After the update to the new factory kernel 3.1rc the bluetooth mouse stopped working... It connects but the mouse does not respond to any action. Is this a known issue? [opensuse-factory] Pymol and Python-pmw to Factory

I'd like to include Pymol and one of its dependencies, python-pmw in Factory. They are both currently in devel:languages:python Pymol is one of the leading programs for visualization of proteins. It has an active user community developing scripts for its python api (see http://pymolwiki.org/index.php/Category:Script_Library ), and an active upstream in the form of Schrodinger, a leading molecular modeling software company. Schrodinger sells a commercial product with extra features to the open source product, but they continue to release features and fixes to the open source version as well. See http://pymol.org/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/pymol/ python-pmw hasn't had a release in 4 years, but sees occasional commits to CVS (most recent about three weeks ago). It exists for along time (already for KDE3) and was available for SUSE and later openSUSE from packman and KDE:Extra repositories maintained by me. It's development speed is not very high, but new releases are always stable and it closely follows KDE development. [opensuse-factory] Update to Raptor2 (RDF libraries)

In the next few days I am planning to introduce the Raptor2 package in Factory. This would come together with updates for the Rasqal and Redland libraries and both of them would depend on the new Raptor2 package. The Raptor2 package is a major update from the Raptor package and include many cleanups and changes (including API changes). Both packages can be co-existent on a system (except for the man-pages) I know that the Soprano package (KDE's Nepomuk) is depending on these libraries, but please let me know if there are any other packages that should be evaluated before I push these changes to Factory. Guess what is causing the sound not to work while amarok is running. The latest version of 12.1 M5 will only play one audio source at a time. The last version would play amarok or tvtime and a flash file at the same time. [opensuse-factory] New e2fsprogs update - too late for 12.1 ?

All, I just noticed how out of date e2fsprogs is in factory. We have 1.41.11. 1.41.14 came out about a year ago and apparently there have been further hundreds of commits since then. In the last couple days, the e2fsprogs maintainers (Ted Tso and Eric Sandeen) have said they are trying to get a new update of e2fsprogs released in the short term (1.42 I assume) with hopes of it going into Fedora 17. If 1.42 is released in the next few weeks, is that likely to get into 12.1? (Fedora Rawhide has been running a unofficial snapshot of 1.41.14 + what's in git since July so it has gotten testing there.) If 1.42 is considered too new, can we get 1.41.14 at least? Hello everyone, sr#81625 want's to add 'sword', a bible study tool to openSUSE:Factory. While that is totally fine, the spec file %description contains stuff like: +The SWORD Project is an effort to create an ever expanding software package for +research and study of God and His Word. While I don't care much for that particular bedtime story, others may well be offended by biased religious views (even more so if their's differing). Of course, this may equally apply to policitcal views or offensive words. I have the feeling that openSUSE should take neutral stance, be inviting and open for everyone (and we're quite good at that already). But I'm not sure if we should provide a stage for non-technical biased views. Even less so for those with a mission. I submitted the following bugreport (bnc#717326): === The current Lanana devices list http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/docs/device-list/devices.txt reserves sd* name for SCSI block devices, while USB devices should have name of the type ub*: USB block devices 0 = /dev/uba First USB block device 8 = /dev/ubb Second USB block device 16 = /dev/ubc Thrid USB block device But in openSUSE USB devices are actually assigned names in sd* range making automatic device type detection impossible or difficult. I faced this issue when making a patch for KDE3 that should detect removable media without hal and which is based on analysis of /proc/self/mounts entries. Thus the mtab backend thinks about USB drives as of hard disks. === It is actually interesting why USB devices are assigned SCSI-names, and should not they receive USB names. [opensuse-factory] wireless connection in KDE

I am on kde trunk and opensuse factory. I have configured my wireless to autoconnect and as a system connection. When I start the computer connects as a charm but if I suspend it and then unsuspend it will ask me for a password to connect. a policykit question... Any ideas? [opensuse-factory] A modest proposal: Make nomodeset the default for distributions

