It appears that the latest build in Tumbleweed downgraded python-kdebase4 from 4.8.3-5.1 to 4.8.2-7.1 — of course since everything else is at 4.8.3 this breaks dependencies. Looking at the build log dosn't provide a clue as to why it has downgraded, so could someone else please have a look at what is going on with that package? The source package in the repo is at 4.8.3 like it should. [opensuse-factory] About the Live CDs (PLEASE READ)

Hi, The beta has no libreoffice and no gimp on the live cd - mainly because their dependencies got blocked (ghostscript and jdk). Now I tried how much space we need to save to be at 700MB and it's roughly 80MB, that we are over. So I wonder: should we screw the medium CD and go officially for 1GB sticks as our medium? (or require DVD medium for non-usb). The alternative is saving these 80MB by picking something to block. But as you can see, libreoffice and it's subpackages (plus their dependencies) is worth ~20% of the live cd space. [opensuse-factory] Current status of Live CDs

This contribution is not discussing the relative merits of various distributions. It is only reporting on the current state of the Live CDs. At about 16:00 UTC on June 19, I did an 'osc update' of the Live CD project and used 'osc build' commands to build the resulting Gnome and KDE 64-bit Live CD images. Both images built without error, and both booted with qemu-kvm. As discussed earlier, neither image will fit on a standard 80 minute/700 MB CD. The KDE version is 738 MiB and the Gnome one is 742 MiB, thus they could be burned to a 90 minute/800 MB blank as long as the user has suitable blanks and burning program. The Gnome CD boots without problems using the standard 512 MB RAM available with qemu-kvm (no swap space). With no swap space available, the KDE version needs roughly 784 MB (712 MB is not enough). Although the KDE version will boot with 512 MB and swap space (tested with a VBox VM), the resulting paging makes it really slow. I recommend that the 12.2 Release Notes make the memory requirements clear. If someone is working on the specs for a lighter-weight LXDE CD, or some other desktop, please let me know. If not, I will try to put together a spec file that will result in a Live system that fits on a 700 MB blank with LibreOffice included. Distribution update from Tumbleweed installs 0.9.0.2-4.2, which is then immediately replaced with 0.9.1+0.9.0-1.6.1 from openSUSE-current Updates via a security patch openSUSE-2012-233. I seem to remember that there was some versioning confusion and 0.9.1 doesn't really exist and the package in Tumbleweed might actually be the current one — in which case I'd need to lock the patch, just like openSUSE-2011-25-1, openSUSE-2011-80-1 and openSUSE-2012-15-1, which would try to downgrade packages that have been updated in Tumbleweed. [opensuse-factory] OBS Maintenanced enabled for 12.2

Hi folks, As coolo has split off a openSUSE:12.2 project from Factory, I have also enabled the OBS Maintenance for 12.2 now. Coolo (I understand) will handpick updates from Factory for the 12.2 tree as he did in previous releases, but you can also submit updates via normal maintenancerequests. We did consider doing this exclusively via maintenancerequests, but this would be too much work on the maintenance team and also rebuilds would not be possible as-easy anymore. We apply the same rules to 12.2 as for the others, meaning changes entries with good description and bnc# etc. We can only accept fixes that do not affect building of other packages as the maintenance updates are self-contained. Please note that NEEDINFO maintenance(a)opensuse.org is not strictly required anymore these days, but if you have any questions, please mail us there. The merging of those updates into 12.2 until the release is not fully clarified, we will work this out in the next weeks. Likely coolo will sr them somehow. So using "osc mbranch PACKAGE" will check PACKAGE out for 11.4, 12.1 and 12.2 now and can get fixes. Hi, It's monday morning and I can't see how we can finish RC1 this week - seriously, I can't even see how we can do it this month ;( Most annoying bug nr. 1 is fixed since yesterday (hopefully), but the crash with /usr is still there and hasn't seen activity for 14 days ;( bnc#752796 The live cd I almost got back in shape by - you guessed it - removing a whole bunch of packages. Working DVDs we could not yet produce though. I spent a fair share of the weekend to get texlive back in shape for factory, but I have 120 failing packages - webyast and the go stack being biggest offenders in numbers. If someone can point me to recent and accurate survey data on Linux server usage, I'd be eternally grateful. ;-) 4. Linux on desktops / laptops is essentially irrelevant. Again, I haven't seen recent figures, but my impression is that at *most* Linux represents three percent of the market, with the rest split somewhere in the 85:15 ratio between Windows and MacOS X. Linux netbooks were not commercially viable. The general principles of strategic marketing are fairly well known and I don't want to go into a lecture here. Briefly, you want to invest in *growing* markets and capture market share of *paying customers*, not *users*. The markets that I see growing are cloud / IaaS / PaaS, "big data / data science / business intelligence / text analytics", and "social / local / mobile". That's where Red Hat / Fedora are investing, and that's where Canonical / Ubuntu is investing. And that's where I think SUSE/openSUSE needs to invest. 1. I think we need an openSUSE PaaS. Red Hat/Fedora has OpenShift, and Ubuntu is the core of VMware's Cloud Foundry. Both Fedora and Ubuntu ship with OpenStack Essex. I think 12.2 should ship with OpenStack Essex, not Diablo, but that's not going to happen. I can live with the B1 Systems repositories for now. 2. I think we need to package the major "big data" infrastructure tools. Hadoop for sure, but probably damn near everything the Apache Foundation maintains - Mahout, Cassandra, the UIMA natural language processing infrastructure, etc. There's a fair amount of yak shaving there; in particular making all the Apache magic run with OpenJDK is a bit of effort, but somebody needs to do it. OBS is the logical place to do that. NoSQL: we've got MongoDB and CouchDB and Node.js and Redis already, but Riak is in and out because of build failures, and I don't think Neo4J has ever been packaged. 3. Ubuntu is absolutely crushing the rest of the distros in social / local / mobile. They've got docking with Androids, an app store, music services, ... Fedora doesn't seem to care about this at all, and perhaps Red Hat made a conscious business decision based on hard data. We need to get some hard data and make the conscious business decisions - can SUSE/openSUSE *win business* in social / local / mobile, and how do we do it? Partner with Intel / Samsung / Tizen? In case you missed it, Nokia dropped Meego, HP flushed WebOS and RIM is on the ropes. [opensuse-factory] Java 1.7.0 'promotion' breaks other packages

