[opensuse-factory] acpid requires systemd?

Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. Having logs recorded in a non-text binary format tends to make MS logs out-a-sight, out-a-mind, where as I often go and poke around in /var/log and look to see if I notice anything 'new'. Hi: Will be cool if rpmlint could warn when upstream packages attempt to use the -ansi gcc option because it inhibits usage of gcc builtin functions while optimizing (list here --> http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Other-Builtins.html#Other-Builtins) most recently it caught my attention that it also disables the new "optimize-strlen" pass in gcc 4.7, in particular this: "for hosted compilations where stpcpy is available in the runtime and headers provide its prototype, e.g. void foo (char *a, const char *b, const char *c, const char *d) { strcpy (a, b); strcat (a, c); strcat (a, d); } can be optimized into: void foo (char *a, const char *b, const char *c, const char *d) { strcpy (stpcpy (stpcpy (a, b), c), d); } " when -ansi is used and (defined(_GNU_SOURCE) || (_XOPEN_SOURCE >= 700 || _POSIX_C_SOURCE >= 200809L)) is false, there is no stpcpy prototype and hence no optimization. Hi, This is also related to the "Coolo needs help thread". During osc12 we had various discussions related to the topic of getting the distribution out the door and how we can get there within the release schedule that we had agreed to a while back. Part of this discussion are the two sessions I had the opportunity to lead, both are available on youtube opensusetv, if you are interested in this topic please go and watch these sessions, as well as Stephan's session, also on youtube. Unfortunately we did not have video equipment in the BoF session. The basic proposal is, and this received general agreement at osc12, that we will move toward changing the model as proposed in the session. This implies the following: - In the web UI one will no longer see inherited project maintainers on the package page, only the "true" package maintainers. (Inherited "maintainers" will be hidden in an expandable tree) - We will collect information about all packages in all devel projects that feed factory. We will generate a list of packages that have no maintainer, and a list of packages that need help, i.e. a package that has fewer than 5 maintainers. In addition we will list packages that have more than 5 maintainers and try to encourage maintainers from those packages (to get the number to 5) to take on packages that need help. - We want to clean up the devel project maintainer list to a ratio of 10/500 packages with a max of 25. ~ In many cases package maintainers in a given project do not care about all the other packages in the project, yet they are on the project maintainer list. ~ Also many people have their Hermes notifications disabled as they get too many messages about packages they do not care, hopefully with the changes more people will re-enable their Hermes notifications (more on this below) - We would like to see a notification on the package page if the package fails to build in factory - Would like to see package build status information on the factory status page about the status of the package in it's devel project. - Having the monitor page and the status page presented in the current form is confusing, we need to somehow merge the information. - It would be really nice if there were some kind of policy engine that could enforce the "no more than 5 per package" and the "no more than 25 project maintainers" policies. ~ now OBS is not just for openSUSE, thus this cannot be hard coded into the OBS code, thus this is potentially a lot of work. - We would like to have some kind of rating system on the devel projects - We will produce guidelines for package and product maintainers outlining what is expected. ~ These guidelines are not hard rules, but provide help to new people stepping in to define the role they are comfortable with. There appears to be a problem that the complete void of guidelines in this area leads to paralysis and people just do not know what to do if they want to help. We have documents how to package, these guidelines will be a hopefully short list of "what is expected". These are the rough outlines of the "plan". Obviously there is work to be done and the OBS team already has plenty to do. It is up to me to document in more detail the requirements/use case before a potential timeline can be developed. I will also start a wiki page attempting to define the various roles in the devel process and then opening that up for discussion once the basics are in place. Now to a couple of counter points. - Yes we will step on some people's toe, sorry. Meaning if you get removed as project maintainer from a devel project and you really really want to be a project maintainer you are probably not going to be happy. Please do not take it personal and get yourself added back to the project. Preferably you would find one of the project maintainers that remained, by chance and chance alone, and get that person to drop of the list. Chances are you