Although the KMS video drivers have improved a lot, there are still a lot of nVidia adapters for which nouveau fails to provide any useful graphics screens. For new users, the failure to boot to a meaningful display is frustrating. The problem used to affect only persons that had implemented the proprietary closed-source drivers, and their graphics failed when the kernel changed. They could be warned in advance because a lot of them came to the forums for help in getting the propriety driver installed. With KMS, people are having trouble with their initial look at an openSUSE version. I expect many decide that openSUSE is flawed and move on to other distros. I propose two fixes/workarounds: (1) Make the GRUB option "nomodeset" be the default for all installation media. There will be very little impact on the NET install CD or the DVD install disks. The lower graphics performance for the Live CDs will be a small penalty to pay for the benefit of getting a great many more systems to boot. If the "nomodeset" appears after the "VGA=" on the GRUB options line, it will be easy to advise people to try removing it when booting. They will quickly learn if they need it or not. (2) In the installation process for GRUB, detect the presence of an nVidia adapter and pop-up a screen advising the user that the installed system may need the nomodeset option in order to boot. I single out nVidia because nouveau seems to handle many fewer models than the KMS drivers for the others. I don't have any ATI adapters, and the one i915 system I have boots without trouble. One of my nVidia-equipped systems boots to a blank screen with nouveau, and the other corrupts the alternate terminals. I have no doubt that the KMS developers will have drivers that handle nearly all adapters in the near future. As someone having experience with reverse engineering, I'm really impressed with the progress, but kernels 3.0 and 3.1 still need some work. As we can help our users get a more satisfactory experience with quite small changes, I think we should do so. I installed Factory more than a week ago in one of my laptops (T410). I could not get nouveau or the proprietary nvidia driver to work, until I found some posts pointing to home:/jobermayr/ which made nouveau work. The proprietary driver still gives a black screen (I updated X11:Driver:Video to 280.13 even). Later Factory had more updates, including nouveau, I updated, and everything was broken again. So home:/jobermayr is still required and I have to lock them or reinstall them after a dup. (why are those fixes not integrated? will they?) On my workstation, not even with home:/jobermayr I can get a working GNOME3. Both nouveau and proprietary driver (280.13) work only in fallback mode. I tried a Fedora Alpha LiveCD today, and it graphics worked out of the box on the workstation. x11 nouveau is 8378443 kernel 3.0.0 mesa dri drivers: 7.11-0.16 20110620 So what is causing all this mess? kernel? nouveau-x11? Mesa? What is the plan with jobermayr fixes? I updated the proprietary driver .spec files to use 280.13 (just a sed op). Are those changes wanted or are those kept up with an older version for a reason? Basically, I should be able to take a GNOME or a KDE LiveCD into a Staples or a Best Buy and boot it on any laptop they have and have the screen, audio, wireless and pointing device come up functional. I know that's a tall order, but I just bought an Asus U46E-BAL5 and except for a modest glitch in the touchpad (Linux thinks it's a PS/2 mouse and it's a known upstream kernel issue) it comes up with everything functional in openSUSE 11.4, Fedora and Ubuntu. Is there a log somewhere that explains why, for example, a tumbleweed zypper dup degraded the kernel from 3.0.4 to 2.6.37.6 today? Was this intentional? Any missed dependency that required going back to the 11.4 kernel? Or was a severe security problem found in all kernels after 2.6.37? Factory team just rejected the ezcomponents-* packages which I submitted to factory because I needed them as a dependency for phpunit. I looked at them and I am about to drop them from server:php:applications too. These packages are in a bad shape- each of them seems to consist of the complete ezcomponents framework. I will set up a bare minimum of ezcomponents pear packages which is sufficient to run phpunit. I wonder whether our IPv6 settings are the right ones after reading the following article (sorry, German only): http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/IPv6-Smartphones-gefaehrden-Privatsp… which references: http://www.heise.de/netze/hotline/IPv6-anonym-1100727.html We set use_tempaddr to 0 by default (disabling privacy extensions) and set it to 1 if enabled. The article advises to use 2. Background: By default (value 0) my IPv6 address will be derived from my hardware (macaddr) and therefore be the same independend how I connect to the internet. So, it's easy to track my computer... So, my proposal is to do the following two changes: * Use 2 instead of 1 in /etc/rc.d/boot.ipconfig for enabling the privacy extensions * Set IPV6_PRIVACY=yes in /etc/sysconfig/sysctl Any concerns with this change? Hi list, is there a canonical way to provide easy setup for application databases say in mysql? I have invested some time into a suse-centric commandline installer for horde 4 and it works sufficiently well to be included with the distribution soon but it only works if the user already created a database and a users. Before I go ahead and reinvent the wheel, how would yast or KDE or whoever uses databases as backends do it? Hi, xorg-x11-server in Factory is still at 1.9.3 release ; however latest stable release is in 1.10.x branch.... As feature freeze is 2 weeks away, and as an xorg update is not trivial, does that mean that openSUSE 12.1 will keep a 11 months old xorg server in november ? I'm encountering issue with obsolete GL_PROTO extension when trying to compile Mesa from master because of that. I've just installed 12.1M5 on a plain HP Compaq office machine - after logging in (KDE), and swapping to virtual console 1, I see a slew (maybe 50) of message "FIBMAP: Invalid argument". Second, a little later I see a pile of messages from "modem-manager" about plugins being loaded. Hello, I check in the moment a EFI installation and I found that YaST2 don't let me create a bigger Partition than 156 MB (M5)? In my understanding, for Update elilo to grub2-efi, I must have a bigger Partition? I don't found any, by my search over EFI, that this partition must be 156 MB? The next question is, have any installed (tested) EFI with a existing Win 7 EFI installation? a Friend have a Intel DX58SO2 with EFI Win 7 Installation and he await eagerly the 12.1 is finish ;) The Intel Bios from the DX58SO2 have no EFI Boot menu, so I hope this is working withe grub2-efi? -- mit freundlichen Grüßen / best Regards, Günther J. [opensuse-factory] Testing: DVD vs. CD and kernel 3.0

