[opensuse-factory] acpid requires systemd?

Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. Hi: Will be cool if rpmlint could warn when upstream packages attempt to use the -ansi gcc option because it inhibits usage of gcc builtin functions while optimizing (list here --> http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Other-Builtins.html#Other-Builtins) most recently it caught my attention that it also disables the new "optimize-strlen" pass in gcc 4.7, in particular this: "for hosted compilations where stpcpy is available in the runtime and headers provide its prototype, e.g. void foo (char *a, const char *b, const char *c, const char *d) { strcpy (a, b); strcat (a, c); strcat (a, d); } can be optimized into: void foo (char *a, const char *b, const char *c, const char *d) { strcpy (stpcpy (stpcpy (a, b), c), d); } " when -ansi is used and (defined(_GNU_SOURCE) || (_XOPEN_SOURCE >= 700 || _POSIX_C_SOURCE >= 200809L)) is false, there is no stpcpy prototype and hence no optimization. Hi, This is also related to the "Coolo needs help thread". During osc12 we had various discussions related to the topic of getting the distribution out the door and how we can get there within the release schedule that we had agreed to a while back. Part of this discussion are the two sessions I had the opportunity to lead, both are available on youtube opensusetv, if you are interested in this topic please go and watch these sessions, as well as Stephan's session, also on youtube. Unfortunately we did not have video equipment in the BoF session. The basic proposal is, and this received general agreement at osc12, that we will move toward changing the model as proposed in the session. This implies the following: - In the web UI one will no longer see inherited project maintainers on the package page, only the "true" package maintainers. (Inherited "maintainers" will be hidden in an expandable tree) - We will collect information about all packages in all devel projects that feed factory. We will generate a list of packages that have no maintainer, and a list of packages that need help, i.e. a package that has fewer than 5 maintainers. In addition we will list packages that have more than 5 maintainers and try to encourage maintainers from those packages (to get the number to 5) to take on packages that need help. - We want to clean up the devel project maintainer list to a ratio of 10/500 packages with a max of 25. ~ In many cases package maintainers in a given project do not care about all the other packages in the project, yet they are on the project maintainer list. ~ Also many people have their Hermes notifications disabled as they get too many messages about packages they do not care, hopefully with the changes more people will re-enable their Hermes notifications (more on this below) - We would like to see a notification on the package page if the package fails to build in factory - Would like to see package build status information on the factory status page about the status of the package in it's devel project. - Having the monitor page and the status page presented in the current form is confusing, we need to somehow merge the information. - It would be really nice if there were some kind of policy engine that could enforce the "no more than 5 per package" and the "no more than 25 project maintainers" policies. ~ now OBS is not just for openSUSE, thus this cannot be hard coded into the OBS code, thus this is potentially a lot of work. - We would like to have some kind of rating system on the devel projects - We will produce guidelines for package and product maintainers outlining what is expected. ~ These guidelines are not hard rules, but provide help to new people stepping in to define the role they are comfortable with. There appears to be a problem that the complete void of guidelines in this area leads to paralysis and people just do not know what to do if they want to help. We have documents how to package, these guidelines will be a hopefully short list of "what is expected". These are the rough outlines of the "plan". Obviously there is work to be done and the OBS team already has plenty to do. It is up to me to document in more detail the requirements/use case before a potential timeline can be developed. I will also start a wiki page attempting to define the various roles in the devel process and then opening that up for discussion once the basics are in place. Now to a couple of counter points. - Yes we will step on some people's toe, sorry. Meaning if you get removed as project maintainer from a devel project and you really really want to be a project maintainer you are probably not going to be happy. Please do not take it personal and get yourself added back to the project. Preferably you would find one of the project maintainers that remained, by chance and chance alone, and get that person to drop of the list. Chances are you will find someone willing to "make space for you" ~ Sorry, but this process has to be somewhat arbitrary due to the large number on the various