will find someone willing to "make space for you" ~ Sorry, but this process has to be somewhat arbitrary due to the large number on the various devel projects. ~ Please be not offended, there is no vicious intent, just the intent to help the project grow and scale better. - Yes, the "rules" are changing, and if you maintain a package that is also in factory there will now be some expectations ~ In the end we all should have the same goal, create a quality distro in the time frame we promise, thus this should really not be a big deal Before I close this rather long e-mail (sorry) I have a kind of survey question. I would like to have the hermes settings of package maintainers reset "automatically" as we move through the house keeping project such that package maintainers get notification of build failures of their packages. I realize many people have these turned off today, but again, this is probably due to the number of notifications due to the project maintainer mails that most people do not care about. Perhaps someone can explain to me why Windows doesn't need a pre-boot ramdisk in order to boot, while Linux does? I know Windows doesn't have all the drivers for all the hardware linked in with it's kernel -- it's dynamically loaded out of it's "/bin (windows/sytem32)" dir. So why does the linux kernel have this extra complication while windows does not? It's a bit embarrassing, I would think to see the wide range of HW supported by Windows **without** a special 'initrd' for drivers, while linux still doesn't support the range of HW that Windows does (some, but not ALL of that being due to short-sited HW providers who can't provide open specs or drivers). So what is Windows doing 'right', that Linux is unable to do? Hi, on my machine, kwin reliably crashes upon logout. It looks exactly like https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252817, but the workaround given in comment 181 does not resolve the problem (and it should not be needed anyway, since UnredirectFullscreen=false has been the default for some time). Anyone else seeing this? Also, (this might or might not be related), when the screen stays locked overnight, the locking window will not disappear upon unlocking -- it is no longer functional, and clicks seem to go right through, but it is still very visible. I need to disable debuginfo packages for package ghc as ghc does not produce DWARF output. Even though I disabled debuginfo packages in my spec file using %global debug_packages %{nil} debuginfo packages are still generated and the package build fails for unpackaged files. What is the correct way of fixing this? Note: Package ghc creates several sub-packages that contain shared libraries and rpm generates debuginfo for those too. Currently python3 provides a python3-base package, which contains the core interpreter and commonly-used modules, python3, which depends on python3-base and contains less-used modules, and a few packages that contain more specialized modules (like tk or ncurses). The problem is that there are a lot of python3 packages that depend on just one of the modules in the python3 package. This currently requires the package to depend on the whole python3 package, which takes additional space, is more difficult to maintain, and devs keep removing it without checking whether the build actually works afterwards. I think it is important to have these packages depend only on the module that they actually need, to make it more clear what is needed. I see two ways to handle this: 1. Make python3 provide the modules it includes (like python3-hashlib and python3-sqlite). This would not be at all intrusive. 2. Split the modules into separate packages and then have the python3 package depend on them. This could cause problems if there are dependencies between the modules I am not aware of. My thinking is that for python 12.1 and 12.2 we release a patch that adds the provides, while for 12.3 we split the packages. Packagers wouldn't need to care, they would just use the buildrequires or requires for the module they need. It is no longer called, but worse, trying to add it, I am told: #chkconfig boot.local on insserv: Note: sysvinit service boot.local is shadowed by systemd local.service, Forwarding request to '/bin/systemctl --root / enable local.service'. Operation failed: No such file or directory insserv: Forward service request to systemctl returned error status : 256 insserv: script name boot.local is not valid, skipped! ==== Great -- boot.local isn't valid? Yet it is the same header and format as the rest. It loaded modules and set the font/tty cuz it doesn't get set right by systemd when one does a warm reboot. Now it doesnt' get called at all, and the drivers not loading caused systemd to hang and the sytem not to come up... wonderful! and this is in SuSE 12.1?? I deliberately enabled the break key in 'boot'.... - so if the system hung during boot, I could press break and interrupt boot and fix it. now.. it's locked out. [opensuse-factory] Chromium browser has returned to it's openSUSE uhome location