I vaguely remember saying I would do some testing, but as I need my computers to be functional and they are too weak to run a VM this hadn't come to fruition; until now. I was checking out Mandriva, and though it had a lot of promise it sucked in critical ways... thus I had to reinstall. For some reason all I had was a CD ISO of openSUSE. Which was fine since I wanted to get some fresh notes between the discrepancies of the DVD and CD installs. In the course of the first reinstall I decided to try Kernel 3.0 since the reviews were positive enough for me to feel safe To keep it simple here is a list, plus I'm a little drunk. KPackageKit/Updater Does not work in DVD install (at all), works perfectly in CD install(everything). NetworkManager DVD install ye olde KNetworkManager, CD installs Plasmoid. I remember from before there being discrepancies in the behavior of samba betweenst the two. As I have no systems on the network that are able to communicate in that fashion anymore, I cannot pinpoint these. I did however get some help from a fellow on IRC for getting samba to work between openSUSE and my roomies Mac. He was very helpful, I would recommend somebody trying to get some feedback from him on samba. He is "kukks" on IRC. **** **** **** My experience with Kernel 3.0 was fairly positive. Power consumption was down, heat was down, noise was down. Speed slightly up. Weird 30 second countdown in the boot, "connecting." Only managed to load RPM NVidia driver once. I found no application anomalies with using that kernel. I hear there are some vicious problems with the Sandy Bridge architectures, and would recommend adding some sort of release notes to the SUSE welcomer thingy that pops up after a fresh install. I attempted Tumbleweed and got alot of strange errors in the boot process, but since I was having trouble getting to a graphical interface to begin with (thanks to removing the Nouveau driver) I could not be sure if they were critical. Some miscellaneous notes: It seems the brcm80211 driver has come a long way, since it isn't causing any kernel panics anymore. However, it behaved typically off the LiveCD... but after installed behaves superior to the WL driver. This could be due to upgraded kernel (I don't think so) or because its pulling configuration from the unformatted /home partition. I must make note, that whatever the reason it works correctly it is faster by a wide margin to connect to the WIFI. Nouveau is much much better. I imagine that in a years time I may no longer bother to install the proprietary driver. I have discovered some boot arguments that make my netbook run cooler, and the reports all over the web are similar. acpi_osi=Windows or Linux have a cooling effect... they seem to both be equal. There was another one that I was made aware of that I observed no definite effect from; I'll look it up later. I would have suggested that maybe we should include those arguments in future installs, but 3.0 handles power better for the most part (unless you have sandy-bridge) so it may not be relevant anymore. I think this is everything ATM. I will append this if I remember other things. Om namah Shivaaya! Hi, Since I switched from sysvinit to systemd on my Factory system, I notice that it fails to power down after a shutdown, while it did that OK before. Now, it just sits there and tells me the system has been halted but leaves it running. Is that a configuration problem or a systemd-related bug? I found none on file in Bugzilla as a dependency of the "systemd by default" bug, so I wanted to ask here if it's just a one-off. (I found a bug for my second problem, which is apache not starting properly, so I won't complain about that here.) I have now enabled systemd more or less successfully in an M5 running in VBox. Some things and probs that I have ran into: This installation runs in Oracle VBox and I'm used to run also their guest additions. So normally always after a kernel installation I run a script of theirs, 'VBoxLinuxAdditions.run' which has always worked. It did now, but not when booted with (F5) systemd. I booted the default way then and this script did its job normally. Taking Notes from Mandriva I recently caught