[opensuse-factory] bad shutdown & kernel stack/trace on boot

Did a full factory upgrade today including 2.6.26-14-pae on i845G with single PATA HD and / on /dev/dm-19. New kernel installation badly mangled menu.lst, which I fixed manually. Several times shutdown -h message failed (shutdown -r message succeeds) leaving dirty partitions, and startups litter screen with kernel stack/trace flotsam. Now shutdown works. :-p KDM no longer succeeds, but startx does. HPFS partitions won't mount any more. Prior kernel 2.6.26-2-pae won't boot any more (initrd created 24 July): boot/00-dm_linear.sh: line 1: /sbin/activate_dm_linear: no such file or directory (it does exist, dated 13 Aug, as does activate_dm_linear, dated 12 July); FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.26-2-pae/modules.dep: no such file or directory (which does exist). -- "Love is not easily angered. Tesseract is a low-level optical character recognition software without any layout analysis. OCRopus is a general OCR framework that uses tesseract as one of its plugins. It can do layout analysis, language modelling etc. Both projects lack GUI. Concerning tesseract, there are no major problems with packaging since the code seems to be quite stable. On the other hand, OCRopus - available as alpha release - is under heavy development. Puzel suggested to wait for beta release (should be out this month) for which the developers promise stabilisation of build system and improvements in documentation. (2) New version of Virtual Box mkudlvasr started to work on build of the new version of VirtualBox. Altougth the local build runs, the build in autobuild fails. The initial packaging of the new version was done by community member in a BuildService. (3) How to adopt a packages from Packman mvyskocil works on improve of the build of the package openproj, withouth usage of the included binary jars. Some of the build dependencies are a part of Packman project. These packages don't have any license/or patent problem. So we've discussed about the best approach of addopting of these packages - mvyskocil will send an information about adopting to the Packman's maintaner. [opensuse-factory] openSUSE to add SELinux Basic Enablement in 11.1

I just published the following on news.opensuse.org: We have exciting news for security enthusiasts, experts, and paranoid people! Beginning with openSUSE 11.1, SUSE users will have an additional option regarding security frameworks. In addition to AppArmor, we will be adding SELinux capabilities in openSUSE 11.1, which will allow users to enable SELinux in openSUSE if they wish. While our customer experience shows that AppArmor is the best solution for the vast majority of users, applications, and use cases, we want to give all of our users the ability to choose the security framework that’s appropriate for their respective environments and needs. We continue to enable AppArmor as our default Host Intrusion Prevention System, and we are supporting it as the default in openSUSE 11.1 and in SUSE Linux Enterprise 11. However we are adding functionality to allow openSUSE 11.1 systems to use SELinux instead. In the SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 platform, SELinux will also be shipped as a technology preview. This is particularly important for organizations that have already standardized on SELinux, but could not even test-drive SUSE Linux Enterprise before without major work and changes. What does SELinux basic enablement mean? * We will ship the kernel with SELinux support. * We will apply SELinux patches to all “common” userland packages. * The libraries required for SELinux (libselinux, libsepol, libsemanage, etc.) will be added to openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise. * However, we are not offering enterprise class support for SELinux at this time; thus we will run QA with SELinux disabled – to make sure that SELinux patches don’t break the default delivery and the majority of packages. Although we will not be running QA with SELinux enabled, we encourage our testers to run tests with SELinux enabled and report issues and enhancement requests back to us. * We will not be shipping SELinux specific tools as part of the default distribution delivery. However, the packages (such as checkpolicy, policycoreutils, selinux-doc) will be available through the openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise repositories. * We will not be shipping any SELinux policies in the distribution. (Reference and maybe minimal policies will be available from the repositories.) By enabling SELinux in our upcoming codebase, we add missing pieces of code that exist in the community already, and we allow those who wish to use SELinux to do so conveniently without having to replace a big chunk of the distribution. Hi everyone, just a quick status update on the openSUSE distribution. We are getting ready for Alpha2, to be released later this week. Currently, we are testing Build0021, which almost looks like Alpha2 after some initial testing. Besides the high number of failing packages (~140-145), the most noteable issue will be broken images on the x86_64 media. We are looking into a workaround. Also, live media is still to be created -- looking into a kiwi issue on this side. Stay tuned for the Alpha2 release, coming up on Tuesday. Best, Christoph -- Christoph Thiel, Tech. Not openSUSE the distro, but openSUSE the packaging, framework, concept - whatever it is that sets openSUSE apart. After all, the software distributed is the same. I understand that areas such as translation are easy to open to community support, but your comments were made in the context of the partitioner and ext4, i.e. YaST, a very key element to openSUSE. Personally (and partially speaking on behalf of my company too), I'd like to contribute in the areas of JFS and LILO support. Both have been or are being deprecated support-wise, which I am or have been quite vocal about. So, as we are talking about the YaST/partitioner, the key question is: who decides what goes into it? Is this true open source, or is it a Novell product management decision? Who is the project lead on YaST? How does one submit patches? Who decides what is accepted and what is rejected? For instance - why might ext4 get accepted/supported whilst JFS got kicked out earlier? I dare say their level of support/testing is about the same ATM. [opensuse-factory] "contrib" repository: Further progress

We need to progress this project further. Next stage, I believe is to decide who are the maintainers, that have the final say on what gets in. Maintainers will be grant write access to "contrib" repo, that currently was added to OBS. Currently only Coolo has write commit access, and I believe he will share it with future maintainers. As Yaloki puts it - we need uneven number of leaders, so problematic cases could be solved by voting. Maintainers: Who volunteer ? -I am. (Alexey) -Pascal Bleser (yaloki) ? -Martin Schlander ? -Michal Marek ? -Anyone from Novell ? -Anyone ? Next stage would be asking coolo to give write commit access. In 11.0 there is basic support ( kernelmodule and utilities) for ext4 but no support for installation on ext4. Will there be support for installation on ext4 in 11.1 ? Hi, (cross-posting to OBS & Factory) We would like to create a top-level project for third-party packages for openSUSE, named: "Contrib". Our goals is to setup some kind of universal repository for third-party packages. This repository should be viewed as a community-driven extension of Factory, with all standards and limitations applied. Current model of third-party packages for openSUSE is broken in many user's opinion. There are lots of packages across hundreds of Build Service projects, which is hard to download & navigate. Packages are often duplicates, and aren't tested. Current model is good for experimentation and development but is bad idea for deployment. We want to make a new model, which suites deployment & distribution. ...