Dear openSUSE Users, Last week, I send out the message that it was no longer possible to build Chromium on the openSUSE OBS. This due to issues with ffmpeg, etc. Due to the big help of Ludwig Nussel, we resolved the issues and I can now inform you that we are building Chromium again in it's old location and that we will continue shipping Chromium with openSUSE. A new subpackage was introduced (chromium-ffmpegsumo) that builds a restricted form of the multimedia library required by Chromium. This library supports all the opensource codecs. On Packman we continue to build the chromium-ffmpeg package that contains the same multimedia library, but then with support for more proprietary codecs (equal to the ones supported by the official Chrome browser). If you install the chromium-ffmpeg package, then automatically the new chromium-ffmpegsumo package will be deinstalled. This is the correct behavior. I would like to thank Ludwig again for his help in resolving this matter. As a reminder: The Chromium browser is build in the network:chromium repository and from there updates to Factory and maintenance updates for 12.2/12.1 are shipped. I would like to apologize for the inconvienence this might cause due to swapping the repositories. [opensuse-factory] New visual theme for KDE

Hello everyone, this mail is meant to present and discuss the work done by a number of openSUSE contributors for a new visual style for KDE. A number of weeks ago, people in the #opensuse-kde channel started hacking on a new theme for KDE, which should have sported the iconic green of the distro. Alin suggested during a discussion to base the work on the Produkt theme[1]. At that point, the openSUSE contributor shumski (as he's known in IRC) started working on that, also taking a look at the icon set needed for the theme. Due to the KDE team's decision of bringing the 4.10 version of the KDE Platform, Applications and Workspaces for 12.3, shumski also made adjustments to handle the slight differences that took place between 4.9 and 4.10 with regards to theming. A very early draft was published in my blog[2] since I wanted to make the process hopefully open and communicate to the community what those people were doing. The overall impressions were positive and work continued. Recently, this theme was also pushed to KDE:Distro:Factory and then to Factory itself as one of the possible candidate themes for 12.3. I also blogged showing the new look[3]. At this point, we felt necessary to gather the feedback of a larger part of the openSUSE contributors, hence this mail. We're interested in how this can be integrated with the ongoing work of the artwork team and in general taking account of all feedback, good or bad. So, give it a spin (it is in KDE:Distro:Factory or Factory itself, the KDF version is however more up to date) and let us know what you think. At the moment this theme is the default opensuse branding theme for KDE (so you will get it with the *-branding-openSUSE KDE packages). I've packaged current glibc git version (release planned before Christmas) and like to submit it to Factory now - and update it until the release. Looking at the changes, we receive a lot of bugfixes but I'm not aware of any expected breakage due to it. Coolo, do you want to setup a staging project first or shall I submit via Base:System to Factory directly? The package is building in my project home:a_jaeger:devel-glibc right now. Andreas P.S. The NEWS file lists these changes: * Bugfixes * Port to ARM AArch64 contributed by Linaro. * Support for STT_GNU_IFUNC symbols added for s390 and s390x. Optimized versions of memcpy, memset, and memcmp added for System z10 and zEnterprise z196. Implemented by Andreas Krebbel. * The new function secure_getenv allows secure access to the environment, returning NULL if running in a SUID/SGID process. This function replaces the internal function __secure_getenv. * SystemTap static probes have been added into the dynamic linker. At least grep failed the gnulib test-fwrite test - and this is a regression introduced by glibc. If any of your packages also fails due to test-fwrite of gnulib, ignore the failure for now. Hello How do you allow connections from 127.0.0.1 to apache2 I get this error [1]. I have these rpms installed [2]and using factory. What else needs to be altered ? Firewall settings ? Hi, for reason independent on me I did a clean install of factory... net install last iso of 25th of November... and then I have updated all nicely to factory... [opensuse-factory] KDE rebuilds in Tumbleweed