devel projects. ~ Please be not offended, there is no vicious intent, just the intent to help the project grow and scale better. - Yes, the "rules" are changing, and if you maintain a package that is also in factory there will now be some expectations ~ In the end we all should have the same goal, create a quality distro in the time frame we promise, thus this should really not be a big deal Before I close this rather long e-mail (sorry) I have a kind of survey question. I would like to have the hermes settings of package maintainers reset "automatically" as we move through the house keeping project such that package maintainers get notification of build failures of their packages. I realize many people have these turned off today, but again, this is probably due to the number of notifications due to the project maintainer mails that most people do not care about. OK, before I write another couple of pages about this subject I'll stop here. Thanks for your attention, please no flaming, bitching and moaning. Great ideas and help are welcome. I want to change the background image that is used by Plymouth to a black background, showing the moving lights, to get rid of the awful over-sized chameleon icon, and the ugly green color. Hi, I'm pretty tired after returning to my home, so all I want to write are my impressions of the BoF about the release schedule. I gave a talk, Robert had two and all three had interesting discussions and then we had a 90 minutes BoF about the same topic: the factory development process. And all in all I would like to summarize this way: our schedule is not the problem, the process needs improvement and the distribution needs more people to take responsibility. The main part of the BoF was about if we need to change 12.3's schedule to implement changes or not. We agreed to implement what we can and stick to the schedule - even if that means that 12.3 won't be our strongest release. But reliable release schedule and reliable quality are our strongest priorities - features and number of packages come after that. That said, we were about 20 people in that BoF, so we can only give recommendations to the developer community as a whole. I will submit ghc (The Glorious Glasgow Haskell Compilation System) as a new package to Factory. GHC's main web page is: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ Package ghc is developed at OBS in devel:languages:haskell Description: GHC is a state-of-the-art, open source, compiler and interactive environment for the functional language Haskell. It is part of Haskell Platform. Maintainability: The compiler has about 3-5 releases per year. Reasons to have it in Factory: Needed for Haskell Platform FATE #314446 (https://features.opensuse.org/314446) and pandoc FATE #312777 (https://features.opensuse.org/312777) Hints for package reviewers: We need to bootstrap the compiler. Therefore we need to bring a binary compiler in with a source file. That binary compiler will only be used to bootstrap a stage 0 compiler and will not be included in the resulting binary rpm. After bootstrap is done in Factory I will submit the package again with all bootstrap code removed. Lines that I will remove are marked with comments # remove after initial bootstrap and # end bootstrap. I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? Hi, we're using %{?run_permissions:%{run_permissions}} in the post scriptlet of the samba-krb-printing package. While building for opensuse-factory we get this warning [ 1762s] WARNING: run_permissions is obsolete and will be removed january 2013 As we execute %{run_permissions} only if it is defined all looks good from our side. Therefore we consider to simply ignore the warning. But I fear we'll come to the point where the package sources will not get accepted for openSUSE Factory. Our goal is to use the same spec file also for older products like SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and 11. Hi all, the latest filesystem package received some script magic, trying to rename /var/lock to /var/lock.migrated and finally adding some symlinking to /run/lock, which is the new location for the lock folder. Unfortunately, on my machine, this fails for some reason (currently unknown to me): Installing: filesystem-12.3-3.1 ...............................................................................................[error] Installation of filesystem-12.3-3.1 failed: (with --nodeps --force) Error: Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: unpacking of archive failed on file /var/lock: cpio: rename failed - Is a directory error: filesystem-12.3-3.1.x86_64: install failed error: filesystem-12.3-2.1.x86_64: erase skipped Trying to do this move manually results in: # mv /var/lock /var/lock.migrated mv: cannot move ‘/var/lock’ to ‘/var/lock.migrated’: Device or resource busy lsof +D /var/lock yields no results. apparmor has been ruled out (disabled) Any other good ideas on what can be tested? [opensuse-factory] Forgot to install grub,after removing grub2. How to install bootloader from minimal-bash?

