS/Fedora for FOSS and commercial software. Hello, first of all I must say this request is not related to "default DE" issue. >From many years ago up to current release, openSUSE provides a 4.4GB ISO image for DVD and offline installation, and one Net Install ISO image less than 100MB. This approach has many big problems: 4.4GB image: =========== * It is very huge and hard to get for most people specially who are in un-developed and in-development countries who have the low-bandwidth and limited-traffic internet service. * It is wasting the network traffic and bandwidth for both users and openSUSE servers, because not all the software in the ISO image used by users. Most users usually installs only one DE. Net Install image: ================= * It needs to internet and huge data to get for *every* install. If users want to install openSUSE on 2-3 different systems or on different partitions of Hard Disk, they need to internet and huge data to get for every installation.