Hi all, Seems these last days, Java 1.7.0 was 'promoted' to be the default Java in Factory (must have missed the 'integration work' going on and the announcement?) One of my packages (libgda) now fails due to that; the openSUSE Factory status monitor correctly 'lists' this as 'Java 1.7 breaks it'. Yes, this can happen.. I'm mostly 'surprised' of something like java having a promotion like this, while this entire discussion is going on. And in plus, I'm not even convinced that libgda is at fault. chroot'ing into a buildroot with this java installed, for example even show: laran:~> java java: error while loading shared libraries: libjli.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory => So java does not even work! How could this variant even be considered to be promoted to the 'default' java in Factory now? Where did the tests happen? How much test did happen before this change was accepted? I tried to remove all of procmail, sendmail and postfix with zypper rm. I now have GNOME 3.4.1 running in Tumbleweed, but wow, it's tough to get installed due to some odd dependancies. Because of that, I don't feel comfortable moving it to the "main" openSUSE:Tumbleweed repo at this point in time (it's in openSUSE:Tumbleweed:Testing if anyone wants to play with it.) But, I'm sure that people do want to use it, so, any thoughts on what to do? Just wait for 12.2 for users to be able to pick this up? Yes, I had to dump a few packages from GNOME:Apps in, as they would keep old libraries around, which caused a problem. That's not really all that big of a deal, although it could get "big". The biggest problem was the typelib-1_0 dependancies, that packages seem to need, yet you had to force the update by hand in order to get zypper to realize this, and then actually upgrade the package. That is something that we can't ask anyone "normal" to do, as it takes a long time and isn't automated. Although I guess I could say this is a bug in the GNOME packages that this happens, right? Has anyone had this problem with just using the GNOME:3.4 repo on 12.1? Hi Mariusz, (CC to Factory) For a long time that no one has worked on the MATE packages... I had some free time this weekend and moved all the packages to GNOME:Cinnamon:MATE where they are supposed to be. I've also updated all the packages to 1.2.x and those with version 1.3.x available wered updated to 1.3. I've finally fixed the the damned schema installation and converted the old gconf macros to mateconf. How does this works? Kinda easy.... - the RPM macros for mateconf are installed by mate-conf, so you need it as build requires (BuildRequires: pkgconfig(mateconf-2.0)); - Add %mateconf_schemas_requires to preamble; - Add %find_mateconf_schemas to %install - Add the following for the RPM transaction: + %pre -f %{name}.schemas_pre + %preun -f %{name}.schemas_preun + %posttrans -f %{name}.schemas_posttrans - Add -f %{name}.schemas_list to %files on the packages where you want the schemas This fixes the royal nightmare created with the schemas... I've dropped the crap tools we were using (python scripts) for this task... This should be way more fun now to make packages and ensure the stuff is done properly (credits goes to people who worked on the original gconf macros, I've only modified them for MATE). If you want to see this file: http://goo.gl/ZkEuR It's in full rebuild right now... But I am assuming once it's rebuilded it should work properly for anyone who installs it. If not, I'll hammer it a bit more. Many spec files need some optimizations... I'll do that while updating to 1.3. While this is OK for distribution through the repository, for inclusion on openSUSE a lot more needs to be done so we can present a few packages to Marcus team for evaluation and see if they accept our DBus services and Polkit stuff. For now, that's pretty much it, and I expect it to be usable once the rebuild finishes... No patterns so far, I will do them later as we're missing some packages... WARNING: The default looks are probably gonna scare people since I didn't integrated the normal branding and we're most likely missing themes... use the tools from 'mate-conf-editor' (mateconf-editor) to edit the stuff you need... It's the same stuff as gconf-editor :) I've built a lot of stuff (and changed the default window manager to metacity, so we can test with Compiz that Kai is working on), there's a lot of packages missing (many add doubled functionality). I'm not in for doubling functionality... How stupid is it to supply a fork of GEdit (while we have a better option with GNOME3, and it works), Evince (FFS... kids with too much time), and others... My stance towards this... is screw the forkers and use the real stuff from GNOME3... I don't care if upstream wants to provide a full GTK2 experience (what the hell are they smoking? probably the same as I do)... We'll provide MATE using all the stuff we can from GNOME3 and openSUSE... and so far it's possible.