Hi, I just tried to install grub, and removed grub2. zypper said grub legacy already installed, and removed grub2. After reboot, grub was not 'in command' forgot, did not think about to install it. What command is needed to boot the kernel, or rather, install a bootloader? 122 install disc only has cli rescue, but is not usable at that point. 122 lacks the repair option/boot installed os at install point. Any suggestions as to how to get a complete system booted from zero, without having to install everything new?? Written from another box of course... I am stuck with 640x480 display. Cannot believe we ever were bound to that spec... x86_64 intel_7 I have the oracle 4.1.22 package installed and successfully installed the guest package from external cd into 12.3 but cannot get larger resolution, 1920x1200 display. I can install 12.2 w/o a problem and have windoz/centos/chakra/mint2 all running w/o a problem. [opensuse-factory] Can't boot 12.3 GNOME live CD

I can't boot to the Gnome live CD for 12.3. I can't even do a media check, it stops at the line "sr 2:0:0:0 Attached scsi generic sg1 type 5." Booting to Gnome, I only get as far as the green wallpaper and wait 10-15 minutes, but it goes no further. It seems to quit, looking at my CPU monitor. I'm trying to run 12.3 in VirtualBox OSE with 1536MB RAM. The image passes the checksum. Are there any known issues with this? Hi, Yast has another default path that it uses, because in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ Are all the themes that can not be selected, so which path is used, instead of the standard? That is probably also the reason why the System manager > Login screen does not work. I have inherited the package maintenance from Vincent Untz [1][2] and the development is now in X11:windowmanagers taking place. Sawfish {3] is an extensible window manager using a Lisp-based scripting language. Its policy is very minimal compared to most window managers. Its aim is simply to manage windows in the most flexible and attractive manner possible. All high-level WM functions are implemented in Lisp for future extensibility or redefinition. Since I am not it Prague any more. My POV about the "Release Schedule Discussion". Basically people mostly cares about his particular work, and not about the distribution as a whole. The work in the distribution as a whole is left to Coolo and few more people. Since what we need is more people to look at it, some problems/things to do: - Make https://build.opensuse.org/project/status?project=openSUSE%3AFactory the homepage of more people Too many clicks are required to reach the Factory status page. It's like if someone wanted to hide it. Not that I think it actually makes such a difference, but we should try to make it more visible. But the big problem is that it takes 30+ seconds to load it. Sometimes I actually don't look at it just because I don't want to wait. There is nothing that can be done about it? Caching? Make it fast and visible and more people will know about Factory status. The essential first step to get people to help. - Make people want to work on the problems Now I already loaded the Factory status page. I look at the list and I usually find two kind of entries: the ones that are so important that I am sure somebody else is already working on it (or is already fixed but lacks a rebuild), and the ones I don't care about. I mean, yast2-network has been failing to build for 11 days??? It can't actually be true, is it? And if it is for sure it's just because it's a complex problem, but somebody has been working on it for 10 days. I guess something similar is happening with libreoffice. But "qutim"? Yet another instant messenger? It's the first time I listen about it. I just can't find the motivation to look into it. For the first problem we need some easy and visible way to see if somebody else already took responsibility to fix a problem. Without this people just doesn't help because they don't think their help is needed. The Factory status page needs an extra column with the name of the person working on the problem. For the second problem we need a defined policy for dropping packages. If a package doesn't build for a long time and nobody fixes it... well, just drop it. It's clear nobody cares enough. I am sure it could be improved, but let's say: "If a package doesn't build for 30 days mark it for dropping. Announce it, with a list of all the current packages marked for dropping everywhere. Send the announcement to -factory/-packaging. Put it in news.opensuse.org. Have it in the forums so users also now. Perhaps let forum users vote for the packages they actually care. If after 60 days it still fails to build the package gets dropped, with also an announcement." - Inform maintainers when their update breaks other packages Sure, perhaps the kernel maintainer doesn't care if an out-of-tree module breaks. But some people *may* actually care if their update of a library breaks an application. Let's send an automatic email to them. If they don't care they will just ignore the email, if they care... great! I guess it's not so obvious to automatically know what package broke another one. Hello, since openSUSE 12.2 I see, that the system time is always wrong under the following conditions: - openSUSE 12.2 - BIOS clock stores localtime - systemd init - ntp is configured as server or as "update time once on boot" and uses external ntp time servers - NTPD_FORCE_SYNC_ON_STARTUP="yes" in /etc/sysconfig/ntp (default setting) - no network connection to ntp servers on boot After some debugging I found, that BIOS clock is always set to UTC (Europe/Berlin - 2 hours) on boot, when /etc/init.d/ntp start is executed (indirectly by systemd). On next boot system time initializes from the false UTC BIOS time. Of course, setting BIOS time to UTC fixes the issue, but this is not an ideal solution for dual boot PCs (especially with Windows XP). Having a stable internet connection is also an option. But what about mobile devices (e.g. notebooks with openSUSE and Windows XP)? As customary, I'd like to present a set of new packages I've been pushing forward. Vega Strike[3] is an open-ended 3D space simulator, in the genre of Elite and Privateer. Although releases are far apart, development is active and ongoing, and there is a decent user base, spanning Ubuntu, Fedora, Windows and some Mac users. The engine (vegastrike), with which at least 3 games are built, has been accepted into factory a while ago and has made it into 12.2. However, the legal review (and related cleanup) for the data bundle of its (rather massive) flagship game, "Vega Strike: Upon the Coldest Sea", has taken a lot longer than anticipated, and has just reached Factory. Optional music (SR 114869[0]), speech (SR 120493[1]) and extra texture packs (SR 120470[2]) are awaiting similar review, and though they could face similar setbacks I'm hopeful the hard part is over. I hope you are as eager to play it as I am to provide it. [opensuse-factory] repositories for 12.3/??factory

I have installed milestone0 for 12.3 in a vb and am somewhat confused in trying to determine which repos should be enabled and have been unable to remove that confusion in reading the wiki's on opensuse.org. Is there a wiki or web page describing a setup to test 12.3 or factory? [opensuse-factory] No gcc available in openSUSE 12.3

For some testing I need to have gcc in openSUSE 12.3, however trying to install gcc I have a large dependency problem. It is only possible to install after downgrading most if not all of KDE to 4.8. -- fr.gr. I have just upgraded my laptop to openSUSE 12.2. I've got several issues. - I have got this bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=716652 even though it was marked as fixed since openSUSE 12.1.