Now that KDE is back in Tumbleweed it seems to rebuild almost daily. Even if that was intended, why does it also rebuild the noarch packages (all the artwork, icons and stuff) that surely never change? And if OBS absolutely must rebuild them, should they be packaged and delivered each time, with presumably the same content (the file sizes always differ by a few bytes, which seems to be logging information) and just a different label? Hi all, I saw quite a few packages fail to build in games for Factory due to a missing GL/glu.h this is provided by glu-devel. Since recently up to and including openSUSE 12.2 Mesa-devel has a requirement for Mesa-libGLU-devel. This package doesn't exist any more. This dependency can now be solved by glu-devel. I wonder has the dependency been removed accidentally or is it planned. If it's not planned it no use to fix involved packages. i was trying to fix some problems in network connectivity, so I'm not sure 100% if the problem was in samba -- but it appeared to be trying to make use of port 1024 for some ep or com like function (didn't get exact message -- was another boot time error that I saw.. not sure if it was samba trying to use a a port that's already allocated for local use, or some other problem. Only think I saw in the source was 1024-65535 being for user-level usage (vs. root), but didn't see anything that should have been using it. Is there anything in suse's configs that's trying to make use of this port? DKMS currently is using /etc/SuSEconfig to detect whether it is running on SUSE. As I understand SuSEconfig is scheduled to be removed entirely. What is the proper way to detect distribution? I would use /etc/SuSE-release, but may be there were reasons to use SuSEconfig in the first place. DKMS needs to know distribution to decide e.g. whether it needs to do kernel source preparation or it can skip it. Heya, I bought that plugable multiseat stuff: http://plugable.com/products/ud-160-a/ This worked with udlfb in Fedora 17 and with udl in Fedora 18. The multiseat feautures in systemd were not included in openSUSE 12.2, but in 12.3 thanks to Frederic Crozat's work on systemd. It seems that loginctl correctly spawns a new seat with all device attached to the plugable station and screen shows up, but it is all green (AFAIK this is good and only confirms that driver has been loaded successfully), but it doesn't spawn any gdm/X entity. One more thing: "lsmod | grep udl" shows that both udl and udlfb are loaded, is this intended? dmesg shows udlfb loading and choosing the correct resolution for the monitor. My opinion is that the problem is the different version number of rpms. Hello, I am trying to setup the package 'cacti' according to instructions listed at [1] but it seems the instructions are out of date, and I need some help with some final steps. [1]http://en.opensuse.org/Cacti -I have added this repository: zypper ar http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/server:/monitoring/openSUSE_F… server:monitoring - I have installed these packages: cacti-0.8.8a-12.3.noarch.rpm cacti-spine-0.8.8a-7.11.x86_64.rpm Apache Configuration - I have setup /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/cacti.conf The next steps I am stuck because the directory /usr/share/cacti/ does not exist as listed in the instructions but the directory /srv/www/cacti/ does exist, after the install of cacti-0.8.8a-12.3.noarch.rpm Should refrences in the documentation be updated from /usr/share/cacti/ to /srv/www/cacti/ Apache and mysql both work. Its all on localhost 127.0.0.1 I think my cacti configuration files are not all configured to get cacti going. Any suggestions on what cacti configuration files to check next. Can someone please update/check the outdated instructions/documentation listed at [1] please. If this is posted to the incorrect list can it be forwarded to the correct list for action please. After some recent Factory changes LightDM cannot shut down/restart/suspend/hibernate any more, more specifically calling SuspendAllowed, HibernateAllowed on org.freedesktop.UPower and CanRestart, CanStop on org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager from the greeter session always returns false. Fedora seems to have the same problem and their LightDM maintainers have added new PolicyKit rules (see http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/lightdm.git/tree/lightdm.rules) _unconditionally_ authorizing the lightdm user to use the above interfaces. However, in the accompanying discussion (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=872797 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=857254) they seem rather confused and the only given rationale is that this makes things work. Currently adding these workaround rules also does not have any effect on openSUSE since our PolicyKit daemon for some reason does not load this crazy javascript plugin despite libmozjs185-1_0 being installed (I see the following error in the logs: polkitd[504]: Error opening libmozjs185.so. This is not a fatal error but polkit .rules files will not be evaluated. [opensuse-factory] Chromium browser has changed it's home location