wind that a new version of Mandriva was released. Having checked out the last version on the advice of a good friend, and having been underwhelmed by it I took a look again to see if I could see the magic he spoke of to me. Overall this was indeed a much better release, and were it not for a few show-stopping bugs it may very well have remained on my beloved netbook. One interesting thing of note is that Mandriva has discontinued their multiple versions. They have even abandoned the Gnome environment in favor of KDE. However, their approach was quite unique. Clearly like I had, they too took away some interesting ideas away from Gnome3; and like me were not willing to suffer the bugs. There were a couple interface elements of note. They replaced Kickoff with an interesting full screen ordeal with a document time-line view called SimpleWelcome. Though many don't like the shifting paradigm of including smart phone and tablet interfaces on a desktop, I found its layout mostly comfortable on my tiny netbook. It is very reminiscent of Gnome3. This was part of their new default Plasma panel called RocketBar. The RocketBar is not terribly different from the upstream default, with the exception of SimpleWelcome. I personally did like that their Task Manager was designed so as to only show the application icon, and not a description. As I am fond of docks, I liked this. This is something that should be integrated into the Task Manager as a option. When my friend first told me of Mandriva, he told me that it was all about the eye-candy and polish. This latest release was certainly a good example of that. With a gorgeous new GTK based widget theme, and a simple but elegant set of icons and window decoration Mandriva managed to distinguish itself. But even before that, it is distinguished in its beautiful boot splash, KDM theme, and finally the login splash. Here we can take some pointers seeing as the presentation is encouraging to the new user. They see polish and anticipate a professional distribution. It is of course not a major technological point... but then success rarely comes to the best, but rather to the clever. Now for a brief review of what was under the hood. Mandriva has switched to using systemD, which though not a very obviously faster boot from HD is brilliant when having to boot from Live media. Frankly the prior release of Mandriva was the very very slowest Live boot ever from USB... now it is second in live boot speed only to Fedora. Once again, this may not be critical but it helps. Especially since openSUSE is slow enough when booting from live media as it is, making people think the installer or live boot has frozen. Mandriva also uses the Plymouth splash, which seeing as it resembles the last splash nearly identically I assume it used last time. Since I am unfamiliar with Plymouth vs. Splashy I can only say one should go take a look. There were two show stopping bugs for me, one which we share in some degree. That being the issue with overheating. In Mandriva the overheating was extreme enough to shut my netbook down. From what I understand this is caused by a poor ACPI implementation. One thing that has helped is to add a line pertaining to ACPI into the grub boot options string. We may want to add one of these parameters by default. I apologize for the verbosity of my letter, but considering the number of points I wished to bring up felt it necessary. [opensuse-factory] systemd or not systemd - todays bug?

Hello, I have two factory boot: one with systemd on the kernel command line, and the very same one, but without the option. after a today zypper dup (only complaining about some libreoffice library), the one with systemd option do not find the harddrive so no log), but the version without systemd boots perfectly That said, my /var/log/messages is full of systemd calls! [opensuse-factory] (most likely) kiwi broke x86_64 factory

Hi, If you zypper dup your factory installation, don't be suprised if zypper suggests to reinstall your system as 32bit - the current FTP tree has no x86_64 packages that zypper would see. Most likely cause of this is a new kiwi checked in yesterday, so hopefully it's easy enough to fix.