Dear openSUSE users, Since this morning, the Chromium browser will no longer be maintained on the openSUSE OBS, nor will it be provided together with the openSUSE distribution. Instead the Chromium browser will be build on Packman and be available for the already supported openSUSE versions. This new version will replace the chromium-ffmpeg package that was already delivered through Packman. In the next days, I will delete the Chromium package from it's home location network:chromium and also send a delete request to openSUSE:Factory. The reason for this change is that ffmpeg support is becoming more and more integrated with the browser itself, making it very hard to remove the ffmpeg related sourcefiles and still keeping a workable browser. In the last few weeks, I tried everything to keep Chromium part of the openSUSE distribution but unfortunately I failed. And as we all know ffmpeg is one of those packages that are not allowed to be present on the openSUSE OBS. Therefore the only logical decision was to move Chromium completely to Packman. The new package will be a full enabled Chromium with build-in support for ffmpeg. The new version 25.0.1329 is already available from Packman and should be installed automatically as that it replaces the chromium-ffmpeg package. If not, please check manually in order to get the latest version from Packman. This should be a one-time manual intervention. Right now it's built in openSUSE:Tumbleweed:Testing and seems to work for me, but it would be great if someone who really knows (and uses) KDE to actually test it out to verify it's all sane. So far no one is able to explain why it is needed other than It's a fad or it's cool.. You have a 20MB RAM disc that you think you have to load and do secret things before you start my OS. I have a 12GB root disk (and RH/Fedora on their "Excuses for UsrMerge page, claims to need 400GB in root?! Talk about a broken model to be following!) Never the less, a 14 GB root with over 50% free.. and What, can't I put on my root hard disk that you have to have initrd? The drivers on my kernel are built-in. You are deliberately making people use a ram disk for no reason. Give me ANY reason. and don't say it's to mount /usr A "toy /usr/ that is not the full /usr partition lives on your ram disk in less than 20MB, I can throw away that much space in a 'dummy /usr' that the real /usr mounts over. It would be preferable to having to read all of it from disk and duplicating it 12 times for the 12 kernels I had in lilo when I last cleaned it out of initrd's that don't get used. Not only are you duplicating the space of all the utils in /usr that you need to put (ONLY because you moved them from /bin.. which if you hadn't done you wouldn't need to to copy them all to /usr). I read the /usrmerge crap... They miss a major point. If they want to merge /usr/bin with /bin, why not get rid of /usr/bin? Why not copy all of /usr/bin into /bin? But to boot do you really need 15G of /usr/share? Is /usr/games really required for boot? Do you need the complete linux source to boot in /usr/src? All of these irrelevant directories live in /usr The total of my /usr/bin, lib and lib64 (1.4G, 1.3G 3.2G) can easily live in the 9.7G free of my root. It's the rest of /usr that you are pulling along. If you want /usr/bin/lib/lib64 on root... why not just move them there? I split /usr and root because I don't need 20G of docs or fonts or source on my boot disk. Why would you claim that's the only viable answer you could come up with? Last I understood, this WASN'T going to be done (out of the systemd "discussion"...). So how do I boot now w/o a rescue disk? How is it that this made it past anyone else who cared as I know I wasn't the only one. Historically, "/bin" was supposed to contain statically linked binaries -- though at worst, have their libs in /lib which was also expected to reside on the root fs. /usr was where all the "larger" programs were -- ones that required lots of linkages, but the basic system was expected to be able to come up in single user without /usr being mounted. There was a reason why that choice was made and many people pushed for it -- one of those reasons -- being able to boot when /usr wasn't mounted -- also, historically, /usr, being larger, took longer to "fsck", um... so what happened? Tested update from 12.2 to Factory using "zypper dup". 12.2 was set to use local time in RTC during installation. After update to Factory YaST2 now claims that RTC is set to UTC. /etc/adjtime is also set to UTC (I did not check the value in 12.2 so cannot say whether it was changed or not). timedatectl output is funny. Hi all, Some of you might have run into this (SORRY!), but as agreed as a targer, packages that do support it, have now systemd enabled (most notably, that means they use systemd-login instead of ConsoleKit). Unfortunately, gdm failed me on that one... and only comes up with a 'oh no, something has gone wrong screen'. The log files were rather obvious, on what's going wrong though. So, if you see this, please get the polkit packages from Base:System (current version 0.108) and install those. It has as well the systemd integration enabled. Make sure to kill polkitd or restart your system, as otherwise you end up with an updated package, but an old polkitd in memory... no win :) For the ones that were hit by this, sorry for that. After generating a standard system in a VM from the DVD iso of 12.3 M1 I do get some messages in /var/log/messages and a last message telling: 2012-11-15T23:53:01.950045+01:00 linux rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="7.2.1" x-pid="1497" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] exiting on signal 15. After that nothing appears in that file and the command # systemctl start rsyslog.service Failed to issue method call: Unit rsyslog.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status rsyslog.service' for details. I have been running/updating 12.3/m0/m1 in a VBox for some time and recently experienced a problem booting the vm which was solved by chrooting in a reissuing grub2-install after updating the installed system. I am again unable to boot the vm which provides the following error msg: 3 logical volume(s) in the volume group "system" now active an no further action. I chrooted into and updated the system, zypper dup, and issued: /usr/sbin/grub2-install /dev/sda which completed successfully. Hello everyone, I'm glad to present you this new package called ninja-ide a Python IDE written using python-qt and Qt libraries, therefore is very portable it runs on WIndows, Mac and is already included in some Linux distributions official repositories. Excerpt from the website: http://ninja-ide.org NINJA-IDE (from the recursive acronym: "Ninja-IDE Is Not Just Another IDE"), is a cross-platform integrated development environment (IDE). NINJA-IDE runs on Linux/X11, Mac OS X and Windows desktop operating systems, and allows developers to create applications for several purposes using all the tools and utilities of NINJA-IDE, making the task of writing software easier and more enjoyable. The package is built using PyQt and depends on Qt >= 4.7, and pyinotify to handle filesystem events. I've been personally using the IDE at work and I'd say is very cool, and has a pep8 checker that turns to be very handy. It also supports plugins. Greg, Not sure if you already received questions about GNOME 3.6 for tumbleweed, but I did some pre-staging work which hopefully helps you. the repository https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=home:dimstar:GS36 builds against Tumbleweed and has (hopefully) all the things needed to get GNOME 3.6 integrated into Tumbleweed (It's mostly a copy of GNOME:STABLE:3.6; all those packages made their way also in Factory, which is a prerequisite for Tumbleweed). Do you have any particular integration tests you usually do? Expected fallouts: - Evolution API changes: anything building against evolution in TW is likely to break. - Issues with gstreamer 1.0 / 0.10: some apps happen to link (directly and indirectly) to gstreamer 0.10 and 1.0 at the same time (rhythmbox is an example doing so.. fixed in home:dimstar:GS36 of course). - glib did not have too intrusive changes, but it might still have a few fallouts (API strictness) - Not unlikely, other things have API changes which I do not remember about and am not fully aware of other things linking to it... Hi all, I had two hours of fun getting my machine to boot again after todays update to FACTORY. * I mount my extra data partitions by label and they are on LVM * I have an old fashioned cryptohome (/etc/crypttab) Right now: * mount by label of LVM seems broken https://bugzilla.novell.com/789020 * cryptohome does not get mounted https://bugzilla.novell.com/789019 Also, I had to uninstall plymouth from "init=/bin/bash" and then mkinitrd, since it did not ask me for the passphrase and did not allow anything else to ask for the passphrasse, but I don't have enough information on that issue to file a bugreport and don't want to reboot my box now that it finally has booted and logged me in again ;-) The workaround for the mount by label problem was to replace "LABEL=/space /space ..." with "/dev/mapper/main-space /space" in /etc/fstab, the workaround for the cryptohome problem is to switch to VT1, log in and do a "mount /home", then switch back to X and log in via gdm. For a variety of reasons, I have tried grub, grub2, lilo, and now syslinux (extlinux, actually). In fact, I am quite happy with syslinux. It feels a lot like grub, without the huge config file (grub2) or the other issues I had with lilo. What would it take to get syslinux (extlinux, actually) support into yast2 or whatever as a supported bootloader? I am willing to do some coding. Hi, I'm pretty tired after returning to my home, so all I want to write are my impressions of the BoF about the release schedule. I gave a talk, Robert had two and all three had interesting discussions and then we had a 90 minutes BoF about the same topic: the factory development process. And all in all I would like to summarize this way: our schedule is not the problem, the process needs improvement and the distribution needs more people to take responsibility. The main part of the BoF was about if we need to change 12.3's schedule to implement changes or not. We agreed to implement what we can and stick to the schedule - even if that means that 12.3 won't be our strongest release. But reliable release schedule and reliable quality are our strongest priorities - features and number of packages come after that. That said, we were about 20 people in that BoF, so we can only give recommendations to the developer community as a whole.
